  • Wideband speech communications with 7㎑ bandwidth can provide high-quality speech services that are almost impossible with current narrow-band speech communications with 3.4 ㎑ bandwidth, and AMR wideband codec was recently developed for these services. The performance of AMR wideband codec is excellent due to its wideband information and partially to ACELP structure, but it requires high computational complexity especially in codebook search. In this paper, to solve this problem, an efficient codebook search method for AMR wideband codec is proposed. The proposed method first determines the coarse initial codevector, then improves the performance of codevector by replacing a poor pulse in codevector with better one iteratively. Simulations show that AMR wideband codec with proposed codebook search method has higher performance with much less computational cost than conventional AMR wideband codec.

  • This letter proposes a new embedded speech coding structure based on the Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) standard codec. The proposed coding scheme consists of three different bitrates where the two lower bitrates are embedded into the highest one. The embedded bitstream was achieved by modifying the algebraic codebook search procedure adopted for the AMR-WB codec. The proposed method provides the advantage of scalability due to the embedded bitstream, while it inevitably requires some additional computational complexity for obtaining two different code vectors of the higher bitrate modes. Compared to the AMR-WB codec, the embedded coder shows improved speech qualities for two higher bitrate modes with a slightly increased bitrate caused by the decreased coding efficiency of the algebraic codebook.

  • AMR-WB (Adaptive Multi Rate Wideband) speech codec, the most recent voice codec standardized by 3GPP, has the wider audio bandwidth of 50∼7000 Hz and operates on nine speech coding bit rates between 6.60 and 23.85 kbit/s. This Paper presents the real-time implementation of AMR-WB speech codec by using a 16 bit fixed-point TeakLite DSP. The implemented AMR-WB codec requires the complexity of 52.2 MIPS at 23.85 kbit/s mode and also needs the program memory of 17.9 kwords, data RAM of 11.8 kwords, and data ROM of 10.1kwords. It was verified through passing the all test vectors provided by 3GPP with maintaining bit exactness. Stable operations on the real-time testing board were also proved without any distortions and delays for the audio in/out.

  • One of the recent noticeable evolutions in mobile communication systems is that wideband-codec is deployed rapidly in VoLTE (Voice over Long Term Evolution) service or HD voice. This paper is concerned with next generation HD voice or VoLTE service that is coined to describe high quality communication with super-wideband voice codec. 3GPP EVS (Enhanced Voice Service) Codec is being standardized to develop the super-wideband voice codec. This paper deals with the codec design constraints, performance requirements, the status of standardization, and finally perspective on VoLTE service in future.

  • This Paper proposes the vector quantizer-pyramid vector quantizer(VQ-PVQ) structure. Also both predictive structure and safety-net concept are combined into the VQ-PVQ to quantize the IPC parameter of wideband speech codec. The Performance is compared to the LPC vector quantizer used in the AMR-WB(ITU-T G.722.2). demonstrating reduction in both spectral distortion and encoding memory.

  • This paper proposes new 16 kbps wideband speech codec with bandwidth of 7 kHz. The proposed codec decomposes the input speech signal into low-band and high-band signals using QMF (Quadrature Mirror Filter), then AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) speech codec processes the low-band signal and new transform-domain codec based on G.722.1 wideband cosec compresses the high-band signal. The proposed codec allocates different number of bits to each band in an adaptive way according to the property of input signal, which provides better performance than the codec with the fixed bit allocation scheme. In addition, the proposed cosec processes high-band signal using wavelet transform for better performance. The performance of proposed codec is measured in a subjective method. and the simulations with various speech data show that the proposed coders has better performance than G.722 48 kbps SB-ADPCM.

  • This paper deals with analysis and real-time Implementation of a wide band adaptive multirate speech codec (AMR-WB) using a fixed-point DSP of TI's TMS320C6201. In the AMR-WB codec, input speech is divided into two frequency bands, lower and upper bands, and processed independently. The lower band signal is encoded based on the ACELP algorithm and the upper band signal is processed using the random excitation with a linear prediction synthesis filter. The implemented AMR-WB system used 218 kbytes of program memory and 92 kbytes of data memory. And its proper operation was confirmed by comparing a decoded speech signal sample-by-sample with that of PC-based simulation. Maximum required time of 5 75 ms for processing a frame of 20 ms of speech validates real-time operation of the Implemented system.

  • Bandwidth extension is a technique to improve speech quality and intelligibility, extending from 300-3400 Hz narrowband speech to 50-7000 Hz wideband speech. This paper designs an artificial bandwidth extension (ABE) module embedded in the AMR (adaptive multi-rate) decoder, reducing LPC/LSP analysis and algorithm delay of the ABE module. We also introduce a fast search codebook mapping method for ABE, and design a low power BWE technique based on the AMR decoder. The proposed ABE method reduces the computational complexity and the algorithm delay, respectively, by 28 % and 20 msec, compared to the traditional DTE (decode then extend) method. We also introduce a weighted classified codebook mapping method for constructing the spectral envelope of the wideband speech signal.

  • This paper suggests the packet loss recovery method to communicate in real time in the Internet. To reduce the effects of packet loss, Forward Error Correction (FEC) that adds redundant information to voice packets can be used. Adaptive Multi Rate Wideband(AMR-WB) codec which is recently selected by the Third Generation Partnership Project(3GPP) for GSM and the third generation mobile communication WCDMA system and has also been standardized in ITU-T for providing wideband speech services is used. The major cause for speech qualitly degradation in IP-networks is packet loss. So, We recovered single lossy packet by using FEC method and concealed continued errors. The proposed scheme if evaluated in the Gilbert Internet channel model. The high quality of audio maintained up to 30% packet loss.

  • An adaptive multi-rate (AMR) speech coder was adopted as a standard of W-CDMA by 3GPP and ETSI. The AMR coder is based on the CELP algorithm operating at rates ranging from 12.2 kbps down to 4.75 kbps, and it is a source controlled codec according to the channel error conditions and the traffic loading. In this paper, we implement the DSP S/W of the AMR coder using OakDSPCore. The implementation is based on the CSD17C00A chip developed by C&S Technology, and it is tested using test vectors, for the AMR speech codec, provided by ETSI for the bit exact implementation. The DSP B/W requires 20.6 MIPS for the encoder and 2.7 MIPS for the decoder. Memories required by the Am coder were 21.97 kwords, 6.64 kwords and 15.1 kwords for code, data sections and data ROM, respectively. Also, actual sound input/output test using microphone and speaker demonstrates its proper real-time operation without distortions or delays.
