  • The study of the Rana plancyi, was done during the calling period at a pond in Osong, Chungbuk, Korea from May to the middle of August of 1996 and 1997. Five basic types of call-A, B, C, D, E, - were identified in Rana plancyi according to the structure of call types. The structure of A type call has only one pulse, B type call has two pulses and C, D type call has one separated pulse which is called introductory call and pulse group as follow it. On the other hand, E type call has 3-6 separate pulses. The interval between introductory call and pulse group is $0.73{\pm}0.29$ s(n=159) in C type call and $0.60{\pm}0.21$ s (n=48) in D type call. The number of pulses in the pulse group is $30.08{\pm}8.69$ in C type call and $15.78{\pm}2.40$ in D type call. An increase in water temperature induces a decrease in C and D type call duration (C type call r= -0.4153, p<0.001, D type call r=-0.7064, p<0.001). In case of C and D type call, the interval between introductory call and pulse group influenced more call duration than pulse group duration. We regarded A, B type call as a territorial call and C, D type call as a mating call and we recognized that E type call has the function of threat or alarm.

  • For the study on the sex ratio in natural populations of the different localities, the amphibian species were collected as the materials at the seven localities in Korea, and were obtained the following results. The sex ratios of each amphibian species suggest that each has it's own specific sex rations the following list. Rana nigromaculata H. : 109-39, Rana rugosa SCH. : 67.44, Rana temporaria coreana O. : 158.45, Hyla arborea japonica G. : 137.70. In Rana nigromaculata H. the average sex ratio was 109.39 as the above list, and its was reached statistically significant level according to the different localiies. The sex ratio was generally higher in the eastern area than that in the western area in this country. The sex ratio of the adult frogs of Rana nigromaculata H. was 135.18 , and it has a statistically significant level by each locality but the sex ratio of the younger frogs of the same species was 100.97 which was a little lower than that in the adult, and it was not laid at a significant level according to the localities. There is no doubt that the difference of sex ratios according to the localities was mainly due to the different ratios of the adult frogs which were effected on the constitution of sex by environmental factors in each locality.

  • Hyla japonica males were observed to produce two distinctively different types of mating calls: advertisement call to attract conspecific females and encounter call to keep off potential competitor males. Whereas advertisement calls were organized in bouts of calls or notes, encounter calls were usually produced as separate calls. Encounter calls were much longer and had more pulses per call than advertisement calls. However dominant frequencies or pitches of the two calls did not differ significantly. Hyla Japonica males exhibited considerable plasticity in their calling behavior. They altered both qualitative and quantitative properties of their calls in response to other calling males. Sometimes, they even switched from producing advertisement calls to encounter calls. Advertisement calls produced by chorusing males were shorter in duration and thus move calls per bout than those produced by lone males. Males also produced much lower-pitched calls when calling together with other males. Considering that low pitch calls are often Highly correlated with body size, it is possible that H. japonica males may try to generate deceptive calls to indicate the size greater than the actual.

  • Physicochemical factors and the phytoplankton communities in the downstream area of Namhan-River were investigated from June 2012 to November 2013. We also assessed water quality using biological water quality indices. Total nitrogen was 2.4 mg/L, total phosphorus was 0.04 mg/L, and biological oxygen demand was 1.1 mg/L. This resulted in a level 2 (Ib, good) water quality rating. A total of 259 phytoplankton taxa were classified, consisting of 26 families, two subfamilies, 64 genera, 222 species, 32 varieties, and five formas. Bacillariophyceae dominated during a1l seasons and at all sites. The dominant species were Aulacoseira granulata, Cyclotella meneghiniana, C. stelligera, Melosira varians, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata, Nitzschia palea, N. amphibia, Cymbella minuta, and Achnanthes convergens. The diatom assemblage index for organic pollution values was level A-D, and TDI was level B-D. P-IBI at most sites was at the M (moderate) level, but TSI was at the E (eutrophic) level. Most indices dropped from upstream to downstream.

  • Cannibalism plays important roles at the levels of both individual and population. To enhance overall rate of successful survival and reproduction, salamander larvae may have evolved to consume both conspecifics and heterospecifics. Consuming conspecifics could result in decreased inclusive fitness possibly by killing relatives. In several salamander species, discrimination of salamander larval siblings from non-siblings and heterospecifics to avoid such a risk has been reported. To determine whether the Korean salamander larvae consume non-siblings more often than siblings and to analyze prey preferences of the salamander larvae in several different experimental conditions, a series of foraging experiments was conducted in the laboratory. We found that 1) large cannibal larvae preyed on small sibling more often than small non-sibling in a mixed group of sibling and non-sibling, 2) cannibal larvae prefered to consume live, weak, and small larvae to dead, healthy, and large larvae, and 3) cannibal larvae consumed heterospecific tadpoles more often than conspecific nonsibling larvae in a mixed group. In addition, the larval density was positively correlated with the occurrence of spacing behavior, one of the agonistic predator behaviors among salamander larvae.

  • Genetic relationships among six species of the genus Rana from Korea were investigated by complete nucleotide sequence analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1143 bp). Based on Kimura-2-parameter distance, the interspecific sequence differences of cytochrome b gene within the genus Rana were ranged from 7.83% to 25.00%. The genetic distances were 7.83% between R. nigromaculata and R. plancyi, 8.47% between two types of R. rugosa (type A and B), 10.42% between the brown frogs (R. amurensis and R. dybowskii), 16.11% between R. dybowskii types 1 and 2 and 12.36% between pond frogs (R. nigromaculata and R. plancyi) and R. catesbeiana. In the neighbor-joining and parsimony trees, R. catesbeiana was more closely related to pond frogs than brown frogs. R. dybowskii types 1 and 2 were considered to be at a distinct and specific level of differentiation (16.11%), while two types of R. rugosa were suspected to be at a subspecific level (8.47%).

  • In Korea ,little attention was paid to chiggers until 1950 so only to reports on four species of chiggers were pulished before Korean War. Since 1950 (beginning of Korean War), a marked progress in the study of chiggers has been made in connection with investigations of Epidemic hemorrhagic fever occurring among the United Nations troops which was suspected as a chigger-borne infectious disease and the first report of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea called natives attention to chiggers as the vector mites of this newly known disease in Korea. This paper is mostly based on specimens of author's collections from 3269 Rodentia Insectivora, 9 Chiroptera, 24 Aves , 35 Amphibia and 3 Reptilia during the time from December 1955 to December 1956 but four species were introduced here from works of others . There are reported here five species of chiggers previously known only out of Korea and a new species also. This new species was collected by author but Lipovsky informed his colleague had collected the same one in Korea and they would publish it as new one in near future. This is the reason of describing the new species without specific name . Of course, this paper is incomplete in view of the geographic distribution, seosonal change and host relation etc, but will serve as a brief summary of the chiggers fauna of Korea up to the present. This species described here are as follows : Gahrliepia brennani var. ventralis Neoschongastia posekanyi Euschongastia kigtajimai Euschongastia miyagawai Euschongastia koreaensis Trombicula nagayoi Trombicula japonica Trombicula pomeranzevi Trombicula mitamurai Trombicula tamiyai Trombicula palpalis Trombicula orientalis Trombicula pallida Trombicula scutellaris Trobmicula miotis Trombicula hiranumai Trombicula sp. Trombicula hiranumai Trombicula sp. Trombicula subintermedius Shunsennia tarsalis . Euschongastia ikaoensis . Trombicula koomori Trombicul subakanushi
