  • In this paper, we propose a fast adaptive power allocation method for an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system that employs an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme. The proposed scheme aims to reduce the calculation complexity of greedy adaptive power allocation (APA), which is known as the optimal algorithm for maximizing the utility argument of power. Unlike greedy APA, which starts power allocation from "0", the proposed algorithm initially allocates a certain level of power determined by the water-filling scheme. We theoretically demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has almost the same capability of maximizing the utility argument as the greedy APA while reducing the number of operations by 2M, where M is the number of AMC levels.

  • Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the most recent video coding standard, which had been developed by Joint Video Expert Team (JVET). It can improve significant coding performance compared to the previous standard, namely High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Although VVC can achieve the powerful coding performance, it requires the tremendous computational complexity of VVC encoder. Especially, affine motion compensation (AMC) was adopted the block-based 4-parameter or 6-parameter affine prediction to overcome the limit of translational motion model while VVC require the cost of higher encoding complexity. In this paper, we proposed the early termination of AMC that determines whether the affine motion estimation for AMC is performed or not. Experimental results showed that the proposed method reduced the encoding complexity of affine motion estimation (AME) up to 16% compared to the VVC Test Model 17 (VTM17).

  • The cooperative transmission between sectors in next generation communications standards, e.g., 3GPP LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802.16m, has become an important research issue. Hence methods to decide the optimal antenna tilting angle in cooperative transmission between sectors are needed. This paper proposes methods to decide the optimal antenna tilting angle in cases of non-cooperative and cooperative transmissions between sectors. The proposed methods use an objective function that maximizes the cell average log rate or the cell average rate for users distributed uniformly within the radius of the sector. Also, the objective function which maximizes the cell average rate determined by adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) used in actual cellular systems is considered. When the cell average rate becomes the objective function, the system rate efficiency increases significantly for both cooperative and non-cooperative transmission. When the cell average log rate and the AMC rate become the objective functions, an optimal antenna tilting decision method which effectively increases the efficiency of cell boundary users is discussed.

  • Squamous cell carcinoma is the primary tumor type in head and neck cancers, the fifth most common malignant neoplasm world-wide. Survivin, a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis family, is highly expressed in head and neck carcinoma patients and correlated with more aggressive forms. In this study, we investigated whether YM155, a specific survivin inhibitor, could induce apoptosis in head and neck AMC-HN4 cells. YM155 was found to markedly induce apoptosis and cleavage of PARP, a marker of apoptosis. Furthermore, YM155 promoted apoptosis in other cancer cells, such as glioma (U251MG) and renal carcinoma (Caki) cells. In contrast, YM155 had no effect on apoptosis in normal mesangial cells. YM155 significantly induced caspase activation, and pan caspase inhibitor z-VAD-fmk markedly blocked apoptosis, PARP cleavage, and caspase-3 cleavage. Therefore, YM155 was seen to instigate caspase-dependent apoptosis in head and neck AMC-HN4 cells, inducing downregulation of survivin as well as other apoptotic proteins such as c-FLIP and Mcl-1. In addition, the induction of apoptosis and PARP cleavage by YM155 treatment was effectively inhibited in survivin-, c-FLIP- and Mcl-1-over-expressing head and neck AMC-HN4 cells. In conclusion, YM155 is a potent candidate for inducing cell death in head and neck AMC-HN4 cells.

  • Aluminum matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles(AMC) are one of the candidate materials for the weight reduction of rolling stock brake discs. It is known that weight reduction of about 40% is possible when they replace conventional cast iron brake discs. But casting is not easy because of bad wettability of SiC with Al alloy. We developed two AMC brake discs with SiC volume fraction of 20% by a new casting method. It was found the developed method produced brake discs of good quality.

  • Recently, the natural disaster has occurred as a heavy snow fall, drought and flood by abnormal weather. The damage of human and property by flood is most serious problem among those natural disaster. In order to prepare structural or non-structural measure, to estimate exact flood discharge is important element. This study analyze frequency of hour-unit rainfall data and estimate probability flood discharge by HEC-HMS as changing method of runoff analysis. Also, this study analyze the peak flood discharge sensibility according to Curve Number(CN) with the return period. As a result of estimation of probability flood discharge with the variety CN, to select Antecedent Moisture To select suitable condition(AMC) is important parameter because flood discharge is estimated 40% gap according to AMC.

  • This paper proposes a cross-layer design combining adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with truncated hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for wireless multicast transmission, in order to increase the spectral efficiency while meeting the target quality-of-service (QoS). In the design, we provide the selection criterion of AMC so as to satisfy the target packet error rate (PER) of all users when the multicast data is received through the common channel and the number of retransmission is limited by the delay constraint of the service. The analytically derived results show that the cross-layer design using HARQ provides a better spectral efficiency than the AMC without HARQ by allowing retransmission and code combining. It is also observed that the design for multicast outperforms that for unicast in the mid to high signal-to-noise ratio region.

  • Enteropeptidase is a serine protease secreted by the pancreas and converts inactive trypsinogen to active trypsin. Enteropeptidase cleaves the C-terminal end of the substrate recognition sequence Asp-Asp-Asp-Asp-Lys ($D_4K$). The assay for enteropeptidase has utilized $GD_4K$-conjugated 2-naphthylamine ($GD_4K$-NA) as a fluorogenic probe over the last 30 years. However, no other $D_4K$-conjugated fluorogenic substrates of enteropeptidase have been reported. Furthermore, naphthalene is known as carcinogenic to humans. In this study, we used shift in the emission spectrum of $GD_4K$-conjugated 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin ($GD_4K$-AMC) as a fluorogenic method to measure enteropeptidase activity. The kinetic analysis revealed that enteropeptidase has a $K_M$ of 0.025 mM and a $k_{cat}$ of 65 $sec^{-1}$ for $GD_4K$-AMC, whereas it has a $K_M$ of 0.5 to 0.6 mM and a $k_{cat}$ of 25 $sec^{-1}$ for $GD_4K$-NA. The optimum pH of $GD_4K$-AMC hydrolysis was pH 8.0. Our data indicate that $GD_4K$-AMC is more suitable as a substrate for enteropeptidase than $GD_4K$-NA.

  • We implemented a 10 Gb/s 4-channel vertical cavity surface emission lasers (VCSEL) driver array in a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS process technology. To enhance high current resolution, power dissipation, and chip space area, digital APC/AMC with time division sensing technology is primarily adopted. The measured -3 dB frequency bandwidth is 9.2 GHz; the small signal gain is 10.5 dB; the current resolution is 0.01 mA/step, suitable for the wavelength operation up to 10 Gb/s over a wide temperature range. The proposed APC and AMC demonstrate 5 to 20 mA of bias current control and 5 to 20 mA of modulation current control. The whole chip consumes 371 mW of low power under the maximum modulation and bias currents. The active chip size is $3.71{\times}1.3mm^2$.
