Characteristics of AM and PM Signals in Multi-Carrier Polar Transmitter

  • Polar transmitter can support multi-band and multi-mode operation. The efficiency of frequency usage can be increased if polar transmitters can transmit multi-carrier signals. In this paper the configuration of polar transmitters is investigated to generate multi-carrier signals. Spectrum and CCDF Simulation results of two-carrier signals generated by the polar transmitter can be used to design of PM and AM path in a polar transmitter.

  • In this paepr, the distortion effects of impairments in CDMA transmitter system were analyzed. We considered not only linear distortion effects, for example, I/Q imbalance, quadrature offset and carrier leakage, but also nonlinear distortion effects such as AM-AM and AM-PM noise in power amplifier. To investigate how the impariments impact on the performance of CDMA transmitter, all effects represented as a function of CDMA modulation quality which is an important measure of the transmitted signal. These results show the limitation value of each impairment which is required to satisfy the IS-95 standard.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated the VHF wireless transmitter for air traffic control. Fundamental performance of the investigated wireless transmitter is designed and fabricated to satisfy existing commercial wireless transmitter specification for air traffic control. 25 W and 50 W of output power can be generated by changing the power amplification part only. It is based on transmitting voice communication using AM modulation. Investigated wireless transmitter for air traffic control consists of four module parts: power supply, control, low power transmission and power amplification. We designed 1W transmitter to operate without power amplification part. It can be used properly in a basic component of CNS/ATM.

  • ILS(Instrument Landing System) is the international standard system for approach and landing guidance. ILS was adopted by ICAO(International Civil Aviation Organization) in 1947 and is currently being used in commercial systems. To design the digital transmitter and receiver modules that can be mounted in the integrated ILS, we propose the digital design methods of digital double AM modulator and demodulator using FPGA chip, DDS(Direct Digital Synthesizer) for generation of sampling clock, demodulator of DDC(Digital Down Converter) structure, and spectrum analyzer using DSP chip. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed design method through experiments using developed transmitter and receiver modules. This system can be used as a high-performance commercial system.

  • The high power amplifier (HPA) for broadcasting transmitter systems has nonlinear property in terms of input signal power. Hence, it produces AM/AM and AM/PM modulation to the modulated signal. Therefore, the non-linearity results in bandwidth expansion and nonlinear distortion to in-band signal. In this paper, we propose a simple sain-based predistorter that requires less computational burden and less time for the full initialization of the pre-distorter ROM table.

An underwater communication by AM technic (AM 방식의 수중통신)

  • An underwater communication technic using AM modulated ultrasonicwave was studied. The experiment were performed in the ahechoic water tank with 60KHz carrier wave and the frequency response of the system by demodulated signals were measured varing the degree of modulation and distance between transmitter and receiver. The bandwidth of transmitted signals was limited by the acoustic characteristics. As the result, it was found out that this kind of system is applicable to the underwater speech communication.

  • In this paper, the possibility and necessity of the digital broadcasting propulsion in AM and FM is presented based on DRM and DRM+ transmission modes, They are the members of series technological family in digital radio development. As the frequency utilization, the application of DRM+ is flexible in any mode such as IN-BAND or OUT-OF-BAND. When the digital audio broadcasting is planned at LOW-VHF bandwidth such as TV channel No.5 and NO.6 being adjacent to FM band and OUT-Of-BAND DRM+ technology is applied, there is no collision and jamming. Particularly, in the IN-BAND Hybrid mode, it is mentioned that there was the difficulty problem for multiple SFN transmitters uses. Not like the IN-BAND mode the OUT-OF-BAND mode lets multiple transmitters, because neighbor transmitters do not interfere each other. Digital transmitter can be combined with the existing FM transmitter. The intensity of power and size of area can be easily determined according to local broadcasters' condition. And the OUT-OF-BAND mode is advantageous for AM/FM integration in digital radio receiver manufacturing, which makes the conversion schedule much shorter.

Sub-band Spreading Technique for Adaptive Modulation in OFDM Systems

  • We propose a sub-band spreading technique for adaptive modulation (AM) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in order to reduce signaling overheads and to average frequency selective fading channels causing different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values for subcarriers in each subband. The conventional sub-band based AM schemes can also reduce signaling overheads and complexity for allocating a resource per sub-band at a time. However, they may suffer from the channel variation in a sub-band when the sub-band size is larger than the channel coherence bandwidth (BW). The sub-band spreading at the transmitter enables the received symbols in each sub-band to have an identical reliability even in a frequency selective fading channel. We rigorously analyze the averaged SNR value at the receiver of the sub-band spreading system and the analyzed average SNR in a sub-band is used for an adaptation criterion. The proposed AM scheme outperforms the conventional sub-band based OFDM scheme without spreading, and it can yield better throughput performance than the conventional subcarrier based AM schemes when we consider the signaling overheads.

Harmonic Signal Linearization of Nonlinear Power Amplifier Using Digital Predistortion for Multiband Wireless Transmitter (다중 대역 송신을 위한 디지털 사전 왜곡 기법을 이용한 비선형 전력 증폭기의 고조파 신호 선형화)

  • In this paper, a nonlinear relationship between an input complex envelope and an output complex envelope of m-th harmonic zone is theoretically analyzed, and AM/$AM_m$ and AM/$PM_m$ are defined. A scheme to extract these characteristics from measured in-phase and quadrature-phase data is suggested. The proposed analysis is verified with a fundamental-fundamental and fundamental-third harmonic measurements for a InGaP power amplifier(PA). Based on the harmonic-band nonlinear analysis and extraction scheme, a new technique to send a signal in m-th harmonic band with a harmonic signal Linearization Digital Predistortion(DPD) scheme is presented. A numerical analysis and a Look-Up Table(LUT) based DPD algorithms to linearize output signal on m-th harmonic zone are developed. For a 16- and a 64-QAM input signals, a DPD for third harmonic signal linearization is implemented, and output spectrum and signal constellation are measured. The wholly distorted signals are linearized, and thus the measured Error Vector Magnitudes (EVM) are 6.4 % and 6.5 % respectively. The results show that a proposed scheme linearizes a nonlinearly distorted harmonic band signals. The proposed nonlinear analysis and predistortion scheme can be applied to multiband transmitter in next generation software defined radio(SDR)/cognitive radio(CR) wireless system.

Performance analysis of Non-linear Power Amplifier on The DS-CDMA Systems (비선형 전력증폭기로인한 DS-CDMA 통신시스템의 성능분석)

  • In this paper the system performance degradation resulting from nonlinear transmitter power amplifier which is essential to increase the efficiency is analysed in a CDMA system. The power amplifier is modeled by its AM-AM, AM-PM characteristics. The effects of power amplifier's nonlinearity such as intersymbol interference, phase distonion on the RF system performance were visualized by examining the distorted time domain waveforms, signal vector constellation. And through the investigation of the power spectrum density of the transmitted signal, spectral regrowth or sideband regrowth which is result from amplitude distortion can be seen. All these characteristics result in BER performance degradation due to other user interferences and intersymbol interference. The analysis technique described here applies not only to power amplifier but also to any other nonlinear components such as mixers and switches. Also the effects of adjacent channel interference and supurious emission can be analysed between different systems.
