Supersonic Combustion Studies for SCRamjet Engines

  • Experiments were performed in order to examine the stability of hydrocarbon-fueled flames in cavity flameholders in supersonic airflows. Methane and ethylene were burned in two different cavity configurations having aft walls ramped at 22.5 and 90$^{\circ}$. Air stagnation temperatures were 590 K at Mach 2 and 640 K at Mach 3. Lean blowout limits showed dependence on the air mass flowrates. Visual observations, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of nitric oxide (NO), and Schlieren imaging were used to investigate these phenomena. Large differences were noted between cavity floor and cavity ramp injection schemes. Cavity ramp injection provided better performance in most cases. Ethylene pilots have a wider range of stable operation than methane. Fuel flowrates at ignition showed similar trends as lean blowout limits, but higher flowrates were required.

  • A survey is offered of the present status of microaluminized propellants industrially used worldwide in most space applications, but new directions are also pointed out making profitable use of the nanoaluminized propellants currently tested in many laboratories. Different industrial- and research-type of solid rocket propellants, mainly but not only, of the well-known family oxidizer/Al/HTPB(oxidizer being AP, AN or a mixture of the two) were experimentally analyzed at the Space Propulsion Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano. In general, they feature the same nominal composition but implement different grain size distributions of the oxidizer or metal fuel. The basic properties of all formulations were compared to that of a standard propellant already certified for flight.

Numerical Prediction of Flow and Heat Transfer on Lubricant Supplying and Scavenging Flow Path of An Aero-engine Lubrication System

  • This paper presents a numerical model of internal flows in a lubricant supplying and scavenging flow path of an aero-engine lubrication system. The numerical model was built in the General Analysis Software of Aero-engine Lubrication System, GASLS, developed by Northwestern Polytechnical University. The lubricant flow flux, pressure and temperature distribution at steady state were calculated. GASLS is a general purpose computer program employed a 1-D steady state network algorithm for analyzing flowrates, pressures and temperatures in a complex flow network. All kinds of aero-engine lubrication systems can be divided into finite correlative typical elements and nodes from which the calculation network be developed in GASLS. Special emphasis is on how to use combined elements which is a type of typical elements to replace some complex components like bearing bores, accessory gearboxes or heat exchangers. This method can reduce network complexity and improve calculation efficiency. Final computational results show good agreement with experimental data.

Robust Fault Detection Based on Aero Engine LPV Model

  • This paper develops an aero engine LPV mathematical model to exactly describe aero engine dynamic process characteristics, eliminate the effect of modeling error. Design FDF with eigenstructure assignment. The simulation results of turbofan engine control system sensor fault show that this method has good performance in focusing discrimination in fault signal with modeling eror, enhancing the robustness to unknown input, detecting accuracy is high and satisfiying real-time requirement.

Flow Control Analysis of S-duct Diffuser Inlet

  • An numerical investigation of the flow characteristics inside a diffusing S-duct inlet with and without vortex generators(VGs) was conducted. The primary discussion herein focuses on development of secondary flow in the S-duct with and without VGs, pressure recovery and distortion at the exit are also discussed. Full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite volume method and $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is employed. In order to validate the credibility of the numerical methods, predicted results of surface pressure are compared with flight test for the S-duct inlet without VGs, and it shows fairly good agreement. The result shows that VGs alter the flow characteristics in the S-duct and are effective in reducing distortion and ineffective in improving pressure recovery.

An Optimization Method Based on Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Scramjet Forebody/Inlet Design

  • The design of a scramjet inlet is a process to search global optimization results among those factors influencing the geometry of scramjet in their ranges for some requirements. An optimization algorithm of hybrid genetic algorithm based on genetic algorithm and simplex algorithm was established for this purpose. With the sample provided by a uniform method, the compressive angles which also are wedge angles of the inlet were chosen as the inlet design variables, and the drag coefficient, total pressure recovery coefficient, pressure rising ratio and the combination of these three variables are designed specifically as different optimization objects. The contrasts of these four optimization results show that the hybrid genetic algorithm developed in this paper can capably implement the optimization process effectively for the inlet design and demonstrate some good adaptability.
