  • Ultra thin TiN films (50∼700nm thickness) were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steel substrates using a reactive DC magnetron sputtering deposition process to investigate their wear and friction properties. Dry sliding wear tests of the films were carried out against hardened steel and alumina counterparts using a pin-on-disk type wear tester at room temperature. Variation of friction coefficient was measured as a function of film thickness, load, sliding speed and roughness of the substrate. Worn surfaces of the film were examined by a scanning electron microscope. Wear resistance of the TiN film increased with the increase of the film thickness. The TiN film showed relatively high wear resistance in spite of its ultra thin thickness when it is mated by the steel counterpart, while it showed poor wear resistance with the alumina counterpart. The good wear resistance with the steel counterpart was explained by the formation of oxide layers on the film surface and sound interface character between the ultra thin film and the substrate.

  • Uniaxial displacement controlled tests were performed on annealed Type 304 stainless steel at room temperature. A servo-controlled testing machine and strain measurement on the gage length were employed to measure the response to a given input. The test results exhibit that the flow stress increases nonlinearly with the strain rate and the relaxed stress at the end of the relaxation periods depends strongly on the strain rate preceding the relaxation test. The rate-dependent inelastic deformation behavior is simulated using a new unified viscoplasticity model that has the rate-dependent format of nonlinear kinematic hardening rule, which plays a key role in modeling the rate dependence of relaxation behavior. The model does not employ yield or loading/unloading criteria and consists of a flow law and the evolution laws of two tensor and one scalar-valued state variables.

  • To study the effect of welding methods on the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) behavior of welded AISI type 316L and 304 austenitic stainless steel, the Slow Strain Rate Technique(SSRT) has been adopted in the boiling 45 wt% $MgCl_2$ solution. The results are as follows. 1) Welded sections are more susceptible than base metal in SCC, and the rank of SCC, and the rasistance in welding method is TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and ARC. 2) The Ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and the strain of both base metal and welded joint are reduced as decreasing extension rate. 3) The SCC resistance of 316L base metal and welded sections are superior than that of 304. 4) The tendency of pitting and the SCC suseptibility are agreed well, and the SCC site is welded deposit section in 316L whereas HAZ in 304.

  • During the cold forming, due to high working pressure acting on the die surface, failure mechanics must be considered before die design. One of the main reasons of die failure in industrial application of metal forming technologies is wear. The mechanisms of wear are consisted of adhesion, abrasion, erosion and so on. Die wear affects the tolerances of formed parts, metal flow, and costs of process. The only way to control these failures is to develop a prediction method on die wear suitable in the design state in order to optimize the process. The wear system is used to analyse 'operating variables' and 'system structure'. In this study, with AISI D2, AISI 1020, AISI 304SS materials, a series of the wear experiments of pin-on-disk type to obtain the wear coefficients from Archard's wear model and the upsetting processes are carried out to observe the wear phenomenon during the cold forming process. The analysis of upsetting processes are performed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The result of the analysis is used to investigate the die wear the processes, and the analysis simulated die wear profiles are compared with the experimental measured die wear profiles.

  • In this paper, different curvature-rates are controlled to highlight the characteristic of viscoplastic response in cyclic bending tests. The curvature-ovalization apparatus, which was designed by Pan et al. (1998), is used for conducting the curvature-controlled experiments on thin-walled tubular specimens for AISI 304 stainless steel under cyclic bending. The results reveals that the faster the curvature-rate implies, the fast degree of hardening of the metal tube. However, the ovalization of the tube cross-section increases when the curvature-rate increases.

  • A cracking failure of a austenitic stainless steel elbow in a naphtha cracking line in a petrochenmical plant occurred, resulting in leakage of organic compound flowing inside the elbow. Due to the failure, emergency shutdown of the plant was enforced to repair the troubled part of the line. The repair cost as well as production loss during the unscheduled plant shutdown has cost the company a great amount of financial loss. In this studies, a failure analysis of the cracked elbow was performed using NDT, chemical analysis, microstructural analysis including optical microscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy with EPMA, mechanical testings such as tensile testing, hardness testing and Charphy impact test fractography. The results indicated that several problems such as a welding defect and presence of a detrimental phase which was found to be relate to improper postforming heat treatment process was identified and the failure was concluded to be due to a low temperature embrittlement of the defect-containing elbows.

  • Since ceramic layers coated on machinery components inevitably experience the changes in their properties it is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of ceramic coating layers nondestructively for a reliable use of coated components and 4heir remaining life prediction. To address such a need, in the present study, an ultrasonic backward radiation technique is applied to investigate the characteristics of leaky Rayleigh surface waves propagating through the very thin TiN ceramic layers coated on AISI 1045 steel or austenitic 304 steel substrate with three different conditions of surface roughness, coating layer thickness and wear condition. In the experiments performed in the present work, the peak angle and the peak amplitude of ultrasonic backward radiation profile varied sensitively according to three specimen preparation renditions. in fact, this result demonstrates a high possibility of the ultrasonic backward radiation as an effective tool for the nondestructive characterization of the resting layers even in such a thin regime.

  • Niobium nitride (NbN) films were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steels by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted dc magnetron sputtering method at different ICP powers, and the effects of ICP power on the phase formation, mechanical and chemical properties of the films were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to analyze the crystal structure and micro-knoop hardness was used to measure the hardness of the films. Also, 3-D mechanical profiler and a ball-on-disk wear tester were used to measure the thickness of the films and to estimate wear characteristics, respectively. The thickness of the films decreased but their hardness increased with increasing ICP power, and it was confirmed that only cubic ${\delta}$-NbN(200) remained at high ICP power. At lower ICP powers, a mixture of the hexagonal ${\delta}^{\prime}$-NbN and cubic ${\delta}$-NbN phases was obtained in the films and the hardness decreased. The corrosion potential value increased gradually with increasing ICP power, but the changes of ICP power did not significantly influence the overall corrosion resistance.
