This paper presents an optimization process using Harmony Search Algorithm for minimum weight of steel space frames under earthquake effects according to Turkish Earthquake Code (2007) specifications. The optimum designs are carried out by selecting suitable sections from a specified list including W profiles taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The stress constraints obeying AISC-Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications, lateral displacement constraints and geometric constraints are considered in the optimum designs. A computer program is coded in MATLAB for the purpose to incorporate with SAP2000 OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface) to perform structural analysis of the frames under earthquake loads. Three different steel space frames are carried out for four different seismic earthquake zones defined in Turkish Earthquake Code (2007). Results obtained from the examples show the applicability and robustness of the method.

The seismic behavior of framed structure with Chevron-type bucking restrained braces were investigated and their behavior factors were evaluated following the procedure proposed in ATC-19 & ATC-34. Two types of structures, building frame systems and dual systems, with 4, 8, 12, and 16 stories were designed per the IBC 2000, the AISC LRFD and the AISC/SEAOC Recommended Provisions for BRBF. Nonlinear static pushover analyses were carried out to observe the plastic hinge formation and to identify the loads and the displacements at the yield and the ultimate states. Time history analyses were also carried out to compute the permanent displacement md the dissipated hysteretic energy. According to the analysis results, the response modification factors of model structures fumed out to be larger than what is proposed in the provision in low story structures, and a little smaller in medium-story structures. The dual systems, even though designed with smaller seismic load, showed superior static and dynamic performances.
In this paper, an optimization process using Genetic Algorithm (GA) that mimics biological processes is presented for optimum design of planar frames with semi-rigid connections by selecting suitable standard sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The stress constraints as indicated in AISC-LRFD (American Institute of Steel Construction - Load and Resistance Factor Design), maximum lateral displacement constraints and geometric constraints are considered for optimum design. Two different planar frames with semi-rigid connections taken from the literature are carried out first without considering concrete slab effects in finite element analyses and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The same optimization procedures are then repeated for full and semi rigid planar frames with composite (steel and concrete) beams. A program is developed in MATLAB for all optimization procedures. Results obtained from this study proved that consideration of the contribution of the concrete on the behavior of the floor beams provides lighter planar frames.
The seismic behavior of a framed structure with chevron-type buckling restrained braces was investigated and their behavior factors, such as overstrength, ductility, and response modification factors, were evaluated. Two types of structures, building frame systems and dual systems, with 4, 8, 12, and 16 stories were designed per the IBC 2003, the AISC LRFD and the AISC Seismic Provisions. Nonlinear static pushover analyses using two different loading patterns and incremental dynamic analysis using 20 earthquake records were carried out to compute behavior factors. Time history analyses were also conducted with another 20 earthquakes to obtain dynamic responses. According to the analysis results, the response modification factors turned out to be larger than what is proposed in the provision in low-rise structures, and a little smaller than the code-values in the medium-rise structures. The dual systems, even though designed with smaller seismic load, showed superior static and dynamic performances.
This paper presents an optimization process using Genetic Algorithm (GA) for minimum weight by selecting suitable standard sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The stress constraints obeying AISC-LRFD (American Institute of Steel Construction-Load and Resistance Factor Design), lateral displacement constraints being the top and inter-storey drift, mid-span deflection constraints for the beams and geometric constraints are considered for optimum design by using GA that mimics biological processes. Optimum designs for three different space frames taken from the literature are carried out first without considering concrete slab effects in finite element analyses for the constraints above and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The same optimization procedures are then repeated for the case of space frames with composite (steel and concrete) beams. A program is coded in MATLAB for the optimization processes. Results obtained in the study showed that consideration of the contribution of the concrete on the behavior of the floor beams results with less steel weight and ends up with more economical designs.

The seismic performance of a column splice fabricated with PJP (partial joint penetration) welds for special moment frames was experimentally evaluated in this study. The steel materials that were used for the specimens included SHN490 and SN490 steel, or the newly developed structural steel for seismic application. Fabricating the column splice with PJP welds is highly attractive from the perspective of reducing the welding cost and the construction time. PJP welds in column splices are viewed apprehensively, however, because several tests have shown that PJP welds in thick members tend to become brittle under tensile loads. The column splices in this testing program were designed for the expected plastic moment of the column that current seismic codes typically require. The design strength of partial-penetration welded joints was determined according to the 2005 AISC-LRFD Specification. Three-point loading was applied monotonically, using a universal testing machine, such thatthe column splice joints were subjected to pure tension. The test results showed that the PJP welded splices, if designed properly, can develop a strength exceeding that of the actual plastic moment of the column. The specimen made of the SM490 rolled section, however, showed a brittle fracture at the splice soon after achieving the actual plastic moment of the column. The tensile coupon test results also showed that the material properties of SM490 steel are more unpredictable. Overall, although the test data are limited, the SHN490 and SN490 steel specimens showed a superior and reliable performance.
This paper presents the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) of beams or girders with continuous lateral support at top flange. Traditional moment gradient factors ($C_b$) given by AISC in LRFD Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and by AASHTO in LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were reviewed. Finite-element method buckling analyses of doubly symmetric I-shaped beams with continuous top bracing were conducted to develop new moment gradient factors. A uniformly distributed load was applied at midheight and either or both end moments were applied at the ends of beams. The proposed solutions are simple and accurate for use by engineers to determine the LTB resistance of beams.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the behavior of eccentric lightweight aggregate concrete-encased composite columns. This study aims at verifying the validity of such type of concrete in composite construction and checking the adequacy of the AISC-LRFD and the British Bridge Code BS 5400 specifications in predicting the column strength. Sixteen full-scale pin ended columns subjected to uniaxial bending about the major axis in symmetrical single curvature were tested.

The objective of the research is to develop an algorithm for the optimum design of two-dimensional braced steel frames using an advanced analysis, which considers both material and geometric nonlinearties. Since both nonlinearties are considered in analysis process, Optimum design algorithm which does not require to calculate K-factor is presented. A multi-level discrete optimization technique with two parameters that uses the information of structural system and separate member has been developed. The structural analysis is performed by the relined plastic-hinge method which is based on zero-length plastic hinge theory. Optimization problem are formulated by AISC-LRFD code. The feasibility, validity and efficiency of the developed algorithm is demonstrated by the results of the braced steel frame.
In this study, a continuous optimum design model with its application program for plane steel frame structures developed. In the model, the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) transforming the nonlinear optimization problem with multidesign variables and constraints into an unconstrained minimization problem and the refined plastic hinge analysis method as one of the most effective second-order inelastic analysis methods for steel frame structures were implemented. The total weight of a steel frame structure was taken as the objective function, and the AISC-LRFD code requirements for the local and member buckling, flexural strength, shear strength, axial strength and size of the cross-sectional shapes of members were used for the derivation of constraint equations. To verify the appropriateness of the present model, the optimum designs of serveral plane steel frame structures subject to vertical and horizontal loads were conducted.
