  • Purpose: Hyperglycemia accelerates the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), a group of compounds formed via non-enzymatic glycation/glycoxidation. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is related to oxidative stress, resulting in some overgeneration of AGEs. The accumulation of AGEs in T2DM patients leads to increased inflammation, DNA damage, tissue damage, progression of diabetic microvascular disease, and nephropathy. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an intracellular enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of heme. Expression of HO-1 in the endothelium and in muscle monocytes/macrophages was upregulated upon exposure to reactive oxygen species or oxidized low-density lipoprotein. Cells activated by oxidative stress are reported to release HO-1 in the serum. In the current study, we discuss the oxidative status according to the level of AGEs and the association of HO-1 with AGEs or urinary DNA damage marker in type 2 diabetic Korean patients. Methods: This study enrolled 36 diabetic patients. Subjects were classified into two groups by serum AGEs level (Low AGEs group: < 0.85 ng/mL serum AGEs; High AGEs group: ≥ 0.85 ng/mL serum AGEs). Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Blood and urinary parameters were measured using commercial kits. Results: No significant differences were observed in the general characteristics and body composition between the two groups. Serum HO-1 concentration was significantly higher in the High AGEs group than in the Low AGEs group. After adjustment of age and gender, a correlation was performed to assess the association between serum HO-1 and serum AGEs or urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). Our results indicate that serum HO-1 is positively correlated with serum AGEs and urinary 8-OHdG. Conclusion: Taken together, our results indicate that in diabetes patients, a high level of HO-1 is associated with a high concentration of AGEs and 8-OHdG, probably reflecting a protective response against oxidative stress.

  • The purpose of study examined the changes of the man's underclothes from the ancient ages to the early modern ages. The method of study researched literatures and possessions of the museum. In ancient ages, a suit of clothes had the functions of both underclothes and outer garments. In middle ages, underclothes were not exposed and the importance was not recognized while they were worn to show the sense of sin and humility or to punish criminals. In early modern ages, the importance of underclothes recognized as they were exposed. In Renaissance period, the fashion of the day influenced much on the underclothes. In Baroque ages, the functions of underclothes were different according to sexes and men wore underclothes to show their social status. As the outer garments were shortned, shirt wwere also conspicuously exposed. In Rococo ages, drawers were tightened due to the influence of outer garments, men exposed their shirts to show the social status and underclohtes were usually worn to express sexual attraction. Men's underclothes had the functions of class distinction from the ancient ages to the modern ages, except the middle ages and underclothes had the additional functions such as supporting body-shape and sex attraction. The fashion of the day influenced on the changes of the shapes of the shapes of men's underclothes and the changes of outer garments were reflected on underclothes.

  • K-Ar ages on biotites have been determined from the Proterozoic Buncheon and Hongjesa granitic rocks in comparison with the Rb-Sr whole-rock ages to investigate the ages of metamorphic events. The Rb-Sr whole-rock ages determinations on the Buncheon and Hongjesa granitoid rocks were previously reported as 2,100Ma and 1,700Ma, respectively. K-Ar ages on biotites separated from the studied rock have revealed three different age groups such as 1) 1,200~1,300Ma, 2) 600~700Ma and 3) 300~400Ma. The Rb-Sr whole-rock ages for the granitic rocks represent the time of emplacement, whereas the K-Ar ages on biotites generally indicate the time of metamorphism or alteration. The large discordance in the two age systems may not be explained as indicating the cooling period of the granitic batholiths. The K-Ar ages on biotites from the granitoid rocks might not be simply interpreted as the age of the last phase of metamorphism, since the granitic rocks had been undergone multistages of amphibolite facies-metamorphism in the Precambrian period. During the multistages of intermediate grade metamorphism, $^{40}Ar$-loss could be inevitably taken place as the metamorphic temperatures went up above the blocking temperature of biotite ($300{\pm}50^{\circ}C$). The results of the K-Ar dating on biotites from this study are probably minimum ages or hydrothermal alteration ages.

  • In this paper, we consider relationship of the monastic mathematics and the arts of the middle ages. Because mathematics and arts are effects of the spirit of the ages. Here, we concern with the Rome and the religion of Christ. Next, we think of the bible and Christian doctrine and then compare with Christian arts and arts of the customs of the middle ages. The middle ages is the period of women's inequality according to the feudal system. So we investigate the correlation of the christianity, arts of the middle ages, women's inequality and monastic mathematics which is worthless in mathematics history.
