  • As model waterborne acrylic coatings, mono-dispersed poly(butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate) copolymer latexes of random copolymer and core/shell type graft copolymer were prepared by seeded multi-staged emulsion polymerization with particle size of $180{\sim}200$ nm using semi-batch type process. Sodium lauryl sulfate and potassium persulfate were used as an emulsifier and an initiator, respectively. The effect of particle texture including core/shell phase ratio, glass transition temperature and crosslinking density, and film forming temperature on the film formation and final properties of film was investigated using SEM, AFM, and UV in this study. The film formation behavior of model latex was traced simultaneously by the weight loss measurement and by the change of tensile properties and UV transmittance during the entire course of film formation. It was found that the increased glass transition temperature and higher crosslinking degree of latex resulted in the delay of the onset of coalescence of particles by interdiffusion during film forming process. This can be explained qualitatively in terms of diffusion rate of polymer chains. However, the change of weight loss during film formation was insensitive to discern each film forming stages-I, II and III.

  • We investigate characteristics of J-aggregation as take advantage of LB technic. In order to confirm the applications possible for the molecular electronic device, the morphological properties of merocyanine dye were investigated by AFM. $\pi$-A curves investigated the surface pressure of the LB film from a liquid to a solid state ranged between 90 and 100 mN/m. We observed aggregation and it's characteristics by using visible reflection spectroscopy. This paper focuses on results obtained in mercocyanide dye. When LB films of merocyanine dye are mixed with arachidic acid, J-aggregate formation is exhibited. J-aggregate formation has been serving as typical systems in revealing the physical and structural aspects of nano-sized molecular aggregates constructed as muiltilayers.

  • The micellization behavior and the metal-nanoparticle formation in PDEAEMA-b-PHEGMA double hydrophilic block copolymers are investigated. The hydrophobic PDEAEMA block is pH-sensitive: at low pH it can be protonated and it becomes hydrophilic, leading to molecular solubility, whereas at higher pH micelles are formed; the behavior is studied by DLS, NMR and AFM. In these micellar nanoreactors, metal nanorystals nucleate and grow upon reduction with sizes in the range of a few nm's as observed by TEM and XRD. Similarly, metal nanocrystals can be formed within pH-sensitive microgels (${\sim}250nm$ in diameter), synthesized by emulsion copolymerization of DEAEMA, which also exhibit reversible swelling properties in water by adjusting the pH.

  • Nanoscale fabrication of silicon substrate in an aqueous solution based on the use of atomic force microscopy was demonstrated. A specially designed cantilever with diamond tip, allowing the formation of damaged layer on silicon substrate easily by a simple scratching process (Tribo-Nanolithography, TNL), has been applied instead of conventional silicon cantilever for scanning. A slant nanostructure can be fabricated by a process in which a thin damaged layer rapidly forms in the substrate at the diamond tip-sample junction along scanning path of the tip and simultaneously the area uncovered with the damaged layer is being etched. This study demonstrates how the TNL parameters can affect the formation of damaged layer and the shape of 3-D structure, hence introducing a new process of AFM-based nanolithography in aqueous solution.

  • In general, alkanethiolates having carboxylic acid in the tail group have been used as biorecepton. In this study, we have immobilized a cytochrome c protein using conjugated aromaticthiolates in order to improve the electrical property and physical stability of alkanethilolates. The pattern formation of self-assembled aromaticthiolate monolayers was as follow. Aromatic thiolates bound on the gold surface by the adsorption of 4'-mercapto-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid and 4-mercapto-[1,1';4',1']terphenyl-4'-carboxylic acid were oxidized by the irradiation of deep UV light through a negative mask. The negative type pattern of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was obtained by developing with a deionized water. The pattern formation and electrical conductivity of aromaticthiolate SAMs was investigated by the measurements of STM and AFM. In addition, cytochrome c or ferrocene amide was immobilized onto the patterned substrate. We also studied on the effect of conjugated aromatic thiolates on the electrical activity of cytochrome c or ferrocene amide by cyclic voltammetry.

  • In this paper, the influences of microstructural and surface morphological developments on the soft magnetic properties and giant magneto-impedance (GMI) effect of the $Fe_{73.5-x}Cr_{x}Si_{13.5}B_{9}Nb_{3}Au_1$ (x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) alloys have been presented. It was found that the Cr addition slightly decreased the mean grain size of $\alpha-Fe(Si)$ grains. AFM results indicate a large variation of surface morphology of density and size of protrusions along the ribbon plane due to microstructural changes caused by thermal annealing with increasing Cr content. Ultrasoft magnetic properties of the nanocrystallized samples were noticeably enhanced by properly heat treatments at $T_a=540^{\circ}C$ such as an increase of the magnetic permeability and the decrease of coercivity, which is likely due to the formation of nanoscale $\alpha-Fe(Si)$ phase which reduced the magnetoelastic anisotropy of samples. Accordingly, the GMI effect was observed in the annealed samples. The correlation between the microstructure, surface morphology, and soft magnetic properties were explained by nucleation and growth model.

  • Scanning probe Microscope(SPM) such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope(STM) and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM) was shown to be the powerful tool for nano-scale characterization of material surfaces Using this technique, surface morphology of the cyclically deformed Cu or Cu-Al single crystal was observed. The surface became proportionately rough as the number of cycles increased, but after some number of cycles no further change was observed. Slip steps with the heights of 100 to 200 nm and the widths of 1000 to 2000 nm were prevailing at the stage. The slipped distance of one slip system at the surface was not uniform. and formation of the extrusions or intrusions was assumed to occur such place. By comparing the morphological change caused by crystallographic orientation, strain amplitude, number of cycles or stacking fault energy, some interesting results which help to clarify the basic mechanism of fatigue damage were obtained. Furthermore, applicability of the scanning tunneling microscopy to fatigue damage is discussed.

  • The micro-defects in the SiC single crystals were characterized using a variety of the microscopic techniques (OM, TEM, AFM). It was observed that the hexagonal-plate precipitates and the longitudinal micropipes are present inside of SiC wafers. TEM results exhibited that there are amorphous phase in the SiC wafer and the phase were originated from the formation of the nonstoichiometric $Si_{1-x}_xC_x$ phases during growth process.
