  • Partial safety factors of the load, resistance, and reliability function are evaluated according to the target probability of failure on sliding mode of monolithical vertical caisson of composite breakwaters. After reliability function is formulated for sliding failure mode of caisson of composite breakwaters regarding bias of wave force, uncertainties of random variables related to loads, strengths are analyzed. Reliability analysis for the various conditions of water depth, geometric, and wave conditions is performed using Level II AFDA model for the sliding failure. Furthermore, the reliability model is also applied to the real caisson of composite breakwaters of Daesan, Dong- hae, and Pohang harbor. By comparing the required width of caisson of composite breakwater according to target probability of failure with the other results, the partial safety factors evaluated in this study are calibrated straightforwardly. Even though showing a little difference on the 1% of target probability, it may be found that the present results agree well with the other results in every other target probability of failure.

  • Static reliability models are introduced to analyze the armor stability of rubble-mound breakwaters. Contrasted to the deterministic model, reliability models can estimate the probability of failure directly and calculate the influence of each design variables quantitatively. Thus, it can be possible to design armor units of the rubble-mound breakwaters rationally. In this study FMA(First-order Mean-value Approach), FDA(First-order Design-value Approach) and AFDA(Approximate Full Distribution Approach) of Level II approach of static reliability methods are used to analyze the armor stability of rubble mound breakwaters. The limitations and applications of each approach are studied straight-forwardly.

  • A reliability model of Level II AFDA is developed to analyze the stability of armor units on the sloped coastal structures. Additionally, the partial safety factors of random variables related to armor units can be straightforwardly evaluated by applying the inverse-reliability method in which influence coefficients and uncertainties of random variables, and target probability of failure are combined directly. In particular, a design equation for armor units is derived in terms of the same criteria as deterministic design method in order to apply the reliability-based design method of Level I without some understanding to the reliability analysis. Finally, it is confirmed that several results redesigned by the reliability-based design method of Level I have satisfactorily agreement with results of CEM as well as those of Level II AFDA.

  • A reliability model of Level II AFDA is proposed to analyze the wave run-up occurring by the interaction of incident waves and sloped coastal structures. The reliability model may be satisfactorily calibrated by Level III Monte-Carlo simulation. Additionally, the partial safety factors of random variables related to wave run-up can be straightforwardly evaluated by the inverse-reliability method that use influence coefficients and uncertainties of random variables, and target probability of failure. In particular, a design equation for wave run-up is derived in the same form as that of deterministic design method so that the reliability-based design method of Level I may be applied easily. Finally, it is confirmed that results redesigned by the reliability-based design method of Level I with partial safety factors suggested in this paper are satisfactorily compared with results of CEM(2006) as well as those of Level II AFDA.

  • A reliability analysis has been performed to investigate the systematic stability of multi-failure modes of rubble-mound breakwaters. The reliability functions of four different failure modes are established straightforwardly. AFDA(Approximate Full Distribution Approcah) reliability models for each failure modes are directly developed and satisfactorily calibrated through the comparison with CIAD's results. In the reliability analysis of single failure mode, the probabilities of failure are calculated and the influence coefficients of random variables in the failure modes are properly evaluated. Meanwhile, three different models such as uni-modal bounds, bimodal bounds, and PNET are applied to evaluate the probabilities of failure of multi-failure modes for rubble-mound breakwaters. It may be found that uni-modal bounds tend to overestimate the probability of failure of multi-failure modes. Therefore, for the systematic reliability analysis of multi-failure modes, it is recommended to use bi-modal bounds or PNET which consider the correlation between the failure modes for rubble-mound breakwaters. By introducing the reliability analysis of multi-failure modes, it could be possible to find out the additional probabilities of failure occurred by the multi-failure modes of a multi-component system such as rubble-mound breakwaters.

  • A probability density function of reliability function is derived in this paper, by which the stability of armor units on the rubble-mound breakwater can be studied on the probabilistic approach. To obtain the distribution, each random variable of the reliability function is assumed to follow Gaussian distribution. The distribution function of reliability function is in agreement with the histogram simulated by the Monte-Carlo method. In addition, the failure probability of armor units on the rubble-mound breakwater evaluated by the derived probability density function is shown to have the same order of magnitude as those calculated by FMA and AFDA of moment method. In particular, it is important to note that random variables of the reliability function may be considered to be statistically independent in the reliability analysis of armor units on the rubble-mound breakwater. Therefore, the present approach may be straightforwardly applicable to all of the cases that any random variables in the reliability function are controlled by other distribution functions as well as normal distribution.

  • Two reliability models, AFDA(Approximate Full Distribution Approach) and Monte-Carlo simulation method, are directly developed to study on both hydraulic failure mode of berm recession and structural failure mode of armour breakage of berm breakwaters. By comparing the present results with the results of other researcher, it may be confirmed that two reliability models can be straightforwardly applicable to berm breakwaters. Relative influence of each random variable on hydraulic and structural failure probabilities could be properly analyzed. The upper bound and the lower bound of failure probability can be evaluated by using bi-modal bounds of the multiple failure mode analysis, from which it may be possible to investigate some kinds of dependence into between two failure modes. Finally, it may also be found that the structural failure mode of armour breakage could become a main failure mode of berm breakwaters in the condition of more than any allowable berm recession.

  • Level II AFDA and Level III MCS reliability models are applied to analyze the stability of armor units on trading and coastal harbors in Korea. Hudson's formula and Van der Meer's formula are used in this reliability analysis. Also, probability density functions of reliability index and probability of failure are derived by the additional analysis. In addition, the partial safety factors of all harbors related to armor units can be straightforwardly evaluated by the inverse-reliability method. The upper and lower limits and average level of partial safety factors can be statistically investigated with the results of all cases applied in this paper. Therefore, it may be possible to design armor units of new breakwaters including the uncertainty of random variable and target level by using the present results.

  • Due to frequent occurrence of a localized torrential downpour caused by global warming and change of outflow tendency caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization, risk analysis must be carried out in levee design with uncertainty. In this study, reliability analysis was introduced to quantitatively evaluate the overtopping risk of levee by the uncertainty. First of all, breaking function was established as a function of flood stage and height of levee. All variables of breaking function were considered as random variables following any distribution functions, and the risk was defined as the possibility that the flood stage is formed higher than height of levee. The risk evaluation model was developed with AFDA (Approximate Full Distribution Approach). The flood stage computed by 2-D numerical model FESWMS-2DH was used as input data for the model of levee risk evaluation. Risk for levee submergence were quantitatively presented for levee of Wol-Song-Cheon.
