  • In this research, damage behavior of singly oriented ply (SOP) fiber metal laminate (FML) subjected to concentrated load was studied. The static indentation tests were conducted to study fiber orientation effect on damage behavior of FML. During the static indentation tests, acoustic emission technique (AE) was adopted to study damage characteristics of FML. AE signals were obtained by using AE sensor with 150kHz resonance frequency and the signals were compared with indentation curves of FML. The damage process of SOP FML was divided by three parts, i.e., crack initiation, crack propagation, and penetration. The AE characteristics during crack initiation show that the micro crack is initiated at lower ply of the plate, then propagate along the thickness of the plate with creating tiber debonding. The crack grow along the fiber direction with occurring 60∼80dB AE signal. During the penetration, the fiber breakage was observed. As fiber orientation increases, talc fiber breakage occurs more frequently. The AE signal behaviors support these results. Cumulative AE counts could well predict crack initiation and crack propagation and AE amplitude were useful for the prediction of damage failure mode.

  • This study proposes a monitoring system by cooperating the image information and the sensor information in a sensor network system. The monitoring system proposed in this study is divided into internal spaces, such as offices and laboratories, and external spaces including other various spaces. In the internal spaces, motions in objects are detected through cameras while some peripherals like lights are controlled by analyzing some temperature, humidity, and illuminance data detected by sensor nodes. In the external spaces, it is to watch certain intruders to the internal spaces through the interested region for exceptional time by installing cameras, motion detectors, and body detectors in such interested regions. In the results of the test that was applied to a practically limited environment by implementing some interfaces for the proposed system, it was considered that it is possible to watch surroundings effectively using the image information obtained from cameras and sensor information acquisited from sensor nodes.

  • In this paper, we proposed auto exposure(AE) algorithm and hardware implementation for apply to mobile phone camera. AE is a function that control camera exposure automatically for appropriate to object. Existing AE is using micro controller unit and there are some problems about high expense and slow processing speed. For improve these problems, we proposed AE algorithm for hardware implementation without micro controller unit therefor we can expect improvement about the content of a production and operation speed. We proposed the algorithm that is considered efficiency of hardware resource and the results of hardware implementation of proposed AE algorithm apply to mobile phone camera sensor, we verified proposed AE function.

  • This study presents fault diagnosis of low speed bearing using support vector machine (SVM). The data used in the experiment was acquired using acoustic emission (AE) sensor and accelerometer. The aim of this study is to compare the performance of fault diagnosis based on AE signal and vibration signal with same load and speed. A low speed test rig was developed to simulate various defects with shaft speeds as low as 10 rpm under several loading conditions. In this study, component analysis was also performed to extract the feature and reduce the dimensionality of original data feature. Moreover, the classification for fault diagnosis was also conducted using original data feature without feature extraction. The result shows that extracted feature from AE sensor gave better performance in faults classification.

  • In this paper, we propose an image signal processor (ISP) for an ultra small HD-grade video sensor with 3A (AWB, AE, and AF) in camera phones that can process 720P/30fps videos. In order to enhance the video quality of the systems, it is necessary to achieve the high performance of the 3A. The proposed AWB algorithm multiplies the adjusted coefficients of color gains to the captured data of white objects. The proposed AE method adopts the index step moving based on the difference between an averaged Y luminance and a target luminance, together with IIR filters with variable time responses. The proposed AF technique controls the focus curve to find the lens position that maximizes the integrated high frequency components in luminance values by using highpass filters. Finally, we compare the image quality captured from our system to the quality of a commercial HD camcorder in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed ISP. The proposed ISP system is also fabricated with 0.18um CMOS flash memory process.

  • This paper dealt with the acoustic detection of partial discharge (PD) in insulation oil for insulation diagnostics of oil immersed transformers. Electrode systems such as needle to plane, plane to plane, and floating were fabricated to simulate some defects in transformers. A wide band acoustic emission(AE) sensor with the frequency ranges of 100 kHz~1 MHz and a narrow band AE sensor with the resonant frequency of 140 kHz were used in the experiment. Also, a decoupler and an amplifier were designed to detect and amplify the acoustic signal only. The decoupler separates acoustic signal from DC source without any distortion, and the amplifier has the gain of 40 dB in frequency ranges of 11 kHz~4 MHz. In the experiment, frequency components and propagation characteristics of acoustic signal were analyzed, and an algorithm of positioning of PD occurrence by the time difference of arrival was proposed. From the results, the frequency components of the acoustic signal exist from 50 kHz to 200 kHz and the positioning error of PD calculated by three AE sensors was within 1%.

  • In case of fine machining processes, the cutting state monitoring by a skilled operator is impossible because the physical changes generated during fine machining are very weak. To realize the high efficient and precise fine machining, it is necessary to develop the sensor based monitoring system which is able to detect the fine changes of cutting state. In this paper, the fine acoustic emission monitoring system is developed to monitor the state of the fine machining process. The developed system consists of the AE sensor and the AE signal processing unit. And this has the high-sensitivity and bandwidth which can detect fine AE signal generated during fine machining process. In order to investigate the feasibility of the developed system, evaluation experiments were performed in the fine fixed-abrasive machining processes such as polishing and glass ferrule slicing. Experimental results show that the developed monitoring system possesses an excellent real-time monitoring capability at fine machining processes.

  • In order to measure the real contact force between head and disk on hard disk drive quantitatively, many technique of measurement have been developed. Acoustic Emission Sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of head/disk contact as arms value. In this study using pencil breaking test is proposed for finding contact force using transfer function between calibrated force and real contact force. And real AE data of subambient and tripad slider shows bending and torsional mode and their energy are dominant in hard disk and head contact.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) sensor was used to evaluate the wear-life of CrN-coated steel disks with 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ coating thickness. The relationship between Af and friction signal from scratch test and sliding test was investigated. The first spatting of CrN film was detected by AR signals in the early stage of coating failures, and overall failures by friction signals. Therefore, the conservative design for coating-life should be done using the results of AE signals. Using the percent contact load, the ratio of sliding normal load to the critical scratch load and the number of cycles to failure was measured to predict the wear-life of CrN film. On the wear-life dia-gram the percent contact loads and the number of cycles to failure showed a good linear relationship on the log coordinate. As the load percentage was decreased, the diagram showed that the wear-limits, at which the coated steels survived more than 35,000 cycles, were about 4∼5% of the critical scratch loads.

  • This paper presents development of a different substance monitoring system base reliable detection between the conveyer belt and hopper used for materials transport line of steel company. Conventional detection method of a piece of iron separation system is losed the confidence, because of the place with bad surroundings of measurement so much that materials production line are completely exposed to dust, moisture and vibration. For the solution of this problem, we developed a different substance detection system using the acoustic emittion sensor and one chip microprocessor which is available for bad surroundings and inexpensive. The reliability of the system was estimated by experiment.
