  • Since concrete is an inhomogeneous material consisting of larger aggregates and sand embedded in a cement paste matrix, it relatively shows a complex failure mechanism. In order to assure the reliability of concrete structure. microscopic fracture behavior and internal damage progress of concrete under the loading should be fully understood. In this study, an acoustic emission(AE) technique has been used to clarify microscopic failure mechanism and their corresponding AE signal characteristics of concrete under three-point bending test. In addition 2-dimensional AE source location has been performed to monitor the progress of an internal damage and the successive crack growth behavior during the loading. The relationship between AE signal characteristics and microscopic fracture mechanism is discussed.

  • A acoustic emission (AE) sensor has been used to monitor tool were during milling process. The relation between tool wear and AE RMS (Root mean Square) signal was investigated experimentally. A avaliable monitoring index for monitoring toolwear was newly extracted form AE RMS. And on-line monitoring program was developed. The proposed monitoring system has verified experimentally by roughing end milling titanium alloy with TIN coated HSS tool.

  • A study has been made to investigate the acoustic emission(AE) behavior during the tensile and fracture tests of an Al-Li 8090 alloy, and to correlate it with the deformation mechanisms as a function of microstructure and plate orientation. Mechanical tests and AE measurements were conducted on the specimens with different microstructures (the ${\delta}'$ phase dominant microstructure and the $S'+{\delta}'$ microstructure) and with different orientations (L and ST). In the ${\delta}'$ structure, continuous emissions were produced in both the L and ST oriented specimens, while only the burst emissions were observed to occur in the $S'+{\delta}'$ structure. It was inferred from the above results that continuous type emissions were mainly attributed to the shearing of coherent ${\delta}'$ precipitates in the ${\delta}'$ structure, while the burst type emissions were produced due to the shearing or microcracking of incoherent S' phase in the $S'+{\delta}'$ structure. As to the effect of plate orientation, the ST oriented specimens showed more burst emissions than the LT oriented ones. A large number of burst emissions produced in the ST specimen were presumably due to the rapid crack propagation along the intergranular boundary located parallel to the crack propagation direction.

  • This paper presents the assessment of 7-wire strand monitoring using acoustic emission technique for bridges. 7-wire strand is widely used construction materials to provide additional tensile force to bridges. PSC (PreStressed Concrete) bridge and cable-stayed bridge are representatives for such cases. However, as the bridge aging progresses recently, corrosion problems of strand are emerging. For this reason, various NDT (Non-Destructive Test) methods for cable inspection are being studied and applied to the field. One of the NDT methods, acoustic emission technique, is known as an effective technique to detect cable damage and breakage. In this study, to evaluate the applicability of acoustic emission technique to bridges, acoustic emission signals according to damage of the strand were acquired and analyzed by tensile test. Moreover, The optimal AE sensor type was selected for field application. As a result, it is considered that the acoustic emission technique will be able to detect corrosion breakage and signs of rupture.

  • In this study, an effective application method of AE technique for the detection of fatigue crack in multi-girder steel bridges has been proposed. The applicability has been examined through the laboratory works with bridge model. The proposed analytical method which evaluates the remaining fatigue lives of structural members may improve the rational determination of the priority of inspection for structural members assuming to have fatigue cracks. Laboratory tests for the application of AE technique to steel girder bridges show that the frequency bands of traffic noise are in the range between 10 show that the frequency bands of traffic noise are in the range between 100~200 kHz and the AE signal raised from fatigue cracks is concentrated around 400~500 kHz. Therefore. R30 sensor is proved to be the most suitable for the detection of cracks in steel girder bridges. A linear proportionality between the crack propagation and the frequency of AE signals has been obtained. In addition, an economic and effective source location method for steel girder bridges was studied through experiments.

  • An acoustic emission technique was applied to the structural strength test for the structural integrity evaluation of the nozzle assembly. These AE results were compared with data from the strain gages and displacement transducer. NDT using X-ray technique was performed to improve the test reliability before and after each test. In this structural integrity evaluation of the nozzle assembly, the internal crack initiation in the structure could not be precisely revealed by the strain and displacement results but the location and load level of the initiated crack could be precisely evaluated by using AE technique. From this test, it was proven that some new cracks can be generated in composite liner of nozzle assembly under the unexpected load due to interference between obturator and nozzle and these can be a cause of the unexpected abnormal failure.

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding by using acoustic emission (AE) signals and doing a source location for weld heat affected zone (HAZ) through tensile testing. This study was carried out an SWS 490A high strength steel for electric shield metal arc welding, SMAW; $CO_2$ gas metal arc welding, GMAW($CO_2$); and gas tungsten arc welding, GTAW/TIG. Data displays are based on the measured parameters of the AE signals, along with environmental variables such as time and load. For instance, Gutenberg-Richter magnitude-frequency relationship (G-R MFR) offers useful b-value in data analysis. Namely event identification, source location gives the X- and Y-coordinates of the AE source. And K-means clustering analysis by Euclidean distance confirmed that was powerful to source location. Generally, strength of welded metal zone was stronger than strength of base metal. As the result, confirmed certainly that fracture is produced in HAZ instead of welded metal zone from source location.

  • In case of fine machining processes, the cutting state monitoring by a skilled operator is impossible because the physical changes generated during fine machining are very weak. To realize the high efficient and precise fine machining, it is necessary to develop the sensor based monitoring system which is able to detect the fine changes of cutting state. In this paper, the fine acoustic emission monitoring system is developed to monitor the state of the fine machining process. The developed system consists of the AE sensor and the AE signal processing unit. And this has the high-sensitivity and bandwidth which can detect fine AE signal generated during fine machining process. In order to investigate the feasibility of the developed system, evaluation experiments were performed in the fine fixed-abrasive machining processes such as polishing and glass ferrule slicing. Experimental results show that the developed monitoring system possesses an excellent real-time monitoring capability at fine machining processes.
