  • This paper studied the AE(acoustic emission) characteristics of the laminated composite structures. The composite stiffened panels under the compressive loading emitted various AE signals when they buckled or changed the buckling modes. In addition, the failure initiated and propagation generated a lot of complex signals. From the continuous signal generation. we identified when the failures initiated and whether they propagated or not. The single lap joint of laminated plates under tensional load also generated AE signals when bonding region failed. The first failure occurrence and its propagation are monitored by generated AE signals. The characteristics of AE signals used in this analysis are cumulative hits, hit distribution, peak frequency of generated AE waveform and amplitude of signals. The analysis of AE signals shows that continuous increment of cumulative hits can be regarded as damage propagation and three dominant peak frequencies can correspond to typical failure modes in the laminated composites.

  • This study developed the health monitoring method of press process using the acoustic emission (AE) sensor and high-pass filter. Also, the AE parameters such as ring-down count and peak amplitude are used. Based on this AE signal, the AE parameters were acquired and was utilized to detect the crack of the specimen. Since the defect detection is difficult due to noise and low magnitude of signal, the signal noise and press operation frequency were checked through the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) and damped. High-pass Filtering data was applied to AE parameters to select effective parameters. By using this signal processing techniques, the proposed AE parameters could improve the performance of defect detection in the press process.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) signal was detected during charge and discharge of lithium ion battery to investigate relationships among cumulative count, discharge capacity, and microdamages. AE signal was received during accelerated charge/discharge cycle test of a coin-type commercial battery. A number of AE signals were successfully detected during charge and discharge, respectively. With increasing number of cycle, discharge capacity was decreased and AE cumulative count was observed to increase. Microstructural observation of the decomposed battery after cycle test revealed mechanical damages such as interface delamination and microcracking of the electrodes. These damages were attributed to sources of the detected AE signals. Based on a linear correlation between discharge capacity and cumulative count, feasibility of AE technique for evaluation of battery degradation was suggested.

  • Kaiser effects of thermo-acoustic emission (AE) from composite laminates under the repetitive thermal cyclic loads have been quantitatively analyzed in consideration of AE source mechanisms. The repetitive thermal load brought about a large reduction. i.e. an exponential decrease in AE total ringdown counts and AE amplitudes. It was thought that generation of thermo-AE during the first thermal cycle was not caused by crack propagation but by secondary microfracturing due to abrasive contact between crack surfaces. For the repetitive thermal cycles, a few number of weak thermo-AE events were generated due to some frictional sliding contact. Such behavior of thermo-AE showed different characteristics according to specimen kinds and the maximum temperature in the thermal load cycles.

  • To improve environmental control in various plants, signal characteristics of plants have been studied by a nondestructive technique. In this paper, the acoustic emission (AE) from plants was analyzed for water stress dependency. AE signals were taken from gymnosperm and angiosperm. AE sensor detected AE signals from the plant stem underneath the plant surface below the sensor. AE hit-event counts in daytime were more than those in night time, and it was found that the daily hit counts pattern was strongly affected by the water stress in the plant. frequency bands of AE signals from the angiosperm was different from those from the gymnosperm. Frequency bands of AE in outdoor condition were in accord with those in indoor having similar conditions.

  • Edge notched A16061-T6 aluminum was repaired with a GFRP composite patch as a function of the number of stacking, Damage progress of specimen for tension load has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE), AE energy rate, hit rate, amplitude, waveform and 1st peak frequency distribution were analyzed. Fracture processes were classified into Al cracking, Fiber breakage, Resin cracking and Delamination. Displacement of a specimen can be divided into Region I, II and ill according to acoustic emission characteristics. Region II where the patch itself was actually fractured was focused on to clarify the AE characteristics difference for the number of stacking.

  • In this study, an acoustic emission (AE) sensor was used for measuring the abrasive and molecular-scale phenomena in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). An AE sensor is a transducer that converts a mechanical wave into an electrical signal, and is capable of acquiring high-level frequencies from materials. Therefore, an AE sensor was installed in the CMP equipment and the signals were measured simultaneously during the polishing process. In this study, an AE monitoring system was developed for investigating the sensitivity of the AE signal to (a) the variations in the material properties of the pad, slurry, and wafer and (b) the change in conditions during the CMP process. This system was adapted to Oxide and Cu CMP processes. AE signal parameters including AE raw frequency, FFT, and amplitude were analyzed for understanding the abrasive and molecular-level phenomena in the CMP process. Finally, we verified that AE sensors with different bandwidths could function in complementary ways during CMP process monitoring.

  • AE technique was applied to the static structural test of the composite wing structure to evaluate the structural integrity and damage. During the test, strain and displacements measurement technique were used to figure out for static structural strength. AE parameter analysis and source location technique were used to evaluate the internal damage and find out damage source location. Design limit load test, the 1st and 2nd design ultimate load tests and fracture test were performed. Main AE source was detected by an sensor attached on skin near by front lug. Especially, at the 1st design ultimate test, strain and displacements results didn't show internal damage but AE signal presented a phenomenon that the internal damage was formed. At the fracture test, AE activities were very lively, and strain and displacements results showed a tendency that the load path was changed by severe damage. The internal damage initiation load and location were accurately evaluated during the static structural test using AE technique. It is certified from this paper that AE technique is useful technique for evaluation of internal damage at static structural strength test.

  • Damage Profess of CFRP laminates under monotonic tensile test was characterized by the correlation between Acoustic Emission(AE) and Ultrasonic Test(UT). The amplitude distribution of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the extent of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix crack, debonding, fiber pullout and fiber fracture as load is increased. In addtion, the characteristics of ultrasonic amplitude attenuation are useful lot analysis of the different type of fracture mechanism. Different orientation of carbon fiber reinforced plastic specimens were used to investigate the AE amplitude range and ultrasonic amplitude attenuation. Finally, loading-unloading tests were carried out to check Felicity effect. During the tests, ultrasonic amplitude attenuation was investigated at the same time and compared with AE parameters. The result showed that two parameters of both AE and UT could be effectively used for analysis of fracture mechanism in CFRP laminates.
