  • This paper develops a computational model for estimating the ride quality of a cabover type large-sized truck in a double wheel bumpy ride test. The computational model is developed using ADAMS. To verify the developed model, an actual vehicle double wheel bumpy ride test is performed. In the test, the vehicle maintains a straight course with a constant velocity such that the front two wheels are passed the bump at the same time. The bump has the height of 60mm, and the width of 550mm. In the test, four velocities are used. They are 10kph, 20kph, 30kph and 40kph. Since the large-sized truck's center of gravity location is high, and its weight is heavy, it is a quite severe test condition to perform the test with more than 30kph velocity. In the test, vertical accelerations on the floor of the cab are measured. The measured accelerations are compared to the simulation results. From the comparison, it is shown that the developed model can predict not only the measured acceleration's tendency but also peak accelerations quite well. In this paper, the validated model is utilized to compare the ride quality between a vehicle with a multi-leaf spring and a vehicle with a tapered leaf spring in the front suspension system in a double bumpy ride test.

  • Since the demand for new military vehicle to fulfill the necessary conditions such as multi-purpose, high-mobility, and survivability has raised continuously from the army, the prototype of a Korean light tactical vehicle was developed to meet these requirements using our own technology. In particular, the new tactical vehicle was equipped with a double wishbone independent suspension to improve ride and handling and maximize off-road driving performance. In this paper, a comprehensive virtual durability process to evaluate the service life of the prototype is presented. A reliability of the trimmed body model based on CATIA data was verified by comparison result between mode analysis and modal test. The dynamic model was constructed using ADAMS/Car, and then the weight distribution and lateral slope driving performance of it were compared with the results of static weight and lateral slope tests. The validity of the VTL(Virtual Test Lab) was checked with test results from the 3-inch spaced impact road. The durability performances of trimmed body and suspension components were evaluated through MSM(Modal Superposition Method) fatigue analysis. It is shown that the virtual durability process could be a helpful tool to find out the weak areas and improve their structures in developing new military vehicle.

  • It would be very useful if the dynamic response of a vehicle over rough ground could be predicted at the early design stage. This became more promising with the recent progress in computer hardware and software technologies. In this study, a model of a passenger car has been developed for the analysis of its dynamic response. This model can be easily used for the other passenger cars with little modification. This passenger car was modeled to be composed of lumped masses, rigid bodies, and the suspension systems with nonlinear properties. Even though a commercial dynamic simulation program, ADAMS, was used in this study, the developed model is valid for any other simulation program. Finally, the validity of the developed model and the analysis result was verified by an experiment.

  • This study is about roll characteristics evaluation to show the advantage of using MR(magneto-rheological) dampers for steering of a SUV(sports utility vehicle). Roll characteristics is very important to observe the roll-propensity of the SUV. ADAMS/Car program was used to simulate the basic steering motion, using 63 D.O.F. vehicle model. Sky-Hook and Ground-Hook control algorithms were used as a semi-active suspension system controller. The roll characteristics from the steering motion were compared between the simulation results from the semi-active suspension system and the passive suspension system.

  • This study concerned on the critical speed due to hunting and snake motion train to ensure the stability. First, the critical speed was calculated by using a numerical model, and calculated the critical speed of the vehicle through the simulation with the use of ADAMS/RAII. Also, the snake motion was confirmed through a modal analysis and running simulation. The calculated results, show that the rail irregularity becomes the influential factors of the stability since it is the direct source of excitation of the vehicle.

  • The SUV has a risk of rollover because of the highness of center of mass. In this paper the roll-behavior of a SUV in turning motion is analyzed. Dynamic model of the vehicle on the slope is developed and simulation is carried out using the software ADAMS/Car. The results show that the relational expression between the ground force acting on the tire and the roll motion is well established. It is also identified that the driving state of the vehicle becomes unstable at the lower or upper position of the slope.

  • This study deals with the analysis of the effectiveness of a safer belt in frontal crash. ATB, Articulated Total Body, program is used as a dynamics solver of the occupant model. ATB is a public code, however, the program is somewhat cumbersome to use due to lack of sufficient user interface. A preprocessor and a postprocessor are, therefore, developed for a user friendly graphic interface in Windows environment. Dialog boxes are used for an interface with GEBOD, Generator of Body Data, for human anthropometry and with ADAMS for vehicle dynamics. It is found through three test simulations that simulated results are in good agreement with those obtained by ATB. The effect of the initial slack of safety belt is investigated for frontal crash using the developed program.

  • A momentum backpropagation neural network is prepared to carry out real-time dynamics simulations of a passenger car. A full-car model of fifteen degrees of freedom was constructed for vehicle dynamics analysis. Human body dynamics analysis was performed for a male driver(50 percentile Korean adult) restrained by a three point seatbelt system. The trained data using the neural network were obtained using a dynamic solver, ADAMS . The neural network were formed based on the dynamics of the simulator. The optimized hidden layer was obtained by selecting the optimal number of hidden layers. The driving scenario including bump passing and lane changing has been used for the estimation of the proposed neural network. A comparison between the trained data and neural network outputs is found to be satisfactory to show the applicability of the suggested approach.

  • The development of railway vehicle and bogie involves the proper selection of design parameters not only to achieve high speed but also to reduce the vibration of the train. In this study an analytical model of a high speed freight car is developed to find the critical speed. The high speed freight car can generate the snake motion of the lateral and yawing motion of the car body, the bogie, and the wheelset. Numerical analysis for the nonlinear equation motions with 17 degrees of freedom showed the running stability and critical speed due to the snake motion. Also, the vibration modes of tile high speed freight car was calculated using ADAMS RAIL, which showed that the critical speed have the yawing modes of the car body and the bogie. Finally, this paper shows that the snake motion of the vehicle can be controlled with the modifications of the design parameters.

  • In this paper, the payload condition is considered and computer simulation is carried out to analyze the dynamic behavior of the middle-sized truck under the condition with different weight and location. The computer model for the truck is established and ADAMS/Car is employed to simulate the truck vehicle. A single lane change and bump-pass simulation are performed to evaluate the performance according to the weight and the position of it. Effects of the location and weight of commercial vehicle are analyzed. According to the simulation results, the front deck is preferred as the load location.
