This research was prompted by the paucity of specific code provisions regarding the design of short columns for shear. The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether the use of the normal shear design procedure of various codes may or may not be applied to reliably calculate the shear strength of short columns. Provisions of the codes American ACI 318M-08, Canadian CSA A23.3-04, Japanese AIJ Guidelines, New Zealand NZS 3101, European EN 1998 (EC8) parts 1 and 3, combined with EN 1992-1-1 (EC2), and draft fib Model Code 2010, as well as a strut-and-tie model are applied on short columns tested under cyclic loading that failed in shear. Actual shear resistances are compared to predictions, and the resulting shortcomings of the codes are identified. EN1998-3 appears to be the only code among those considered that may be reliably applied to estimate the shear resistance of short columns. Further, the proposed strut-and tie model can be a useful tool for the detailed design and assessment of short columns.

Optimum cost design of a simply supported reinforced concrete beam is presented in this paper. In the formulation of the optimum design problem, the height and width of the beam, and reinforcement steel area are treated as design variables. The design constraints are implemented according to ACI 318-08 and studies in the literature. The objective function is taken as the cost of unit length of the beam consisting the cost of concrete, steel and shuttering. The solution of the design problem is obtained using the artificial bee colony algorithm which is one of the recent additions to metaheuristic techniques. The artificial bee colony algorithm is imitated the foraging behaviors of bee swarms. In application of this algorithm to the constraint problem, Deb's constraint handling method is used. Obtained results showed that the optimum value of numerical example is nearly same with the existing values in the literature.
The effect of the maximum aggregate size and substitution rate of natural sand on the mechanical properties of concrete is evaluated using 15 lightweight aggregate concrete mixes. For mechanical properties of concrete, compressive strength increase with respect to age, tensile resistance, elastic modulus, rupture modulus, and stress-strain relationship were measured. The experimental data were compared with the design equations specified in ACI 318-08, EC2, and/or CEB-FIP code provisions and empirical equations proposed by Slate et al., Yang et al., and Wang et al. The test results showed that compressive strength of lightweight concrete decreased with increase in maximum aggregate size and amount of lightweight fine aggregates. The parameters to predict the compressive strength development could be empirically formulated as a function of specific gravity of coarse aggregates and substitution rate of natural sand. The measured rupture modulus and tensile strength of concrete were commonly less than the prediction values obtained from code provisions or empirical equations, which can be attributed to the tensile resistance of lightweight aggregate concrete being significantly affected by its density as well as compressive strength.
In this study, ultimate strengths of 51 continuous reinforced concrete deep beams were evaluated by the ACI 318M-08's strut-tie model approach implemented with the presented indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the companion paper. The ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams were also estimated by the shear equations derived based on experimental results, conventional design codes based on experimental and theoretical shear strength models, and current strut-tie model design codes. The validity of the presented strut-tie model and load distribution ratio was examined through the comparison of the strength analysis results classified according to the primary design variables of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and concrete compressive strength. The present study results of ultimate strengths obtained using the indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio of the continuous deep beams agree fairly well with those obtained using other approaches. In addition, the present approach reflected the effect of the primary design variables on the ultimate strengths of the continuous deep beams consistently and accurately. Therefore, the present study will help structural designers to conduct rational and practical strut-tie model designs of continuous deep beams.
The present investigation evaluates the flexural behavior of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams under two-point symmetrical concentrated loads according to the variation of the partial prestressing ratio and the effective prestress of prestressing strands. The designed compressive strength of the lightweight concrete with a dry density of 1,770 $kg/m^3$ was 35 MPa. The deformed bar with a yield strength of 383 MPa and three-wire mono-strands with tensile strength of 2,040 MPa were used for longitudinal tensile reinforcement and prestressing steel reinforcement, respectively. According to the test results, the flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams increased with the increase of the partial prestressing ratio and was marginally influenced by the effective prestress of strands. With the same reinforcing index, the normalized flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams was similar to that of pre-tensioned normal-weight concrete beams tested by Harajli and Naaman and Bennett. On the other hand, the displacement ductility ratio of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams increased with the decrease of the partial prestressing ratio and with the increase of the effective prestress of strands. The load-displacement relationship of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beam specimens can be suitably predicted by the developed non-linear two-dimensional analysis procedure. In addition, the flexural cracking moment and flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams can be conservatively evaluated using the elasticity theorem and the approach specified in ACI 318-08, respectively.
Design provisions for the development length of headed bars in ACI 318-08 include concrete compressive strength and yield strength of headed bars as design parameters but do not consider the effects of transvers reinforcement. In addition, they have very strict limitation for clear spacing and material strengths because these provisions were developed based on limited tests. In this study, splice tests using SD600 headed bars with $2d_b$ clear spacing and transverse reinforcement were conducted. Test results show that unconfined specimens failed due to prying action and bottom cover concrete prematurely spalled. The contribution of head bearing on the anchorage strength is only 15% on average implying that unconfined specimens failed before the head bearing was not sufficiently developed. Confined specimens with stirrups placed along whole splice length have enhanced strengths in bearing as well as bond because the stirrups prevented prying action and improved bond capacity. Bond failure occurred in locally confined specimens where stirrups were placed only at the ends of splice length. The stirrups at ends of splice lengths can prevent prying action but the bond capacity did not increase. From regression analysis of test results, an equation to predict anchorage strength of headed bars was developed. The proposed equation consists of bond and bearing contributions and includes transverse reinforcement index. The average ratio of tests to predictions is 1.0 with coefficient of variation of 6%.
Post-earthquake fire (PEF) can lead to a rapid collapse of buildings damaged partially as a result of prior earthquake. Almost all standards and codes for the design of structures against earthquake ignore the risk of PEF, and thus buildings designed using those codes could be too weak when subjected to a fire after an earthquake. An investigation based on sequential analysis inspired by FEMA356 is performed here on the Immediate Occupancy, Life Safety and Collapse Prevention performance levels of structures, designed to the ACI 318-08 code, after they are subjected to an earthquake level with PGA of 0.35g. This investigation is followed by a fire analysis of the damaged structures, examining the time taken for the damaged structures to collapse. As a point of reference, a fire analysis is also performed for undamaged structures and before the occurrence of earthquake. The results indicate that the vulnerability of structures increases dramatically when a previously damaged structure is exposed to PEF. The results also show that the damaging effects of post-earthquake fire are exacerbated when initiated from the second and third floor. Whilst the investigation is made for a certain class of structures (conventional buildings, intermediate reinforced structure, 3 stories), the results confirm the need for the incorporation of post-earthquake fire into the process of analysis and design, and provides some quantitative measures on the level of associated effects.
Two new predictive design methods are presented in this study. The first is a hybrid method, called neuro-fuzzy, based on neural networks with fuzzy learning. A total of 280 experimental datasets obtained from the literature concerning concentric punching shear tests of reinforced concrete slab-column connections without shear reinforcement were used to test the model (194 for experimentation and 86 for validation) and were endorsed by statistical validation criteria. The punching shear strength predicted by the neuro-fuzzy model was compared with those predicted by current models of punching shear, widely used in the design practice, such as ACI 318-08, SIA262 and CBA93. The neuro-fuzzy model showed high predictive accuracy of resistance to punching according to all of the relevant codes. A second, more user-friendly design method is presented based on a predictive linear regression model that supports all the geometric and material parameters involved in predicting punching shear. Despite its simplicity, this formulation showed accuracy equivalent to that of the neuro-fuzzy model.

With the emergence of ultra-high strength of concrete, the compression lap splice has become an important area of interest. According to ACI 318-08, a compression splice can be longer than a tension splice when high-strength concrete is used. By reevaluating the test results of compression splices and performing regression analysis, a simplified design equation for splice length in compression was developed based on the basic form of design equations for development/splice lengths of deformed bars and hooks in tension. A simple linear relation between $l_s/d_b$ and $f_{sc}\sqrt{f'_c}$ was assumed, and yields good values for the correlation coefficient and the mean and the COV (coefficient of variation) of the ratios of tests to predictions of splice strengths in compression. By including the 5% fractile coefficient of 0.83, a design equation for splice length in compression was developed. The splice length calculated using the proposed equation has a reliability that is equivalent to other provisions for reinforcing bars.
