  • A benzene synthesizer was manufactured and has been used for the treatment of the various samples such as wood, charcoal, shell and soil for radiocarbon dating using liquid scintillation counter. The experimental conditions were optimized in each successive step of the synthesis of carbon dioxide, acetylene and the final product of benzene. Fifteen hours operation of the benzene synthesizer leads to product yields consistently in excess of 85% based on the content of calcium carbonate for the organic samples. Purity of the synthesized benzene was measured to be more than 99.9% by GC/MS.

  • Carbon nanotubes were synthesized at various conditions using Ni-catalytic thermal chemical vapor deposition method and their characteristic properties were investigated by SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy. Carbon nanotubes were formed on very fine Ni-catalytic particles. The carbon nanotubes synthesized by thermal decomposition of acetylene at $700^{\circ}C$ had a coiled shape, while those synthesized at $850^{\circ}C$ showed a curved and Y-shape having a bamboo-like morphology. It was found that the carbon nanotube was also made on the fine Ni-catalytic particles formed on the surface of 100~400nm sized large ones after pretreatment with $NH_3$.ber composites show the high dielectric constant and large conduction loss which is increased with anisotropy of fiber arrangement. It is, therefore, proposed that the glass and carbon fiber composites can be used as the impedance transformer (surface layer) and microwave reflector, respectively. By inserting the foam core or honeycomb core (which can be treated as an air layer) between glass and carbon fiber composites, microwave absorption above 10 dB (90% absorbance) in 4-12 GHz can be obtained. The proposed fiber composites laminates with sandwitch structure have high potential as lightweight and high strength microwave absorbers.

  • Vertically well aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes were grown on nickel coated different substrates by plasma enhanced hot filament chemical vapor deposition at low temperatures below 650$^{\circ}C$. Acetylene and ammonia gas were used as the carbon source and a catalyst. The surface roughness of nickel layer increased as NH3 etching time increased. The diameters of the nanotubes decreased and the density of nanotubes increased as NH3 etching time increased. diameter of nanotube was 30 to 70 nm. Nickel cap was observed on the top of the grown nanotube and very thin carbon amorphous layer was fonde on the nickel cap.

  • New synthesis and electroanthennogram (EAG) responses of the pheromones of the diamond back moth Plutella xylostella L. are described. Lithium dianion of propargyl alcohol was alkylated with 1-bromononane to give 2-dodecyn-1-ol, which was converted to 11-dodecyn-1-ol by acetylene-zipper reaction. Dianion of 11-dodecyn-1-ol was alkylated with 1-bromobutane to provide 11-hexadecyn-1-ol, which was in turn reduced over Pd/BaSO4 to afford (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol (3). (Z)-11-Hexadecen-1-ol was oxidized and acetylated to (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-al (1) and (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-yl acetate (2), respectively. The electroantennogram (EAG) responses of the diamond back moth to the pheromone compouds thus synthesized were measured.

  • Two different types of graphite, such as flake graphite (FG) and spherical graphite (SG), were used as anode materials for a lithium-ion secondary battery in order to investigate their electrochemical performance. The FG particles were prepared by pulverizing natural graphite with a planetary mill. The SG particles were treated by immersing them in acid solutions or mixing them with various carbon additives. With a longer milling time, the particle size of the FG decreased. Since smaller particles allow more exposure of the edge planes toward the electrolyte, it could be possible for the FG anodes with longer milling time to deliver high reversible capacity; however, their initial efficiency was found to have decreased. The initial efficiency of SG anodes with acid treatments was about 90%, showing an over 20% higher value than that of FG anodes. With acid treatment, the discharge rate capability and the initial efficiency improved slightly. The electrochemical properties of the SG anodes improved slightly with carbon additives such as acetylene black (AB), Super P, Ketjen black, and carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the cyclability was much improved due to the effect of the conductive bridge made by carbon additives such as AB and Super P.

  • In this paper, semiconducting shield specimens for a DC cable is fabricated and characterized by measurement of volume resistance, tensile strength, and the coefficient of expansion to show the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the semiconducting shield. Due to the PTC phenomenon, the volume resistance at $25^{\circ}C$ increases rapidly in comparison to the volume resistance at $90^{\circ}C$. Since the compounding ratio of carbon black is low, the tensile strength and density become lower and the coefficient of expansion is increased. As the general specification of the tensile strength and density is $0.8kgf/mm^2$ and 150%, respectively, the fabricated specimen in this paper has excellent mechanical characteristic.

  • In this work, the optimal process has been designed by $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array and analysis of variance(ANOVA) for thermal-sprayed Ni-based hard coating. Ni-based hard coatings were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate. Then, the hardness test and observation of microstructure of the coatings were performed. The results of hardness test were analyzed by ANOVA. The ANOVA results demonstrated that the acetylene gas flow had the greatest effect on hardness of the coatings. The oxygen gas flow was found to have a neglecting effect. From these results, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters could be predicted. The calculated hardness of the coatings by ANOVA was found to lie close to that of confirmation experimental result. Thus, it was considered that design of experiments design using orthogonal array and ANOVA was useful to determine optimal process of thermal-sprayed Ni-based hard coating.

  • The synthetic method of pyrazole was performed by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with dipolarophile instead of the reaction between diazomethane and acetylene. The cycloaddition mechanism and reactivity of 3-phenyloxadiazole derivatives with dipolarophiles was investigated. In order to investigate the mechanism and reactivity of this cycloaddition, the effect of substituents having various kinds of electron withdrawing or releasing groups were examinated. Considering the effect of substituents, an electron withdrawing group attached at the 4-carbon position in 3-phenyloxadiazole derivatives decrease the reaction rate because of the lack of electron density in oxadiazole ring. The reaction rate of 3-phenyloxadiazole derivatives with dipolarophiles were more conveniently measured using UV than using a volumetric analysis which was used before. From the result of this study, it was that the cycloaddition was found to be a first-order reaction depending upon the concentration of 3-phenyloxadiazole only.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted considerable attention as possible routes to device miniaturization due to their excellent mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. These properties show great potential for devices such as field emission displays, CNT based transistors, and bio-sensors. The metals such as nickel, cobalt, gold, iron, platinum, and palladium are used as the catalysts for the CNT growth. In this study, diamond-like carbon (DLC) was used for CNT growth as a nonmetallic catalyst layer. DLC films were deposited by a radio frequency (RF) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method with a mixture of methane and hydrogen gases. CNTs were synthesized by a hot filament plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (HF-PECVD) method with ammonia (NH3) as a pretreatment gas and acetylene (C2H2) as a carbon source gas. The grown CNTs and the pretreated DLC filmswere observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) measurement, and the structure of the grown CNTs was analyzed by high resolution transmission scanning electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Also, using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) measurement, we confirmed that only the carbon component remained on the substrate.
