This paper addresses the efficient improvement of the Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) by the proper voltage excitation. In the case of loads with large operational motor-speed differences such as washing machine, an SRM system driven by a constant DC-link voltage is not useful for improving the efficiency. To reduce the effect of the excess DC-link voltage, AC-DC control converter that uses a silicon controlled rectifier instead of diode rectifier is employed in the SRM driver system. AC-DC control converter supplies a proper link voltage for low-speed operation. The experimental results demonstrated that the efficiency of the system was improved at low speeds.

This paper proposes a modeling and controller design method of Flywheel Energy Storage System(FESS) for solving the unstable operation problem in hybrid generation system with wind turbine and diesel generator applied in island area. FESS is considered as a permanent magnetic synchronous machine connected to flywheel because of its efficiency. The controller of FESS is composed of AC/DC/AC back-to-back converter. The AC/DC converter is designed to charge/discharge according to the frequency variation and the DC/AC converter to operate to keep the DC bus voltage constant. The proposed modeling and controller design method of FESS was applied to hybrid generation system with wind turbine and diesel generator. The unstable operation problem owing to wind variations was solved through simulation results.

The operational cost for maintaining the superconductivity of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables needs to be reduced for feasible operation. It depends on factors such as AC loss and heat transfer from the outside. Effective operation requires design optimization and suitable operational conditions. Generally, it is known that critical currents increase and AC losses decrease as the operational temperature of liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is lowered. However, the cryo-cooler consumes more power to lower the temperature. To determine the effective operational temperature of the HTS cable while considering the critical current and AC loss, critical currents of the HTS cable conductor were measured under various temperature conditions using sub-cooled $LN_2$ by Stirling cryo-cooler. Next, AC losses were measured under the same conditions and their variations were analyzed. We used the results to select suitable operating conditions while considering the cryo-cooler's power consumption. We then recommended the effective operating temperature for the HTS cable system installed in an actual power grid in KEPCO's 154/22.9 kV transformer substation.

This study proposes a method for improving the overmodulation performance of a three-phase inverter to obtain an enhanced output torque for the AC motors. In the inverter-fed AC motor drives, the output torque of the motor can be enhanced by utilizing the overmodulation region as well as the linear modulation regions of the inverter. The overmodulation method is used for this overmodulation operation of the inverter. However, the voltage gain, the ratio of the output voltage of the inverter to the reference voltage achieved by the conventional overmodulation methods becomes nonlinearly smaller than unity. Therefore, the effect of improving the output torque of the AC motors is insignificant even when the overmodulation region is utilized. In this study, we propose a method that improves the overmodulation performance of the inverter by compensating the limited amount of the reference voltage in the overmodulation operation to enhance the output torque of the AC motors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through the simulations and experiments with an 800 W permanent magnet synchronous motor.

This paper presents the modeling for islanded hybrid AC/DC microgrid and the verification of the proposed supervisory controller for energy management for this microgrid. The supervisory controller allows the microgrid system to operate in different power flows through the proposed control algorithm, it has several roles in the management of the energy flow between the different components of the microgrid for reliable operation. The proposed microgrid has both essential objectives such as the maximum use of renewable energies resources and the reduction of multiple conversion processes in an individual AC or DC microgrids. The microgrid system considered for this study has a solar photovoltaic (PV), a wind turbine (WT), a battery (BT), and a AC/DC loads. A small islanded hybrid AC/DC microgrid has been modeled and simulated using the MATLAB-Simulink. The simulation results show that the system can maintain stable operation under the proposed supervisory controller when the microgrid is switched from one operating mode of energy flow to another.

A novel mode of parallel operation of a modular 3-phase AC-DC flyback converter for power factor correction along with tight regulation was recently analyzed and presented. The advantage of the proposed converter does not require expensive high voltage and high current devices that are normally needed in popular boost type 3-phase converter. In this paper tile detailed small signal analysis of the modular 3-phase AC-DC flyback converter is provided for control purpose and also experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analysis.
This paper proposes the comparison results of various optimal power flow algorithms (OPF) to calculate the locational marginal prices (LMP) of the unreduced full scale Korean transmission system. Five different types of optimal power flow models are employed: Full AC OPF, Cubic AC OPF, Quadratic AC OPF, Linear AC OPF and DC OPF. As the results, full AC OPF and cubic AC OPF model provides LMP calculation results very similar to each other while the calculation time of cubic AC OPF model is faster than that of the Full AC OPF. Other simplified OPF models, quadratic AC OPF, linear AC OPF and DC OPF offer erroneous results even though the calculation times are much faster than the Full AC OPF and the Cubic AC OPF. Given the condition that the OPF models sometimes fail to find the optimal solution due to the severe complexity of the Korean transmission power system, the Full AC OPF should be used as the primary OPF model while the Cubic AC OPF can be a promising backup OPF model for the LMP calculations and/or real-time operation.
200-MW pulse modulators(total 11units) for the PLS linac employ the SCR phase control circuit. It controls 3-phase AC line voltage for the high-voltage DC power supply (DCPS, maximum of 25kVDC, 4.2A) which charges the pulse forming network(PFN). The PFN delivers 400kV, 500A, ESW $7.5{\mu}s$ pulse power to the 80-MW klystron amplifier tube. The SCR regulates 3-phase AC power and feeds to the high voltage transformer. Two different types of the transformer configurations namely ${\Delta}-{\Delta}$ and ${\Delta}-Y$, are alternatively installed to 11 modulator units for the suppression of harmonic noises. RC filters and reactors are also installed. Currently, approximately 110-kW of average AC power per unit is consumed at the normal operation level of the modulator with 30pps. This paper presents the operational characteristics of the high power pulse modulator, especially the experimental results of the AC line harmonic components generated by the operation of the high power pulse modulator to suppress the switching noises from the SCR and rectifying diode arrays.

This paper proposes that each converter supplies the power using the proposed droop control for the parallel operation of the converters. The proposed method is easy to increase the power as parallel system in DC distribution. By improving conventional droop-control method used in AC grid newly, a droop controller is designed to apply droop control in DC grid. And the control method of the proposed droop controller is explained particularly. In this paper, by applying the proposed control method to DC distribution system, propriety is verified through the simulation and the experiment.
Internet Data Centers (IDCs), which are essential facilities in the modern IT industry, typically have scores of MW of concentrated electric loads. The provision of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is necessary for the power feed system of IDCs owing to the need for stable power. Thus, conventional IDC AC power feed systems have three cascaded power conversion stages, (AC-DC), (DC-AC), and (AC-DC), resulting in a very low conversion efficiency. In comparison, DC power feed systems require only a single power conversion stage (AC-DC) to supply AC main power to DC server loads, resulting in comparatively high conversion efficiency and reliability [4-11]. This paper compares the efficiencies of a 220V AC power feed system with those of a 300V DC power feed system under equal load conditions, as established by the Mok-Dong IDC of Korea Telecom Co. Ltd. (KT). Experimental results show that the total operation efficiency of the 300V DC power feed system is approximately 15% higher than that of the 220V AC power feed system.
