  • This paper presents a new class of magnetic microsensors based on the Hall effect in AC microplasma. In the theoretical study, we develop a simple model of the plasma Hall sensor and express the plasma Hall voltage as a function of magnetic field, plasma discharge field, pressure, and electrode geometry. On this basis, we have designed and fabricated magnetic microsensors using AC neon plasma. In the experiment, we have measured the Hall voltage output of the plasma microsensors for varying five different conditions, including the frequency and the magnitude of magnetic field, the frequency and the magnitude of plasma discharge voltage, and the neon pressure. The fabricated magnetic microsensors show a magnetic field sensitivity of 8.87${\pm}$0.18㎷/G with 4.48% nonlinearity.

  • This study uses neon and xenon gas mixture discharges to determine the effects of the neon plasma emission on the characteristics of visible emission from the stimulation of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers in a surface-type alternate current plasma display panel(AC PDP). With a mixture of less than 2% xenon to neon, it is found that the luminance changes in the visible emission of the phosphor layers are similar to those of the neon plasma emission. In the range of xenon mix ratio from 2 to 5%, the luminance of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers decreases with a decrease in the neon plasma emission intensity. However, with a mixture of above 5% xenon to neon, the luminance of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers increases regardless of a decrease in the neon plasma emission intensity. Furthermore, the color purity of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers improve as the neon plasma emission intensity decreases. Accordingly, it is concluded that the optical properties of the phosphor layers, including color purity and luminance, depend on the neon plasma discharge emission as well as the visible emission from the stimulation of the phosphor layers.

  • This study uses neon, xenon, and helium gas mixture microdischarge to determine the effects of priming particles on the neon emission characteristics in an alternate current plasma display panel (AC PDP). The infrared (823 nm) and neon emission (585 nm) intensities are measured and compared in the blue cells in the case of new discharge with priming particles or conventional discharge without priming particles, respectively. It is found that the priming particles can produce a plasma discharge effectively even under the weak electric field condition, thereby resulting in reducing the neon emission intensity remarkably without sacrificing the IR emission intensity. As a result, it is found that the Ne emission intensity is reduced by about 46.4 % but the blue visible emission intensity is increased by about 15.2 % when compared with the conventional discharge without priming particles.

  • The paper investigates electrical discharge properties in neon gas mixed with xenon. The breakdown temperature T$\sub$b/ and voltage V$\sub$b/ are obtained in terms of the gas mixture ratio X. It is shown that the breakdown voltage decreases, reaches the minimum value at X=0.02 and then increases again, as the mixture ratio X increases from zero to unity. Therefore, mixing the neon gas with a few percent of xenon is the most beneficial to reduce the breakdown voltage. Plasma density at breakdown in neon gas mixed with xenon is described in terms of the gas mixture ratio. The optimum value of mixture ratio for highest plasma density is found to be Xm=0.03. A preliminary experiment of AC-PDP is carried out for neon gas mixed with a few percent of xenon to verify some of the theoretical models. The experimental data agree qualitatively well with theoretical predictions.

  • The Ultra Violet(UV) emission characteristics of Neon + Nitrogen gas-mixture discharge was investigated in AC plasma display panel. The firing voltage of Ne+$N_2$ gas-mixture discharge increased with increasing nitrogen concentration. The UV intensity emitted from the gas discharge also increased with increasing nitrogen concentration. The UV efficiency increase with increasing $N_2$ partial pressure at low $N_2$ concentration, and then UV efficiency is saturated at high $N_2$ concentration.

  • In this paper, we analyze on the discharge characteristics through 1-D simulations in an at plasma display panel discharge cell. The model is based on a Poisson' equation, continuity and drift-diffusion equation. Results are presented in a 95% neon, 5% xenon gas mixture, for a gap length of 100us and a gas pressure of 400Torr at ambient temperature. Results for other gap length are also discussed. As a result, an increase of the gap cause increase of luminous efficiency but with larger sustaining voltage.

  • The plasma ion density in AC-PDP has shown to be increased from $5.6{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$ to $9.0{\times}10^{11)cm^{-3}$ as the Xe mixture ratio to neon increase from 1 % to 10 %, respectively, at fixed pressure of 400 Torr, by using the micro-Langmuir probe. It is noted that the plasma ion density is density increases as the gas pressure increases in this experiment. The electron temperature decreases from 2.3 to 1.2 eV as the Xe mole fraction increases from 1 % to 10 % at fixed pressure of 400 Torr, which is measured by the micro Langmuir probe and high-speed ICCD camera in this experiment. It is noted that the electron temperature decreases as the gas pressure increases from 150 to 400 Torr in this experiment. It is also observed that the exited Xe atom density and the plasma ion density are in strong correlation sharp between each other in this experiment. It is noted that $5.2{\times}10^{12}cm^{-3}$ in the $1s_5$ metastable state and $1.2{\times}10^{12}cm^{-3}$ in the $1s_4$ resonance state for the PDP cell with gap of 50 um distances under the fixed gas pressure of 400 Torr and Xe content ratio of 10 %.
