Effects of oropharyngeal taste stimuli in the restoration of the fasting-induced activation of the HPA axis in rats (백서에서 금식으로 인한 스트레스 대응축 활성화의 회복조절기전에서 구강인두로부터 입수되는 다양한 맛 자극의 효과)

  • Introduction: This study examined the regulatory mechanism underlying the meal-induced changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal gland (HPA) axis activity. Materials and Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (250-300 g) were hired for two different experiments as follows; 1) rats received either 8% sucrose or 0.2% saccharin ad libitum after 48 h of food deprivation with the gastric fistula closed (real feeding) or opened (sham feeding). 2). rats received 5 ml of intra-oral infusion with 0.2% saccharin or distilled water after 48 h of food deprivation. One hour after food access, all rats were sacrificed by a transcardiac perfusion with 4% paraformaldehyde. The brains were processed for c-Fos immunohistochemistry and the cardiac blood was collected for the plasma corticosterone assay. Results: Real feedings with sucrose or saccharin and sham feeding saccharin but not sucrose, following food deprivation decreased the plasma corticosterone level. c-Fos expression in the nucleus tractus of solitarius (NTS) of the fasted rats was increased by the consumption of sucrose but not saccharin, regardless of the feeding method. On the other hand, the consumption of sucrose or saccharin with real feeding but not the sham, induced c-Fos expression in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the fasted rats. The intra-oral infusion with saccharin or water decreased the plasma corticosterone level of the fasted rats. Intra-oral water infusion increased c-Fos expression in both the PVN and NTS, but saccharin only in the NTS in the fasted rats. Conclusion: Neither restoration of the fasting-induced elevation of plasma corticosterone nor the activation of neurons in the PVN and NTS after refeeding requires the palatability of food or the post-ingestive satiety and caloric load. In addition, neuronal activation in the hypothalamic PVN may not be an implication in the restoration of the fasting-induced elevation of the plasma corticosterone by oropharyngeal stimuli of palatable food.

Effect of Black Pepper on the Composition of Serum and Liver in the Rat (호초(胡椒)가 백서(白鼠)의 혈청(血淸) 및 간장성분(肝臟成分)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of black pepper (BP) added to food on a living body and to determine the growth rate, digestibility, weight of organs, composition of blood and liver in the rat. Fifty-six male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain, weight $120{\pm}10g$, were divided into 4 groups and were fed ad libitum for 8 weeks. Experimental diets were divided into 4 groups. Each groups were separately added 0%, 0.5%, 2.0% and 5.0% of BP level. The results obtained are summarized as follows. The highest net weight of liver and heart generally increased according to increasing amount of BP and that of spleen and lung were not significantly different. Kidney weight was significantly higher in the group of containing 5.0% BP. Serum GOT and GPT were not significant, serum glucose was significantly lower in the group of containing 5.0% BP, and serum cholesterol was significantly higher in the group of containing 5.0% BP. Total serum protein decreased gradually as the amount of BP increased, but albumin and globulin were nor affect. Serum Na and K were not significant, but serum Ca and P were decreased as the amount of BP was increased. Liver crude lipid and crude protein were not affect. In fatty acid composition, arachidonic acid was significantly lower in the group of containing 5.0% BP.

  • An enterprise is a basic unit to constitute national economy and a unit of independent production economy to pursue profit based on separation between ownership of production means and labor. Even though price and quantity of production are decided by planned economy in order to survive in the mechanism of market economy, quantity of production and of demands can't be same at all because of consumers' different preferences. An enterprise uses audio-visual media like letters, pictures, and voice in order to grasp consumers' taste, to develop products and to advertise them. Advertising is communication that a company, a non-profit organization or an individual, that is shown in the message of an ad, makes through several media. It is time that a company should appeal its image, not only its products, to consumers as a salesman. Marketing strategy of company identity is to visualize a company's intentions, to formalize its motto, slogan or culture, to build up trust of products and the company in consumers, and then, to have the consumers forever. By the virtue of development of www in 1990s, the media has been expanded to online. Development of www has united the world into a network and the market has been changed to unlimited competition. This paper intends to define the concept and characteristics of web identity and investigates and analyzes how web sites of sports shoes express their identities. In addition, it analyzes influences of multinational companies' web identifies (in Korean version) and of local companies' web identities on local consumers. Through survey, it will analyze the effects of web identity and review its operation.

Relationship between Vitamin E and Polyunsaturated Fat - A comparative animal study emphasizing perilla seed oil as a fat constituent - (비타민 E와 불포화 지방과의 관계 - 들깨유(油)를 중심으로 한 동물의 비교 연구 -)

  • Perilla (frutescens) seed oil, which is widely used as a source of vegetable oil in Korea, contains a strikingly large amount (58.4% of total fatty acids) of polyunsaturated linolenic acid (18 : 3) which is one of the essential fatty acids. Our hypothesis was that vitamin E contained in this oil would not be enough to prevent peroxidation of this polyunsaturated oil. A comparative study was carried out using rats and chicks devided into seven groups with various diet combinations emphasizing fat sources for the period of four weeks. The level of fat in each diet was 15% and animals were fed ad libitum. Various diet combinations were as follows; perilla seed oil and sesame seed oil with and without vitamin E supplementation, tallow as a saturated fat source and perilla seed hull group (10% at the expense of carbohydrate). The fat constituents of control group were consisted of 50% vegetable oil and 50% animal fat. A few important findings are as follows: 1. Rats fed perilla seed oil lost their hair focally around the neck and suffered from a bad skin lesion at the same place. In chicks, yellow pigmentation both of feather and of skin was clearly observed only in groups fed perilla seed oil with or without vitamin E supplementation. The basis of biochemical mechanisms of this phenomena remains as an important research interest. 2. The mean value for hematocrit was significantly lower for the chicks fed perilla seed oil than for those fed control diet. This result seems to be attributable to the effect on the red cell membrane known as peroxidation-hemolysis of vitamin E deficiency. 3. The serum cholesterol level was higher for the rats fed perilla seed oil than for those fed control diet, whereas in chicks the group fed perilla seed oil showed lower value than the control group indicating that different animal species could vary in their responses to the same diet. 4. In pathological examinations, the sign of hepatic fibrosis was seen in the perilla seed hull group and it was noticeable that the level of hepatic RNA was significantly increased in the rat recovering from vitamin E deficiency. It is hoped that more detailed studies on perilla seed oil and hulls will soon be carried out in many aspects especially i) at various levels of fat in the diet, ii) in relation to dietary selenium level and iii) to find an optimum level of dietary essential fatty acids in terms of P/S ratio using various animal species. In the mean time, the public should be informed to preserve this particular oil with care to minimize fatty acid oxidation and should be discouraged from overconsuming this oil.   • In large-scale production of hydrogen, a PHE (Process Heat Exchanger) is a key component because the heat required to carry out the Sulfur-Iodine chemical reaction that yields hydrogen is transferred from a VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) by the PHE. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute established a helium gas loop for conducting performance test of components that are used in the VHTR. In this study, as a part of high-temperature structural-integrity evaluation of a designed PHE prototype that is scheduled to be tested in the helium gas loop, we carried out high-temperature structural-analysis modeling, thermal analysis, and thermal-expansion analysis for the designed PHE prototype. An appropriate constraint condition is proposed at the end of the in-flow and out-flow pipelines of the primary and secondary coolants and the proposed constraint condition will be applied to the design of the performance-test loop setup for the designed PHE prototype.

The development of a bluetooth based portable wireless EEG measurement device (블루투스 기반 휴대용 무선 EEG 측정시스템의 개발)

  • Since the interest of a brain science research is increased recently, various devices using brain waves have been developed in the field of brain training game, education application and brain computer interface. In this paper, we have developed a portable EEG measurement and a bluetooth based wireless transmission device measuring brain waves from the frontal lob simply and conveniently. The low brain signals about 10~100${\mu}V$ was amplified into several volts and low pass, high pass and notch filter were designed for eliminating unwanted noise and 60Hz power noise. Also, PIC24F192 microcontroller has been used to convert analog brain signal into digital signal and transmit the signal into personal computer wirelessly. The sampling rate of 1KHz and bluetooth based wireless transmission with 38,400bps were used. The LabVIEW programing was used to receive and monitor the brain signals. The power spectrum of commercial biopac MP100 and that of a developed EEG system was compared for performance verification after the simulation signals of sine waves of $1{\mu}V$, 0~200Hz was inputed and processed by FFT transformation. As a result of comparison, the developed system showed good performance because frequency response of a developed system was similar to that of a commercial biopac MP100 inside the range of 30Hz specially.

Comparison of growth performances with three different Korean native chickens for a twelve-week post hatch period

  • This study was conducted to compare the growth performances of three groups of commercial Korean native chickens (KNCs) including two strains of crossbreeds and H3 (Hanhyeop 3) from hatch to twelve weeks of age. (1A, 2A, and H3). A total of 468 one-day-old chicks were allocated in a completely randomized design with 15 replicates per treatment for the crossbreeds and 9 replicates per treatment for H3 (12 birds per cage). Commercial broiler diets (i.e., Week 0 - 5 crude protein [CP] 22.0%, metabolizable energy [ME] 3,025 kcal·kg-1; week 5 - 8 CP 20.0%, ME 3,100 kcal·kg-1; week 8 - 12 CP 19.0%, ME 3,150 kcal·kg-1) were provided according to the Korean Feeding Standard for Poultry on an ad-libitum basis with fresh clean water during the twelve-week period. Body weight gain and shank length (SL) were measured weekly until week 6 and bi-weekly during week 6 to 12. Compared to H3, the two crossbreed groups had a higher body weight (BW) on weeks 3 to 8; however, the bodyweight of H3 on week 10 was significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.05). Moreover, the average daily feed intake (ADFI) of H3 was higher than that of the two crossbreed groups from hatching to 84 days except for week 3, and H3 showed a lower average daily gain (ADG) on weeks 3 and 10 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, H3 had a higher feed conversion ratio compared to another crossbreed chicken on weeks 1 to 8 and the last week after hatching. Among all the groups, there was no significant difference for shank length during the experimental period.

Meat quality of pork loins from Hereford×Berkshire female and intact male pigs reared in an alternative production system

  • Objective: The objective of the present study was to investigate pork quality from Hereford${\times}$Berkshire female and intact male pigs reared outdoors in an alternative production system. Methods: Berkshire purebred sows were artificially inseminated, once in the fall and again in the spring of the following year, with semen from Hereford boars and managed free of antibiotics in an outdoor hoop structure until the last month of pregnancy, after which they were moved to a pasture-based unit of 0.8 hectares with individual lots with a farrowing hut, shade, and water ad libitum. Piglets were weaned at 4 weeks of age and housed in a deep-bedded hoop structure, grouped by sex. Animals were harvested at market weight of 125 kg, approximately 200 days of age. Hot carcass weight was collected at the time of the harvest. After 24 hours of refrigeration, carcass characteristics were measured. Longissimus dorsi samples collected from the right side loin. Loins were cut into 2.54-cm thick chops and were used to measure marbling score, color score, drip loss, and ultimate pH. Sensory panel tests were conducted as well at North Carolina State University. For pork characteristics and sensory panel data, trial and sex were included in the statistical model as fixed effects. Hot carcass weight was included in the model as a covariate for backfat thickness. Results: Neither the subjective nor the objective color scores displayed any differences between the boars and the gilts. No difference was found for pH and marbling score between trials or sexes. Gilts had a thicker backfat measurement at the last lumbar and a narrower longissimus muscle area measurement when compared to the boars. The only difference in the sensory characteristics was found between the trials for texture and moisture scores. Conclusion: Consumers were not able to detect boar taint under the condition of this study, which is that the intact males were reared outdoors. Additional trials would be necessary; however, based on the results of the present study, outdoor rearing can be suggested as a solution to the issue of boar taint.

Transformation of Dynamic Loads into Equivalent Static Load based on the Stress Constraint Conditions (응력 구속조건을 고려한 동하중의 등가정하중으로의 변환)

  • Due to the difficulty in considering dynamic load in the view point of a computer resource and computing time, it is common that external load is assumed as ideal static loads. However, structural analysis under static load cannot guarantee the safety of design of the structures under dynamic loadings. Recently, the systematic method to construct equivalent static load from the given dynamic load has been proposed. Previous study has calculated equivalent static load through the optimization procedure under displacement constraints. However, previously reported works to distribute equivalent static load were based on ad-hoc methods. Improper selection of equivalent static loading positions may results in unreliable prediction of structural design. The present study proposes the selection method of the proper locations of equivalent static loads to dynamically applied loads when we consider transient dynamic structural problems. Moreover, it is appropriate to take into account the stress constraint as well as displacement constraint condition for the safety design. But the previously reported studies of equivalent static load design methods considered only displacement constraint conditions but not stress constraint conditions. In the present study we consider not only displacement constraint but also stress constraint conditions. Through a few numerical examples, the efficiency and reliability of proposed scheme is verified by comparison of the equivalent stress between equivalent static loading and dynamic loading.

Colostrum Protein Isolate Increases Gut and Whole Body Growth and Plasma IGF-I in Neonatal Pigs

  • The growth rate of the young pig is generally much less than it's potential and may be constrained by endocrine status as well as nutrient intake. Growth factors are present in relatively high quantities in colostrum and play an important part in gut development. It is possible that supplementation of colostrum protein isolate may stimulate gut and whole body growth in the pig. Eight male and 8 female (Large Whitex${\times}$Landrace) piglets were weaned at 1 d of age after each pig had obtained colostrum from their dam, and were trained to consume one of two liquid diets. The two diets were based on either a colostrum protein isolate (n = 4 males and 4 females) or whey protein concentrate (n = 4 males and 4 females) and were formulated to contain equal levels of crude protein and amino acids. Pigs were fed their diets ad libitum for 28 days after which time 12 pigs were euthanised and various tissues and organs weighed. Pigs were bled for IGF-I analyses at 21 and 28 days of age. Daily gain was higher in pigs consuming the colostrum isolate (171 vs. 216 g/d, p = 0.010), particularly between 2 and 4 weeks of age (212 vs. 298 g/d, p = 0.010). Pigs tended to consume more of the liquid feed containing colostrum isolate (25.5 vs. 29.1 kg, p = 0.074) and gained more live weight per unit of liquid feed (0.203 vs. 0.223 g/g, p = 0.056). There were no effects of sex on growth performance. Pigs consuming the diet supplemented with colostrum isolate had higher (p<0.05) full gut weight (445 vs. 554 g, p = 0.026), empty gut weight (356 vs. 463 g, p = 0.008), stomach weight (42.2 vs. 54.4 g, p = 0.001), small intestine weight (222 vs. 275 g, p = 0.025) and large intestine weight (63.7 vs. 98.0 g, p = 0.005). Plasma IGF-I (99 vs. 150 ng/ml, p<0.001) and IGF-II (265 vs. 406 ng/ml, p<0.001) were higher in pigs fed colostrum isolate. Pigs consuming colostrum protein isolate ate more, grew faster and had higher plasma IGF-I concentrations than pigs consuming a diet with similar macronutrient content but devoid of growth factors.
