Rhizoctonia solani is one of the major pathogens that cause sheath blight disease in rice. Sheath blight is one of the most difficult diseases to control. Biological control (with the use of rhizobacteria) is one of the ways to control this disease. Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a rhizosphere bacterium that can be used to enhance plant growth. The composition of the rhizobacteria in organic and nonorganic soil is affected by the chemical characteristics of the soil - which influences plant physiology and root exudation patterns. This study aimed to obtain a species of rhizobacteria which shows PGPR activity, from organic and nonorganic rice fields and test their capability to suppress R. solani growth. Out of 23 isolates screened for PGPR activity, the following isolates showed high PGPR activity and were selected for in vitro antagonistic activity testing against R. solani: ISO6, ISO11, ISO15, ISN2, ISN3, and ISN7, The six isolates produced 43,42-75,23 ppm of IAA, possessed phosphorus solubilization capability, and chitinase-producing activity. ISO6 (54.88%) and ISN7 (83.33%) displayed high inhibition capacities against R. solani, in vitro. ISO6 and ISN7 inhibited the growth of R. solani lesions on rice leaves by 89% and 100% (without lesion), respectively, after 7 days of incubation. Analysis of their 16S rRNA sequences revealed that the ISO6 isolate was Citrobacter freundii and ISN7 isolate was Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Aster glehni Franchet et Schmidt is a compositae plant and has been known as a native specie in Ulleung Island, Korea. It is officially recognized as a regional specialty that grows only in this region. In 2014, brown and dark spots were observed on aster leaves in a forest research field, Jinju, Korea. A causal agent was isolated from the disease symptomatic leaves and identified as fungus Alternaria solani. Fungal morphological characteristics and molecular identification with internal transcribed spacer sequences were synchronized as A. solani. The isolated fungi reproduced the same disease symptoms when the fungus was artificially inoculated on healthy aster leaves. This is the first report that A. solani caused leaf blight disease in Aster glehni in Korea.
The monoxenic culture of the fungivorous nematode, Aphelenchus avenae, was applied for the control of soil-borne ginseng pathogens such as Fusarium solani and Rhizoctonia solani. Fungivorous nematode populations were measured in a field to examine relationships between the nematode populations and suppression of ginseng root diseases. Inoculation of A. avenae (5000 nematodes per petri-dish) reduced the colonization of the Fusarium mycelium on root discs of ginseng and carrot by 80.0% and 60.5%, respectively. A. avenae also significantly reduced the occurrence of damping-off of ginseng by R. solani pathogenic to ginseng, and no plant damage by the nematode was noted. In a 3-year-old ginseng field infested with Cylindrocarpon destructans, plant missing caused by root rot positively correlated to the density of potato rot nematode, Ditylenchus destructor, but it was reduced with the population of A. avenae, suggesting that A. avenae might inhibit the occurrence of ginseng root rot.

Damping-off symptoms were frequently observed on young plants of edible amaranth (Amaranthus mangostanus) grown in vinyl greenhouses by farmers located in Goyang and Yangpyeong in Korea during disease surveys carried out in 2019 and 2020. The incidence of the disease was 1-20%. A total of eight isolates of Rhizoctonia sp. were obtained from the stems of the diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-4, based on the morphological characteristics and anastomosis test. Three isolates of R. solani AG-4 were tested for pathogenicity on edible amaranth by artificial inoculation. All the tested isolates of R. solani AG-4 induced damping-off symptoms on the inoculated plants; these symptoms were similar to those observed on the vinyl greenhouse plants surveyed. This is the first report of R. solani AG-4 causing damping-off in edible amaranth.
A bacterial strain YB-70 which has powerful biocontrol activity against Fusarium solani causing plant root-rot resulting in considerable losses of many economical crops was isolated and selected from over 500 isolates from a ginseng rhizosphere in suppressive soil, and identified as a strain of Bacillus subtilis. In several biochemical and in vitro antibiosis tests on F. solani with culture filterates from B. subtilis YB-70, our data strongly indicated metabolites which mediated inhibition of the fungal growth were presumed to be heat-stable, micromolecular, and ethyl alcohol solutable antifungal substances. Suppression of root-rot by B. subtilis YB-70 was demonstrated in pot trials with eggplant (Solanum melongena L) seedlings. Treatment of the seedling with the bacterial suspension (1.7~1.9$\times$$10^5$ CFU/g) in F. solani-infested soil significantly reduced disease incidences by 68 to 76% after 25 to 30 days. The results supported that B. subtilis YB-70 have excellent potentials as a biocontrol agent.
The objective of the study was to observe the anti-diabetic effect of Solani nigri Herba(SH). The following experimental results were derived from the measurement of the levels of glucose, GOT and GPT in the serum and weight from a group of experimental rats by way of the injection of streptozotocin as well as the oral administration of Solani nigri Herba water extracts. The glucose level in the serum significantly decreased in the Solani nigri Herba-dosed group(SH2,12.6 mg/100 g rat weight) on the 10th day. The GOT level of SHI(4.2 mg/100 g Solani nigri Herba) and SH2 in the serum slightly decreased, but no significance to compare with control group. The GPT level of SH1 and SH2 in the serum slightly decreased, but no significance to compare with control group. The weight of rat of SH1 and SH2 in the serum slightly increased, but no significance to compare with control group. In conclusion, Solani nigri Herba appeared to have significance inhibitory effects on the rise of blood sugar level in the experimentally induced diabetics.
Early blight of tomato caused by Alternaria solani, is responsible for severe yield losses in tomato. The conidia survive on soil surface and old dry lower leaves of the plant and spread when suitable climatic conditions are available. Macroclimatic study reveals that highest inoculum concentration of Alternaria spores appeared in May 2012 to 2013 and lowest concentration during January 2012 to 2013. High night temperature positively correlated and significantly (P < 0.01) involved in conidial spore dispersal and low relative humidity (RH) displayed significant (P < 0.05) but negative correlation with conidial dispersal. The objective of the study was to modify microclimatic conditions of tomato crop canopy which may hamper conidial dispersal and reduce disease severity. We evaluated effect of marigold intercropping and plastic mulching singly and in consortia on A. solani conidial density, tomato leaf damage and microclimatic parameters as compar to tomato alone (T). Tomato-marigold intercropping-plastic mulching treatment (T + M + P) showed 35-39% reduction in disease intensity as compared to tomato alone. When intercropped with tomato, marigold served as barrier to conidial movement and plastic mulching prevented evapotranspiration and reduced the canopy RH that resulted in less germination of A. solani spores. Marigold intercropping and plastic mulching served successfully as physical barrier against conidial dissemination to diminish significantly the tomato foliar damage produced by A. solani.

The antimicrobial activity of acetone, hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol extracts from leaves, stems, immature green fruits, and red fruits of tomato plants was examined against six phytopathogens. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the acetonic extracts from these four plant parts was lower than that of the other solvents. Among the acetonic extracts, tomato leaves had a lower MIC than the other tomato parts. The acetonic extract from tomato leaves was therefore selected as a source of antimicrobial substances. The acetonic extract from tomato leaves inhibited mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, Glomerella cingulata, and Rhizoctonia solani. Mycelial growth of R. solani treated with acetone extract from leaves showed more susceptibility than the other phytopathogens. Using 0.31 mg/ml of the acetonic extract from leaves, mycelial growth of R. solani on days 1, 2, and 3 decreased by 50.0, 52.1, and 64.0%, respectively, compared with acetone solvent treatment. The antimicrobial compounds effective against R. solani were identified as linolenic acid and caffeic acid by bioautography and GC-MS. These two compounds were used to treat six phytopathogens to confirm their antimicrobial activities. Linolenic acid inhibited mycelial growth of R. solani, while caffeic acid showed only slight antimicrobial activity. Results indicated that we propose extracts from tomato leaves which included antimicrobial compounds may provide a new lead in the pursuit of new biological sources of agrochemical candidates.
