A total sample of 215 specimens of the Iksookimia koreensis was collected monthly from June 2004 to June 2005 in the Namdae stream, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea. The age of every individual sample was estimated by the number of annual rings on the scales. A significant decrease of gonadosomatic index was noted between May and June reflecting the reproduction during this period. I. koreensis exhibited a strong bias to female (female : male, 1 : 0.56). The maximum age observed was 3 years old for male & female, both. The von Bertalanffy growth curves were expressed as $L_t=126.30[1-\exp\{-0.576(t+0.940)\}]$ for females and $L_t=100.19[1-\exp\{-1.119(t+0.695)\}]$ for males.Growth curve of weight was expressed as $W_t=11.567[1-\exp\{-0.576(t+0.940)\}]^{3.199}$ for females, $W_t=5.514[1-\exp\{-1.119(t+0.695)\}]^{3.199}$ for males. On the other hand, a significant difference in the growth rate between both sexes was found(i.e. females grew faster than males).
Present study was performed to describe the morphological and molecular characterization of Toxocara tanuki (Nematoda: Ascaridae) from Korean raccoon dog, Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis, naturally infected in the Republic of Korea (Korea). Juvenile and adult worms of T. tanuki were recovered in 5 out of 10 raccoon dogs examined and the larval worms were detected in 15 out of 20 muscle samples (75%). Small lateral alae were observed on the cranial end of the body in male and female adults and 2 long spicules (3.0-3.5 mm) were characteristically observed in the posterior end of males. In SEM observation, 18 pairs of proximal precloacal, a precloacal median, a postcloacal median and 5 pairs of postcloacal papillae were uniquely revealed in the posterior portion of males, but the proximal papillae were not shown in the lateral ends of females. Molecular analysis on the 18S rRNA partial DNA sequences was revealed the same finding in both samples, adult worms and muscle larvae, which are closely related to T. tanuki. In conclusion, it was confirmed for the first time that T. tanuki is indigenously distributed, the Korean raccoon dog is acted as the natural definitive host of this nematode in Korea and the morphological characteristics of T. tanuki were shown in specific structure for single postcloacal median papilla in male.
This report deals with the morphology of the horsehair worm isolated in canine vomitus. We received a worm in living status. The worm was investigated by using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for species determination. Grossly, the worm was blackish brown in color and 215 mm in length and 1.2 mm in maximum width. Microscopically, the worm was composed of epicuticle, cuticle, epidermis, muscle, mesenchyme, pseudocoel, nerve cord and gut. But the genital organ was not developed. The SEM study revealed that the cuticle contains five types of elevated structures called areoles. The cuticular surface of the parasite is covered by an abundant type of areoles: simple areole, tubercle areole, bulging areole, crowned areole, circumcluster areole. The observed characteristics of the specimen in this study are same to those of genus Chordodes. And we concluded that it is a male of Chordodes koreensis belong to Gordiida. Only nine species of freshwater Nematomorpha are known from Korea, two of which belong to the genus Chordodes. But the case of parasitic horsehair worm in dogs do not recorded, and this is a first gordiosis of dog in Korea.

The efficacy of lidocaine hydrochloride and Clove oil as anaesthetics was evaluated in the Korean rose bitterling, Rhodeus uyekii (Mori, 1935) and oily bitterling, Acheilognathus koreensis (Kim and Kim, 1990) at four different temperatures of $10^{\circ}C,\;15^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. When complete anaesthesia was acquired less than 3 min and recovery was acquired less than 10 min, the optimal dose range of lidocain hydrochloride at $20^{\circ}C$ was 250${\~}$550 ppm in Korean rose bitterling, and 150${\~}$550 ppm in oily bitterling, respectively. In case of Clove oil, the optimal dose range at $20^{\circ}C$ was 40${\~}$200 ppm in Korean rose bitterling and 80${\~}$240 ppm in oily bitterling, respectively. Both of lidocaine hydrochloride and Clove oil resulted in a negatively dose-dependent manner for anaesthesia induction time in these two species. Recovery times were more variable in relation to anaesthetic doses, but in general higher anaesthetic doses resulted in similar or longer recovery time. As expected, the lower temperature resulted in longer anaesthesia induction and recovery time. The study demonstrated that lidocaine hydrochloride and Clove oil can be used as effective anaesthetics in these two species. The results from this study could be useful for aquaculturists industry and other related husbandry practices that require anaesthesia of Korean rose bitterling and oily bitterling.

Morphology and distribution of the minute tubercles projected on the skin surface of larvae with its development was observed in the Korean bitterling, Acheilognathus koreensis, known as an endemic freshwater fish. The epidermis of the larvae consisted of a thin single layer, having smaller basophilic flat or round-flattened basal cells. In between the single cell layer, two or three layers were added and they consisted mainly of large epidermal cells just above basal cells. These large unicellular epidermal cells were mainly scale-shaped and rarely cone-shaped, and do not give any histochemical tests for mucosubstances. They were present in anterior region and most region of yolk sac. Whereas, vestigial epidermal cells were distributed in the body region and the caudal fin-fold region. These two kinds of epidermal cells, called minute tubercles, increased in number and height from Just to 8 days after hatching, but as the larvae develop gradually, they became to reduce. At 31days after hatching of free swimming stage and absolute absorption stage of the yolk sac, the minute tubercles did not exist on the whole skin of the larvae.
PCR-based Weissella species-specific detection method was developed to apply for the discrimination of Korean and Chinese kimchi by detecting a Weissella species only found in Korean or Chinese kimchi. PCR primers were designed from the species-specific sequence in the recN gene of each species. The primers allowed the species-specific detection and identification of nine species in the genera Weissella, and were successfully applied to the detection of W. cibaria, W. confusa, W. koreensis, and W. soli in kimchi with 20 ng template DNA. W. cibaria, W. confusa, and W. koreensis were detected from the Korean kimchi samples tested but W. soli was not detected. However, the four species were detected from Chinese kimchi samples. PCR-based W. soli-specific detection could not be perfectly applied as the Chinese kimchi discriminating method but has significance as an approach to evaluate the potential of scientific verification method based on the difference of microbial community.

Egg development and early life history of the endangered Korean freshwater fish, Microphysogobio koreensis, was investigated to get a basic information for establishing its conservation strategy. The matured adult fishes were sampled at Imsil-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea in May 1 2012 and artificially fertilized. The fertilized eggs were spherical, separated demersal and $1.8{\pm}0.14mm$ in diameter. The hatching of the embryo began at about 29 hours after fertilization under water temperature of $23^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched pre-larvae were average $2.2{\pm}0.48mm$ in total length. At 4 days after hatching, the post-larvae were $3.6{\pm}0.55mm$ in total length and york sac was completely absorbed. At 20 days after hatching, their fin rays were formed and finally the larvae entered juvenile stage and grew up to $6.5{\pm}0.77mm$ in total length. At 60 days after hatching, the total length reached $24.4{\pm}1.71mm$, and the band patterns of he head and lateral side were similar to adult fish. Based on this study, the fertilized eggs of M. koreensis hatched more quickly and the pre-larvae length was also smaller, compared with related species.
To clarify the structure and function of ecosystem and establish the method for the conservation of biodiversity and community analysis at Soksacheon and Gyebangcheon, the authors surveyed the aquatic environment and freshwater fish fauna at 13 stations from July, 1995 to June, 1996. Collected 1,908 individuals were belong to 20 Species, 4 Oredr, 1 Suborder, 6 family, 7 Subfamily. The detail results are as follows. 1. It was confirmed that most of the surveyed stations were mountain valley of river type Aa, Ab. River structures were mixed with pebble, sand, rock and water quality of Soksacheon were pH(7.41), [COND.(0.051), TURB.(10.00), DO(8.66), W.T.(15.4)] and Gyebangcheon were pH(7.44), [COND.(0.097), TURB.(21.59), DO(9.35), W.T.(15.4)]. 2. Among them, 18 species were primary freshwater fishes(99.98%) and 2 species of pheripheral freshwater fishes(0.02%). 12 species(60%) of them were endemic species of Korea and they were Moroco kumgangenesis, Microphysogovio longidorsalis, Cobitis rotundicaudata, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, Coreoleucisus splendidus, Cobitis longicorpus, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawai, Brachymystax lenok, Hemibarbus longirostris, Silurus microdorsalis, Cobitis koreensis koreensis and Hemibarbus mylodon. 3. Dominant species were Moroco kumgangenesis(46.85%) and Zacco temmincki(27.35%).
This study was carried out to clarify the distribution pattern of Salicaceae species which are considered as obligatory riparian vegetation, and also the correspondence between their distribution and the environment factors. Eighty-three study sites by stratified sampling were selected from the upstream to the downstream of An-sung stream. Vegetation factors such as coverage by species, disturbance, etc., and environmental factors including microtopography, soil properties, etc., measured and analyzed. Salicaceae species were identified as total 2 genera, 11 species through all study area, and the average occurring species were 2.8 species.5. koreensis among other species showed highest occurring frequency at An-sung streams, and also it was distributed widely through study area. S. gracizistyla was mainly fecund at upstream sites, where sandy soil texture and high longitudinal slope were developed. S. purpurea vats. japonica was mostly observed in the sandy soil, the same as S. gracilistytu and however, was not dominant but rather mixed with S. gracitistyta and S. koreensis. On the other hand, distribution of S. glandulosa were closely related with littoral zone of the lake and the lower sea level with sandy loam and loamy sand Boils of high organic matter content. Under CCA, canonical correspondence analysis, distribution of Saticaceae species was positively correlated with environmental gradients such as soil properties along to topography.

The objective of this study was to analyze social wasps' urban distribution tendency based on 10 species found in two metropolitan cities (Busan and Daegu) of South Korea. There 10 species included six species (Vespa mandarinia, V. ducalis, V. crabro flavofasciata, Vespula koreensis koreensis, Parapolybia indica, and Polistes snelleni) of forest dwellers that inhabited urban main forests and satellite forests, two species (V. simillima simillima and V. analis parallela) of facultative dwellers that nested at diverse sites of urban areas with greater preference for urban forest, and two species (V. velutina nigrithorax and P. rothneyi koreanus) of urban dwellers that nested at almost all sites, including urban and forest areas. These urban dwellers were found to adapt well to an urban environment based on their far higher rate of urban nesting compared to facultative dwellers. When distribution tendencies of facultative dwellers and urban dwellers in Busan and Daegu were compared, a regular distribution was mostly observed in Busan with a dense forest network. For Daegu that lacked forest connectivity, the greatest distribution of species was found in the nearby urban forest. For Daegu, a city further away from forests, urban dwellers occurred far beyond forest sites compared to Busan with a dense forest network.
