  • The fundamental period is an important parameter for seismic design and seismic risk assessment of building structures. In this paper, a simplified theoretical method to predict the fundamental period of masonry infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frame is developed based on the basic theory of engineering mechanics. The different configurations of the RC frame as well as masonry walls were taken into account in the developed method. The fundamental period of the infilled structure is calculated according to the integration of the lateral stiffness of the RC frame and masonry walls along the height. A correction coefficient is considered to control the error for the period estimation, and it is determined according to the multiple linear regression analysis. The corrected formula is verified by shaking table tests on two masonry infilled RC frame models, and the errors between the estimated and test period are 2.3% and 23.2%. Finally, a probability-based method is proposed for the corrected formula, and it allows the structural engineers to select an appropriate fundamental period with a certain safety redundancy. The proposed method can be quickly and flexibly used for prediction, and it can be hand-calculated and easily understood. Thus it would be a good choice in determining the fundamental period of RC frames infilled with masonry wall structures in engineering practice instead of the existing methods.

  • A seat frame structure in automotive vehicles made of polymer matrix composite to achieve weight reduction at low cost was developed. In order to design and manufacture the actual product studies on material selection and structural analysis were performed. Structural analysis was performed with a finite element method. The analysis was done for several cases suggested in various safety regulations. Each results was utilized to modify the actual shape to obtain a lighter, safer and more stable design. The final design was used to produce a sample bottom plate of the seat structure with reinforced by X-shape frame. Substitution of the material resulted in a weight reduction effect with equivalent strength fatigue and impact characteristics.

  • There is a large interest to find reliable and automatic methods for crack detection and quantification in the railway bogie frame. The non-destructive inspection of railway bogie frame has been performed by ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing in general inspection. The magnetic particle method has been utilized in the defect inspection of the bogie frame but the grinding process is required before inspection and the dust is developed resulting from the processing. The objective of this paper is to apply the inspection method of bogie frame using infra-red thermography. The infra-red thermography system using the excitation of eddy current was performed for the defect evaluation of weld specimen inserted artificial defects. The result shows that the infra-red thermography method can detect the surface and inner defects in weld specimen for bogie frame.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Hangul font on reading speed when texts are displayed on the computer screen. Background: Reading performance is influenced by fonts. However, there are few studies of Hangul font from a cognitive perspective. Fonts could affect reading performance directly and indirectly, interacting with other visual-perceptual factors such as size, word spacing, and line spacing. Method: In experiment 1, two variables were manipulated; a frame condition(square frame non-square frame) and a stroke condition(serif sans-serif). According to each condition, one of the four fonts was applied to the texts. The height of the four fonts was controlled. The participants were asked to read aloud the presented texts. In experiment 2, the non-square frame fonts were adjusted to have approximately the same size, width, letter spacing, and word spacing as the square frame fonts. The experimental design and task used in experiment 2 were identical with experiment 1. Results: In general, reading speed was faster in the square frame fonts than in the non-square frame fonts. The reading speed was not significantly different across stroke conditions. Conclusion: The frame of Hangul font significantly influenced reading speed. These results suggest that the type of Hangul font is a factor to affect reading performance. Application: The frame of fonts should be considered in designing of new fonts. The square frame fonts should be the preferred choice to enhance legibility.

  • A fatigue test on the steel welded L-shaped frame was conducted. The frame was consisted with carbon steel tube and reinforced bracket. The four type reinforced brackets were fabricated. They were two rectangular plate reinforced bracket, two sided pentagon plate reinforced bracket, triangular plate reinforced bracket and fully reinforced bracket. The fatigue test of frame was conducted with axial tension loading. The fatigue simulation of the steel welded L-shaped frame was also performed by the finite element method with code FEMFAT. The frame of fully reinforced bracket had the highest fatigue life and reinforced quality factor.

  • This study introduces a new load increment method for the ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures by including strain-hardening effects. The proposed method is a nonlinear static analysis technique employed for RC frame structures subjected to constant gravity loads and monotonically increasing lateral loads. The material nonlinearity in RC structural elements is considered by adopting plastic hinge concept which is extended by including the strain hardening as well as interaction between bending moment and axial force. Geometric non-linearity, known as second order effect, is implemented to the method as well.

  • Design sensitivity analysis of a vehicle system is an essential tool for design optimization and trade-off studies. Most optimization algorithms require the derivatives of cost and constraint function with respect to design in order to calculate the next improved design. This paper presents an efficient algorithm application for the design sensitivity analysis, using the direct differentiation method. A mounting area of suspension that welded on chassis frame is analyzed to show the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method. • Electrical instruments and devices contained in cabinets for controlling nuclear power plants require seismic qualification; likewise, in-cabinet response spectrum (ICRS) is necessary. Gupta et al. (1999) suggested the Ritz method, where rocking, frame bending, and plate bending behaviors of cabinets are considered, as a method for determining ICRS. This research proposes a method to determine the rocking stiffness of cabinets, which represents its rocking behavior. The cabinet is fixed on mounting frames and is connected to the base concrete by anchors. When horizontal excitation is applied to the cabinet, the mounting frames at anchors are locally deformed, the mounting frames are bent, and then rocking in the cabinet becomes evident. A method to determine equivalent vertical spring stiffness representing the local deformation of the mounting frames at anchors is then proposed. Subsequently, the rocking stiffness of this mounting frame is calculated upon assumption of the mounting frame as an indeterminate beam.

  • A multi-screen environment provides a new opportunity for digital signage applications, where various irregularly shaped screens are employed as an effective means for advertisements and information. A formation method applicable to numerous irregularly shaped screens is proposed to provide a new perspective on digital signage applications. The crucial part of the proposed method comes from the geometric sensing of each screen and the formation of a virtual screen where geometrically aligned content extraction and encoding are employed for content transmission to each screen. In addition, a software-based synchronization method for the proposed system is proposed to address the frame-level synchronization between screens. The experimental results of the proposed method show an improved performance of the frame-level synchronization, where the inconsistency between frames is not identified.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to improve low light image. In order to improve the image quality of a night image with a moving object as much as the quality of a daytime image, the following tasks were performed. Firstly, we reduce the noisy of the input night image and improve the night image by the tone mapping method. Secondly, we segment the input night image into a foreground with motion and a background without motion. The motion is detected using both the difference between the current frame and the previous frame and the difference between the current frame and the night background image. The background region of the night image takes pixels from corresponding positions in the daytime image. The foreground regions of the night image take the pixels from the corresponding positions of the image which is improved by the tone mapping method. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the visual quality more clearly than the existing methods.
