Application of Grid-based Approach for Auto Mesh Generation of Vacuum Chamber (자동 요소망 생성을 위한 격자구성기법 적용)

  • A seamless analysis of complex geometry is one of greatly interesting topic. However, there are still gaps between the industrial applications and fundamental academic studies owing to time consuming modeling process. To resolve this problem, an auto mesh generation program based on grid-based approach has been developed for IT-product in the present study. At first, base mesh and skin mesh are generated using the information of entities which extracted from IGES file. Secondly the provisional core mesh with rugged boundary geometry is constructed by superimposing the skin mesh as well as the base mesh generated from the CAD model. Finally, the positions of boundary nodes are adjusted to make a qualified mesh by adapting node modification and smoothing techniques. Also, for the sake of verification of mesh quality, the hexahedral auto mesh constructed by the program is compared with the corresponding tetrahedral free mesh and hexahedral mapped mesh through static finite element analyses. Thereby, it is anticipated that the grid-based approach can be used as a promising pre-processor for integrity evaluation of various IT-products.

  • Wing is the most important part of aircraft which produces lift. In general when aircraft takes off or lands, high lift is required and additional devices are adopted in front and aft-side of wing, which constitute so-called multi element airfoils. The objective of this research is to develop a specialized grid generation program to help engineers in reducing human labor and eliminating time-consuming process for mesh regeneration by deforming the initially-given grid system with efficient deforming method. This paper describes briefly about the mesh deformation methods, and provides some results to verify the quality of deformed mesh and eventually correctness of current approach.

  • In the present study a mesh generation program is developed for the flow analysis of industrial mixers. With this program one can select various design parameters such as impeller types, vessel type, number of baffles, number of blades, blade pitched angle, stages of impeller, rotational speed etc. Post processing capabilities are also imbedded in the program. Along with brief explanation of the program, examples of flow simulation for various type of mixers by using the program are also presented to show effectiveness of the program. It is expected that this program can be used to understand the effect of design parameters on the performance of particular type of the mixer, and hence to achieve the optimal design.

  • In this paper, our effort to apply 3-D Virtual Reality system for stereoscopic visualization of mesh data on the web is briefly described. This study is an extension of our previous and on-going research efforts to develop an automatic grid generation program specialized for wing mesh, named as eGWing. The program is developed by using JAVA programming language, and it can be used either as an application program on a local computer or as an applet in the network environment. In this research advancing layer method(ALM) augmented by elliptic smoothing method is used for the structured grid generation. And to achieve a stereoscopic viewing capability, two graphic windows are used to render its own viewing image for the left and right eye respectively. These two windows are merged into one image using 3D monitor and the viewers can see the mesh data visualization results with stereoscopic depth effects by using polarizing glasses. In this paper three dimensional mesh data visualization with stereoscopic technique combined with 3D monitor is demonstrated, and the current achievement would be a good start-up for further development of low-cost high-quality stereoscopic mesh data visualization system which can be shared by many users through the web.

  • The optimal mesh refinement has a meaning that error of the every element is within an allowable level and in uniformly distributed. The adaptive mesh generation may be required to achieve the optimal mesh generation. For the purpose of optimal mesh generation, an error estimation and an adaptive mesh refinement are required. Using the adaptive mesh generation the second finite element analysis is performed with the result of the first analysis. In the process the error estimation is required. In this study the adaptive mesh generation program for triangular element is developed, and for a posteriori error estimation the stress projection approach is considered. It has been found the multigrid technique, where the error estimation and the mesh generation are combined in multi-step of analysis, may be used efficiently in the finite element analysis.

  • This paper explains outline of a behavior analysis program for underground structures, and its application to a tunnel problem. The program can deal with elasto-plastic behavior of medium and supporting structures, discontinuous behavior due to existing joint, creation and propagation of cracks. in-situ loading condition, and incremental behavior due to stepwise excavation, etc. The program also has additional capabilities such as graphic output of mesh, displacement pattern, stress condition, and safety factor contour, and automatic mesh generation during the excavation steps.

  • This paper is concerned with the propram of the automatic mesh generation for 2-dimensional domain which contains the curved boundaries and holes. This program treats a new vertical-line drawing method. This method starts with 4-subdivisions of problem domain and the classification of the cross points of grid lines and boundaries. The new node is generated by the vertical line to the line connecting the two intersections of a boundary and two grid lines in gereral. And the node very close to the boundary is moved to the boundary. The automatic mesh generation composed of only rectangular elements is achieved by this procedure. The boundaries are piecewise-curves composed of lines, circles, arcs, and free curves. The free curves are generated by B-Spline form. Although there were some bad elements for the complex boundary, it was possible to obtain the acceptible rectangular elements for the given boundaries.

  • In this paper it is discussed about the program which makes automatically the preprocessing data on the graphic editor of PC monitor. Three kinds of colors are used in order to make know a boundary_element, in_element, out_element. By initial mesh generation, three kinds of elements are made; the element with three nodes, four nodes, five nodes. The node of boundary element draw a vertical line to the boundary. At that time the element with three nodes is removed and the element with four nodes is changed to the element with four nodes. The domain graphic on this paper is compose of piecewise curves which has many lines and a hole. The data of element is written on the memory of PC computer. The program controls the memory address according to the change of element's quantity; disappearance and addition of element. All this work is operated on the PC computer.

  • Fracture mechanics analysis (FMA) is an essential work for integrity evaluation of nuclear power plant. The flaws inspected by In-Service Inspection(ISI) should be confirmed by FMA for the decision of the operation status of stop or continuance. The basic data for FMA are the stress of the interested area. The purpose of this research is to develop a system which can obtain stress data efficiently based on various database. Mesh generation program generates mesh using MSC/PATRAN and provides input file for finite element analysis according to the databases (shape, dimension, transient and material). The stress data from the finite element analysis are stored to be stress database so that it can be applied to FMA. As an example, the system developed by this study is applied to pressurizer nozzle and confirmed to be a useful tool for efficient FMA.

C* Based Life Assessment of 3D Crack at High Temperature (C*에 기초한 3차원 고온균열 수명평가)

  • In recent years, the subject of remaining life assessment has drawn considerable attention in chemical plants, where various structural components typically operate at high temperature an pressure. Thus a life prediction methodology accounting for high temperature creep fracture is increasingly needed for the components. Critical defects in such structures are generally found in the form of semi-elliptical surface crack, and the analysis of which is consequently an important problem in engineering fracture mechanics. On this background, we first develop an auto mesh generation program for detailed 3-D finite element analyses of axial and circumferential semi-elliptical surface cracks in a piping system. A high temperature creep fracture parameter C-integral is obtained from the finite element analyses of generated 3-D models. Post crack growth module is further appended here to calculate the amount of crack growth. Finally the remaining lives of surface cracked pipes for various analytical parameters are assessed using the developed life assessment program.
