  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the effects of overestimation of their own body shape on weight control behaviors, mental condition, physical activity, dietary behavior, health-related quality of life, and nutritional status among young Korean females. Methods: A total of 1,514 women aged 20-39 years who are not pregnant and lactating among those who participated in the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010~2011), were analyzed and grouped into underestimation (n=120), normal estimation (NE, n=840), and overestimation (OE, n=554), based on their body perception compared to actual percent ideal body weights. Variables were compared between OE group and NE group. Results: The subjects in OE group were significantly younger (29.5 vs. 30.5 years, respectively p < 0.05) and had lower body mass index (20.9 vs. 22.2 respectively, p < 0.01), health-related quality of life measured by EQ-5D (EuroQol-5 Dimension)(0.97 vs. 0.98 respectively, p < 0.05), nutrition adequacy ratio (NAR) of protein (0.91 vs. 0.93 respectively, p < 0.05), phosphorous (0.93 vs. 0.96 respectively, p < 0.05), and iron (0.70 vs. 0.75 respectively, p < 0.01), and index of nutrition quality (INQ) of iron (0.84 vs. 0.89 respectively, p < 0.05) compared to those in the NE group. The results of logistic regression showed that unmarried status (OR 1.32; 1.01~1.72) and severely underweight/underweight status (OR 1.94; 1.01~3.75)/(OR 1.81; 1.34~2.45) were significantly related to the probability of overestimation by the subjects. Significantly more women in OE group practiced fasting, skipping meals, and taking prescribed pills to lose body weights and had skipped breakfast compared to those in the NE group. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that the Korean young women's distorted perception of own body shape may be associated with undesirable weight control behavior, low quality of life, and lower nutritional status. Therefore, nutrition education for this group should include information on correct body shape perception and its importance.

  • This study examined four subjects with close to average body-size values in four stages based on the average BMI value of middle-aged women aged 45 to 59 years. The first experimental pants was developed with two kinds of educational materials pants pattern. After using a clothing-suitability evaluation to identify problems, a pants pattern suitable for the body shape of middle-aged women was developed by modifying and supplementing the initial design. The fit assessment revealed that pattern A had a problem with wrinkles in the hip and thigh areas due to the long crotch length, and pattern B had a short bottom length, which caused the bottom to curl in toward the groin or for the bottom to stick at the hips. The second experimental pants was developed to address these issues and overall satisfaction with the dimensions was higher than for the first educational pattern. The proper front and rear length extensions satisfied movement functionality and appearance requirements, and increasing the gradient of the back centerline-rather than expanding the width of the back crotch-improved the functionality.

  • This study conducted a survey to compare the size of ready-made clothes for different body shapes and body sizes, and to discover the differences in satisfaction with the size of ready-made clothes. The subjects were women in their 208 and 308 from Busan and Gyeongnam. The women were classified into groups: normal weight, overweight, and obese, using the Body Mass Index (BMI). The comparison of the body size showed a significant difference among the shapes; the average BMI in overweight women was 24.2 while that of obese women was 27.6. For the clothing size for each body shape, obese women most often wore size 77 and size 88, regardless of the sizes of upper and lower garments. The size consistency of upper and lower garments was the lowest in obese women. However, in most of the shapes, women tended to choose larger-sizes for lower garments than for upper ones. The more obese the subject, the less inclined they were to wear garments for their real body size. Satisfaction with the clothing size was significantly different between body shapes; the more obese, the lower the level of satisfaction with the size. As well, satisfaction with the fit of clothing at certain parts was shown to be low especially in the bust measurement, shoulder width, upper garment length, crotch length, and thigh circumference. When surveyed about the use of alterations for different body shapes, the results were that over 65% of subjects did not alter upper garments regardless of their body shape. Comparatively, 68% or above of all body shapes did do alterations to lower garments for example, the length of pants or skirts.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a body alignment correction program on asymmetrically developed squash players. Method : 30 experienced squash players who showed asymmetric body development, after evaluation of moire topography contour line shape, were involved in the experiment. All of them were right-handed and had more than five years of experience playing squash. Variables of body composition, moire topography and EMG were statistically compared between pre- and post- application of the 12-week body alignment correction program. The program consisted of 10-minute, left-handed forehand and backhand drive movements and 36 minutes performing 12 different yoga postures. Results : First, the body alignment correction program showed significant effects on the total weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index of the participants. Second, a decrease of right side inclined angles and an increase of left side inclined angles might result in a higher left-right symmetry rate and a better left-right balance; however the data was not statistically significant. Third, the EMG left-right deviation of erector spinae and latissimus decreased and the erector spinae muscle was thought to be more essential for vertebral movement and left-right asymmetry correction. Conclusion : A body alignment correction program, including yoga and opposite side exercises, could reduce left-right asymmetry.

The questionnaire included general charac-teristics, obesity index, eating behavior and snack intake pattern. The results were as follows. The proportion of obese subjects was 10% by Rohrer index but the rate of obesity by body mass index was 3.3%. The self perception of body shape were optimal (47.9%), fat (29.8%), slightly lean (14.5%), obese (4.7%) and lean (3.1%). Generally, the propor-tion of girls responded them as “fat” was greater than boys. The greater percentage of boys responded them as “lean” than girls. The subjects don't take breakfast regularly were 50.8% and the main reason for skipping breakfast was the lack of time (55.2%). The main type of breakfast was cooked rice (78.9%). The most favorite snacks hun out to be cookies (36.5%) and 45.7% of subjects take snacks during the rest. The reason for taking snacks was “feeling hungry” (52.6%) and the taste was the most important factor of snack choice. The results of this study showed that the most of subjects were not in a serious obesity condition, and their eating habits were generally satisfactory. Also, this study has found that it is necessary to educate the students the importance of regular intake of a balanced meal. (Korean J Community Nutrition 8(2) : 129∼137, 2003)

  • This study was designed to find out how the sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, BMI(Body Mass Index) of adult women affect their body image and body satisfaction. A questionnaire was prepared in the survey and a total of 456 adult women were selected by way of stratified random sampling. The research findings are as follows. The sociocultural attitudes toward appearance were shown in two factors of 'internalization' and 'recognition' The body image was shown in three dimensions of 'care for appearance,' 'concern about weight,' and 'appearance attractiveness'. Internalization, recognition, and BMI affected care for appearance. Concern about weight was affected by internalization, and BMI. Appearance attractiveness was affected only by BMI. Most people were not satisfied with their weight and overall body shape in spite that they in fact had normal or lean figures except 3.3% of the total samples. From the above research findings, adult women's satisfaction with their body was shown high when they were subjectively satisfied with their appearance attractiveness. And the results indicate that adult women are under pressure of socioculturally distorted image of beauty.

  • The WHtR (waist to height ratio) and ABSI (a body shape index) are indicators that reflect abdominal obesity. This study examined the insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome prediction ability of ABSI and WHtR. In this study, 4,395 people aged 20 years or older, who underwent physical examinations at a General Hospital in Gyeonggi-do from January 2017 to September 2017 were assessed on a cross section survey. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the criteria of the AHA/NHLBI. Insulin resistance was judged to be insulin resistance when the HOMA-IR value was 3.0 or more. Both men and women showed a stronger correlation between WHtR and the metabolic risk factors than ABSI. The AUC value of WHtR and ABSI was 0.849 and 0.676, respectively (p<0.001). The AUC value of WHtR and ABSI for predicting insulin resistance was 0.818 and 0.641, respectively (p<0.001). In conclusion, the ABSI has low predictive power of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome whereas the WHtR has good predictive power for metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance.

  • This study was carried out on 132 obese women who satisfied both of the conditions for the obesity: over 1.6 in Rohrer index and over 90cm in bust girth. The purpose of the study was to classify the body types of the obese women and find out their respective characteristics. The characteristics of the body shape were as follows. The one was that the height of the front waist was higher than that of the back waist. The other was that the depth of the front abdomen was high, which implies the protruding of the abdominal region. Five factors were extracted as the result of the factor analysis. Body types were classified 4 types(type 1 : long upper torso, type 2 : obese torso, type 3 : short and less upper torso, type 4 : obese arms and legs) according to the cluster analysis.
