  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe work experiences of triage nurses working at emergency departments in Korea. Methods: A qualitative descriptive research method was used. Twenty-one nurses of emergency department participated in the first interview and 16 of them participated in the second interview. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field notes. Qualitative content analysis was utilized to analyze the data. Results: Forty-eight codes, 12 categories, and six themes emerged from the data analysis: caring on the frontline, burden as an initial evaluator, handling things alone, lack of others' understanding, becoming an expert, and needs for improvement. Participating triage nurses faced many challenges and difficult situations in emergency departments. They felt burden and loneliness as initial evaluator. Also, they felt pride in their work and struggled to become a professional. Conclusion: This study is the first qualitative study that has focused on exploring the experiences of triage nurses in emergency departments in Korea. The results provide description and in-depth understanding of working experiences of triage nurses. The results provide valuable fundamental data for regulation, clinical practice, education, and research for triage nurses in Korean emergency departments.

  • Not only in building design but also in HVAC system design, it is important to ensure an objectivity in schematic design. In the study, the author suggested a method to make a logical decision for quality design factors a(footing the selection of HVAC type in initial design process, and to provide objective design values. Fuzzy theory, one of the theories describing in quantitative way the ambiguous-natured linguistic values, was used to determine the qualitative design factors of linguistic parameter nature. It was found that it has a potential as a method to determine a HVAC type satisfying the required values of qualitative design factors involved in selection of the system type. But this needs further studies to be settled in the selecting of HVAC type.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how the qualitative research is applied to mixed method research and thereby to gain an insight to suggest reasonable ways of employing qualitative method in order to accomplish intended goal of research, especially in the field of mathematics education. For that purpose, this study carefully selects and analyzes 5 article that used mixed method and were published by Education of Primary School Mathematics Journal in 2012. Unlike those a few previous studied on mixed method that focused on producing general trend by simply showing quantitative information on what the frequence of used research topic, content, methods combination, quantitative methods, and qualitative methods, this study provides detailed result of qualitative analysis on mixed studies. In sum, this study concludes with practical and in-depth suggestions on how to improve validity of mixed research and qualitative research in the field of mathematic of education.

  • This paper introduces a branch of qualitative method, called an in-depth interview method. By collecting data from the stories of Korean middle school students and a 9th grade American girl who used Geometer's Sketchpad and various software respectively for their mathematical problem solving, the qualitative analysis leads us to understand how such software affect their lives with mathematics subject. The unique characteristics and strands of each student's utterances reflect how software plays a role of learning aid for their mathematics learning. The arm of this study is both to get a good picture of each student's self-perceived relationship to mathematics as well as to explore external and objective parameters and factors in each student's internal situations. The qualitative descriptions of the collected data help us guide the students to the points where they could develop their interests and satisfaction with subject matter better. In this way, teachers may have more realistic understandings of how students become interested and motivated by mathematics, so that they are better able to find out ways of grasping the totalities of how the use of technology is interwoven into the school curricular.

  • This research discussed a general concept on the qualitative research methods in mathematics education. It provided a classification of research methods in mathematics education. It also described research trends in mathematics education. It addressed how research design facilitates formulating a research problem, selecting a research design, choosing who and what to study, deciding how to approach Participants, selecting means to collect data choosing how to analyzing data, and interpreting data and applying the analysis. This study addressed the issues involved in choosing relevant populations and in selecting and sampling qualitative data. It described how populations are conceptualized and distinguished between probability sampling and criterion based selection. It discussed not only data arrangement such as, cross-sectional and categorical indexing, non-cross- sectional data organization, but also diagram flow chart matrix, cognitive map, family tree to facilitate analyzing data.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to integrate the results of qualitative studies to understand critical care survivors' experience of the post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Methods: This was a meta-synthesis of primary studies that used qualitative methods. We reviewed 26 qualitative studies on PICS selected from 8 international and Korean databases and from a manual search. Thomas and Harden's 3 stages (free coding, development of descriptive themes, generation of analytical themes) for thematic synthesis were utilized to analyze the collected qualitative data. Results: Four descriptive themes emerged from the thematic synthesis: weak physical conditions, psycho-emotional changes, the painful-memory of intensive care units, and social vulnerability. The analytical theme for the current study was "unfamiliarity with the vulnerable self." Critical care survivors had to confront entirely different "selves" after discharge from intensive care units. They had become physically weak, psychologically unstable, and the critical memories continued to create distress. These changes increased their social vulnerability by making them dependent on others, causing family conflicts, and changing interpersonal relationships. Conclusions: Finding from this qualitative synthesis and other related literature highlight the severity of PICS and the importance of rehabilitative intervention for critical care survivors.

  • Purpose: The small-scale environmental impact assessment system in Korea was introduced and implemented in August 2000, but it has a problem that it cannot guarantee implementation due to the large proportion of qualitative reduction measures for each evaluation item. Therefore, when preparing a small-scale environmental impact assessment, research was conducted on how to improve the existing simple listing-type reduction measures and qualitative evaluation standards to quantitative reduction measures and evaluation standards reflecting regional characteristics. Research design, data and methodology: The small-scale environmental impact assessment system in Korea was introduced and implemented in August 2000, but it has a problem that it cannot guarantee implementation due to the large proportion of qualitative reduction measures for each evaluation item. Therefore, when preparing a small-scale environmental impact assessment, research was conducted on how to improve the existing simple listing-type reduction measures and qualitative evaluation standards to quantitative reduction measures and evaluation standards reflecting regional characteristics. Results: As a result of the analysis of qualitative and quantitative factors, the arithmetic sum of the qualitative factors of the total six projects is 160, accounting for 80% of the total number of reduction measures, and the quantitative factors are 40, accounting for 20%. Among them, the number of qualitative reduction measures reached 97.4% for animal and plant items, and more than 90% for air quality, noise and vibration, and eco-friendly resource circulation items. Conclusions: Therefore, it is necessary to avoid establishing qualitative reduction measures and set quantitative measures as the basis, but to specify the specifications, size, and installation location related to the reduction measures, and to calculate the numerical reduction efficiency.

  • As a background for qualitative research, the concept of bricolage is very common in the North America. As a movement of art area, because, it has characteristics of criticality and existence which is very close to the definitions of qualitative research. However, regardless of recent rapid wide-spread of qualitative research with the world trend of research methodology, it is very unusual that scholars are rarely discussing on the concept of bricolage in South Korea. In literature review, scholars conceptualize bricolage in literature, art, and so on except qualitative research field. Thus, I realize that it is necessary to discuss the concept of bricolage in qualitative research. Through it, scholars will understand more about the definition of qualitative research. Accordingly, I try to prove the thesis 'qualitative research is bricolage' in this article. In conclusion, scholars commonly define qualitative research to involve the meanings of 'reflection', 'understanding', 'deconstruction', and 'reconstruction' and illustrate also the concepts of bricolage in a praxis of interpretation and understanding with getting together of rigorousness, complexity, and criticality. I realize that these notions are very close to each other in this study.
