In this paper a novel medium access control mechanism is investigated as a means to support real-time services. The primary goal is to provide constant-bit-rate voice call services to pairs of autonomous mobile nodes operating in ad hoc networks. Here, a time-slot reservation based MAC is considered to provide real-time voice calls and a new MAC called the time-slot reservation coordination function(TRCF) is presented. In addition to this isochronous type MAC protocol development, the proposed protocol is modeled using a Markov chain in order to predict its behavior. The performance of TRCF is analytically derived and the performance measures such as average wait time taken for a call connection and throughput are obtained.

Medium access control is critical in wireless networks for efficient spectrum utilization. In this paper, we introduce a novel collision resolution method based on the technique of known interference cancellation, and propose a new MAC protocol named as CR-MAC, in which AP tries to decode all the collided data packets by combining partial retransmissions and known interference cancellation. As the collided transmissions are fully utilized, less retransmission is required, especially in a crowded network. The NS-2simulation and MATLAB numerical results show that, under various network settings, CR-MAC performs much better than the IEEE 802.11 DCF in terms of the aggregation throughput and the expected packet delay.

In multihop routed ad hoc networks, the conventional store-and-forward delivery has been used. However, we may ask a question: "Is the store-and-forward delivery still the best?" This paper presents a pipeline-through MAC (PT-MAC) protocol for ad hoc networks, in which nodes have two 3-channel interfaces in order to use limited radio resources efficiently and improve network performance. The proposed protocol reduces end-to-end delay significantly in multihop routed transmission by exploiting a novel pipeline-through technique rather than using the conventional store-and-forward. This results in improved network performance without increasing control overhead. Our extensive performance study shows that the proposed PT-MAC shows 20-40 percent shorter end-to-end delay and 25-55 percent better goodput compared to the IEEE 802.11 DCF with two 3-channel interfaces.

In this paper, we propose a new contention window control algorithm to increase TCP performance in wireless multi-hop networks. The new contention window control algorithm is suggested to reduce the hidden and exposed terminal problems of wireless multi-hop networks. Most of packet drops in wireless multi-hop networks results from hidden and exposed terminal problems, not from collisions. However, in normal DCF algorithm a failed user increases its contention window exponentially, thus it reduces the success probability of fined nodes. This phenomenon causes burst data transmissions in a particular node that already was successful in packet transmission, because the success probability increases due to short contention window. However, other nodes that fail to transmit packet data until maximum retransmission attempts try to set up new routing path configuration in network layer, which cause TCP performance degradation and restrain seamless data transmission. To solve these problems, the proposed algorithm increases the number of back-of retransmissions to increase the success probability of MAC transmission, and fixes the contention window at a predetermined value. By using ns-2 simulation for the chain and grid topology, we show that the proposed algorithm enhances the TCP performance.

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol standard, DCF(CSMA/CA), is originally designed to ensure the fair channel access between mobile nodes sharing the local wireless channel. It has been, however, revealed that some misbehavior nodes transmit more data than other nodes through artificial means in hot spot area spreaded rapidly. The misbehavior nodes may modify the internal process of their MAC protocol or interrupt the MAC procedure of normal nodes to achieve more data transmission. This problem has been referred to as a selfish node problem and almost literatures has proposed methods of analyzing the MAC procedures of all mobile nodes to detect the selfish nodes. However, these kinds of protocol analysis methods is not effective at detecting all kinds of selfish nodes enough. This paper address this problem of detecting selfish node using Tsallis-Entropy which is a kind of statistical method. Tsallis-Entropy is a criteria which can show how much is the density or deviation of a probability distribution. The proposed algorithm which operates at a AP node of wireless LAN extracts the probability distribution of data interval time for each node, then compares the one with a threshold value to detect the selfish nodes. To evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm, simulation experiments are performed in various wireless LAN environments (congestion level, how selfish node behaviors, threshold level) using ns2. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher successful detection rate.

We define the incomplete medium sharing system as a multi-channel shared medium communication system where any types of constraints are imposed to the set of channels that may be allocated to any transmitter-receiver node pair. A set of distributed MAC schemes are proposed, all of which are based on the CSMA/CA scheme employed in IEEE 802. 11 WLAN standards. Distributed MAC schemes are proposed in three different forms, which can be differentiated by the number and the location of back-off timers; that is, (1) one timer for all queues destined for different receiver nodes, (2) multiple timers at individual transmission queues, (3) multiple timers for individual channels. Through an extensive set of computer simulations, the performances of the proposed MAC schemes show that the MAC scheme with timers at individual transmission queues outperform the others in terms of throughput and delay for most cases considered. The complexity of the proposed schemes is also compared, and the first scheme obviously turned out to be the simplest, and the complexity of the second and third schemes depends on the number of receiver nodes and the number of channels, respectively.
we present more efficient method of a medium access for real-time ubiquitous sensor networks. Proposed MAC protocol is like the randomized CSMA/CA protocol, but unlike previous legacy protocols, it does not use a time-varying contention window from which a node randomly picks a transmission slot. To reduce the latency for the delivery of event reports from sensor nodes, we carefully decide to select a fixed-size contention window with non-uniform probability distribution of transmitting in each slot. We show that the proposed method can offer up to several times latency reduction compared to legacy of IEEE 802.11 as the size of the sensor network scales up to 256 nodes using a widely-used network simulation package, NS-2. We finally show that proposed MAC scheme comes close to meet bounds on the best latency being achieved by a decentralized CSMA-based MAC protocol for real-time ubiquitous sensor networks which is sensitive to latency.
