  • SHACAL-2 is a 256-bit block cipher with up to 512 bits of key length based on the hash function SHA-2. It was submitted to the the NESSIE project and was recommended as one of the NESSIE selections. In this paper, we present two types of related-key attacks called the related-key differential-(non)linear and the related-key rectangle attacks, and we discuss the security of SHACAL-2 against these two types of attacks. Using the related-key differential-nonlinear attack, we can break SHACAL-2 with 512-bit keys up to 35 out of its 64 rounds, and using the related-key rectangle attack, we can break SHACAL-2 with 512-bit keys up to 37 rounds.

  • A low power SRAM using supply voltage charge recycling (SVCR-SRAM) scheme is proposed. It divides into two SRAM cell blocks and supplies two different powers. A supplied power is $V_{DD}$ and $V_{DD}/2$. The other is $V_{DD}/2$ and GND. When N-bit cells are accessed, the charge used in N/2-bit cells with VDD and $V_{DD}/2$ is recycled in the other N/2-bit cells with $V_{DD}/2$ and GND. The SVCR scheme is used in the power consuming parts which bit line, data bus, word line, and SRAM cells to reduce dynamic power. The other parts of SRAM use $V_{DD}$ and GND to achieve high speed. Also, the SVCR-SRAM results in reducing leakage power of SRAM cells due to the body-effect. A 64K-bit SRAM ($8K{\times}8$bits) is implemented in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. It saves 57.4% write power and 27.6% read power at $V_{DD}=1.8V$ and f=50MHz.

  • In this paper, we propose a highly secure technique to hide confidential data in image pixels using a quadruple encryption techniques. In the proposed technique, the boundary surface where the image outline exists and the flat surface with little change in pixel values are investigated. At the boundary of the image, in order to preserve the characteristics of the boundary, one bit of confidential data that has been multiply encrypted is spatially encrypted again in the LSB of the pixel located at the boundary to hide the confidential data. At the boundary of an image, in order to preserve the characteristics of the boundary, one bit of confidential data that is multiplely encrypted is hidden in the LSB of the pixel located at the boundary by spatially encrypting it. In pixels that are not on the border of the image but on a flat surface with little change in pixel value, 2-bit confidential data that is multiply encrypted is hidden in the lower 2 bits of the pixel using location-based encryption and spatial encryption techniques. When applying the proposed technique to hide confidential data, the image quality of the stego-image is up to 49.64dB, and the amount of confidential data hidden increases by up to 92.2% compared to the existing LSB method. Without an encryption key, the encrypted confidential data hidden in the stego-image cannot be extracted, and even if extracted, it cannot be decrypted, so the security of the confidential data hidden in the stego-image is maintained very strongly. The proposed technique can be effectively used to hide copyright information in general commercial images such as webtoons that do not require the use of reversible data hiding techniques.

  • The H.264/AVC standard achieves higher coding efficiency than previous video coding standards with the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique which selects the best coding mode and reference frame for each macroblock. As a result, the complexity of the encoder have been significantly increased. In this paper, a fast intra-mode decision algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational load of intra-mode search, which is based on the inverse tree-structure edge prediction algorithm. First, we obtained the dominant edge for each $4{\times}4$ block from local edge information, then the RDO process is only performed by the mode which corresponds to dominant edge direction. Then, for the $8{\times}8$ (or $16{\times}16$) block stage, the dominant edge is calculated from its four $4{\times}4$ (or $16{\times}16$) blocks' dominant edges without additional calculation and the RDO process is also performed by the mode which is related to dominant edge direction. Experimental results show that proposed scheme can significantly improve the speed of the intra prediction with a negligible loss in the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and a little increase of bits.

  • This study proposes a method to estimate drilling torque during ground boring with an aid of electrical energy required for rotating a boring-auger. Ground boring is commonly used in geotechnical engineering such as preboring precast pile installation, soil-cement grouting, ground exploration and so forth. In order to understand the correlation between required electrical energy to rotate the boring auger and the drilling torque, a small laboratory apparatus was designed and a pilot study was performed. The apparatus rotates common drill bits of $D=5{\sim}25mm$ in CBR specimens. The velocity of a bit is 19 RPM and predefined using a reduction gear which connects a main rotation axis to a 25 Watts AC electrical motor shaft. In the middle of drilling the motor current increments and the drilling torque were measured and the correlation between the current and the torque was obtained through linear square fits. Based on the correlation the acquired motor current during drilling was applied to predict the drilling torque in consequent testing and the prediction results were compared to the measured torque. The comparison leads a conclusion that the motor current during drilling using electrical power may be a good indicator to estimate/determine strength characteristics of the ground.
