Hydrogenation and Electrochemical Characteristics of Amorphous-nanostructured Mg-based Alloys

  • In the development of new hydrogen absorbing materials for a next generation of metal hydride electrodes for rechargeable batteries, metastable Mg-Ni-based compounds find currently special attention. Amor phous-nanocrystalline $Mg_{63}Ni_{30}Y_7$ and $Mg_{50}Ni_{30}Y_{20}$ alloys were produced by mechanical alloying and melt-spinning and characterized by means of XRD, TEM and DSC. On basis of mechanically alloyed Mg-Ni-Y powders, complex hydride electrodes were fabricated and their electrochemical behaviour in 6M KOH (pH=14,8) was investigated. The electrodes made from $Mg_{63}Ni_{30}Y_7$ powders, which were prepared under use of a SPEX shaker mill, with a major fraction of nanocrystalline phase reveal a higher electrochemical activity far hydrogen reduction and a higher maximum discharge capacity (247 mAh/g) than the electrodes from alloy powder with predominantly amorphous microstructure (216 mAh/g) obtained when using a Retsch planetary ball mill at low temperatures. Those discharge capacities are higher that those fur nanocrystalline $Mg_2Ni$ electrodes. However, the cyclic stability of those alloy powder electrodes was low. Therefore, fundamental stability studies were performed on $Mg_{63}Ni_{30}Y_7$ and $Mg_{50}Ni_{30}Y_{20}$ ribbon samples in the as-quenched state and after cathodic hydrogen charging by means of anodic and cathodic polarisation measurements. Gradual oxidation and dissolution of nickel governs the anodic behaviour before a passive state is attained. A stabilizing effect of higher fractions of yttrium in the alloy on the passivation was detected. During the cathodic hydrogen charging process the alloys exhibit a change in the surface state chemistry, i.e. an enrichment of nickel-species, causing preferential oxidation and dissolution during subsequent anodization. The effect of chemical pre-treatments in 1% HF and in $10\;mg/l\;YCl_3/1%\;H_2O_2$ solution on the surface degradation processes was investigated. A HF treatment can improve their anodic passivation behavior by inhibiting a preferential nickel oxidation-dissolution at low polarisation, whereas a $YCl_3/H_2O_2$ treatment has the opposite effect. Both pre-treatment methods lead to an enhancement of cathodically induced surface degradation processes.

The Effect of Carrier in CO2 Reforming of CH4 to Syngas over Ni-based catalysts

  • The activities of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$, Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst for $CO_2$ reforming of $CH_4$ were investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor under atmospheric condition. Catalyst characterization using XRD, TEM, SEM, BET analysis were also conducted. The catalytic activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst has relatively superior to that of Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst. The good activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst seems to depend on reduced $Ni^{\circ}$ phases of NiO($\rightarrow$ Ni + O), $LaNiO_3$($\rightarrow$ $Ni+La_2O_3$), Ni crystalline phases, and decoration of Ni phases by lanthanum species is also an important factor. Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst due to surface acidity resulted in the deposition of wisker type and encapsulate carbon on the surface of catalyst, but Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst did not show carbon on the surface of catalyst up to 8.5hr reaction.

열형 적외선 센싱소자용 Mn-Ni-Co계 써미스터 박막 특성 평가 (Evaluations of Mn-Ni-Co type thermistor thin film for thermal infrared sensing element)

  • rf magnetron sputtering법을 이용하여 Mn-Ni-Co계 써미스터 박막을 증착하였다. $300^{\circ}C$$Ar/O_2$ = 10/0에서, cubic spinel 상형성이 이루어졌으며 공정가스에 산소 첨가 시, cubic spinel 상은 열처리를 통해서도 형성되지 않았다. 써미스터 박막은 Mn, Ni, Co 성분 외 다른 이종 성분은 포함되어 있지 않았다. 써미스터 박막에 대한 적외선 반사 특성을 분석으로 증착된 박막은 일정 각도로 입사되는 적외선에 대해 비교적 높은 반사율을 가짐을 관찰할 수 있었다. DI water : $HNO_3$: HCI=60 : 30 : 10 vo1%에서 써미스터 박막의 식각 속도는 약 63 nm/min였다. 박막 써미스터의 B상수는 약 3500 K였으며 TCR은 약 -3.95%/K였다 전압감도는 약 108.5 V/W였으며 NEP와 specific detectivity는 각각 $5.1\times 10^{-7}$ W/$Hz^{-1/2}$ $0.2\times 10^6$cm $Hz^{1/2}$/W였다.

Electrochemical Properties and Thermal Stability of LiNi0.8Co0.15 Al0.05O2-LiFePO4 Mixed Cathode Materials for Lithium Secondary Batteries

  • We prepared various $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2-LiFePO_4$ mixed-cathode electrodes by changing the content of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ and $LiFePO_4$ used, and we analyzed the electrochemical characteristics of the cathodes. We found that the reversible specific capacity of the cathodes increased and that the capacity retention ratios of the cathodes decreased during cycling as the content of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ increased. Conversely, we found that although the reversible specific capacity of the cathodes decreased because of the material composition, the cycle property of the cathodes increased when the $LiFePO_4$ content increased. We analyzed the thermal stability of the $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2-LiFePO_4$ mixed-material cathodes by differential scanning calorimetry and found that it increased as the $LiFePO_4$ content increased.

Laser 열처리를 이용한 FeMn/NiFe 박막의 자화 반전 (Local Magnetization Reversal of FeMn/NiFe Films Using Laser Annealing)

  • Ta(5 nm)/NiFe(11 nm)/FeMn(16 nm) Ta(5 nm)과 Ta(5 nm)/NiFe(11 run)/FeMn(16 nm)/NiFe(7 nm)/Ta(5 nm) 다층박막구조를 제작하여, Laser의 power, 조사 위치, 자장의 방향에 따라 자기저항(MR)비와 교환결합력(H$_{ex}$) 자기적 특성을 연구하였다. Laser 열처리는 power를 440 mW까지 증가시키면서 FeMn/NiFe 이중박막을 15분 씩 Laser로 조사하여, 200 mW에서부터 음의 자기장에서 자기저항곡선의 피크가 발생하기 시작하였다. 400 mW까지 증가시키면서 양의 자기장에서 자기저항곡선의 MR비와 H$_{ex}$:가 각각 0.9%에서 0.1%로, 87 Oe에서 76 Oe로 감소하였고, 음의 자기장 피크에서는 MR비와 H$_{ex}$가 모두 증가하였다. 또한 NiFe/FeMn/NiFe삼중박막에서도 같은 결과를 얻었다. 300 mA로 laser열처리한 면적을 증가시켰을 때 자기저항곡선이 positive 피크는 감소하고 negative 피크는 증가하였다. 이러한 Laser 열처리효과에 의해 결과적으로 교환결합된 박막구조의 국소적 자화반전을 가능하게 하였다.

실온 펄스도금법을 이용한 STS 316L 표면의 Ni 도금 저가형욕 연구 (Study of Ni-coating on 316L Stainless Steel by Pulse Electroplating in Various Bath Conditions at Room Temperature)

  • Ni coating was carried out by pulse plating at room temperature. So, experimental conditions for Ni-coating were based on Watt's bath, and new additives(propionic acid) were introduced in the Watt's bath electrolyte as $H_3$$BO_3$ alternatives. By adding propionic acid, coating layer demonstrated a good adhesion and uniformity without special pre-treatment of the 316L stainless steel at room temperature. With a decrease of amount of propionic acid and applied average current density, cathode current efficiency increased. Also, edge effect was decreased with decreasing a peak current and increasing a pulse frequency in the same bath condition. It was found that the optimum condition for Ni coating was a current density of 10~20mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at below 500 mA peak current in the $5m\ell/\ell$ propionic acid solution.

The Electrochemical Migration Phenomenon of the Ni-Cr Seed Layer of Sputtered FCCL

  • As the demand for fine-pitch FPCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board) increases, so do the number of applications of sputtered FCCL (Flexible Copper Clad Laminate). Furthermore, as the width between the circuit patterns decreases, greater defects are observed in the migration phenomenon. In this study we observed changes in ion migration in real circuit-pattern width using sputtered FCCL. We found that as the applied voltage and residue thickness of the NiCr seeds increase, ion migration occurs faster. If the NiCr seed layer thickens due to a high cathode power and long deposition time while being sputtered, the NiCr will form a residue that quickly becomes a factor for incurring ion migration.

엘니뇨/라니냐 정의에 대한 제언 (A Suggestion for Definition of El Niño/La Niña)

  • KMA is operationally monitoring El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a events, which have tremendous impacts on global climate. Many scientific studies have used to define onset of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a events based on the moving average and persistency of SST indices, and KMA has adopted such definition. Though the definition has been widely accepted, in the operational aspect there is a critical problem to use moving average and condition for the persistence. Because the future values for the SST indices cannot be used in the operational monitoring, the onset timing in El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a can be significantly delayed. We suggest here an appropriate definition of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a events in the operational aspect. Instead of using the moving average and the condition for the persistence, the onset is defined based on NINO3.4 SST during last 3 months. In order to compare the new definition with the current KMA definition, we applied them to recent 60-years SST data. It is clear that the new definition can declare the onset timing of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a several months earlier than that of the KMA definition. It suggest that the new definition is more appropriate to the operational monitoring on El Ni$\tilde{n}$o and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a.
