Detection of Superior Markers for Polymerase Chain Reaction Diagnosis of Breast Cancer Micrometastasis in Sentinel Lymph Nodes

  • Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women around the world, and mortality is primarily caused by micro-metastatic disease. The complex mechanisms of breast cancer invasion and metastasis are intrinsically related to the malignant cell type so that early detection of micro-metastases can help prolongation of survival for patient. The aim of the present research work was evaluation of the expression status of mammoglobin protein as a candidate molecular marker in the negative sentinel lymph node (SLN). Fifty tumor specimens, and 50 normal adjacent breast tissue samples from the same patients were selected on the basis of having more than 10% tumor content for RNA extraction from SLNs. Tumor samples and normal adjacent breast tissue were archived in the form of frozen fresh tissue in liquid nitrogen. Real-time PCR was performed on a Bioner life express gradient thermal cycler system. Mammoglobin gene overexpression in breast cancer metastasis was investigated. Single marker results were mammaglobin 66.7% and CK19 50.0%, with 58.3% for the two in combination. Due to improved outcome with at least 3 genes (83.3%), it seems, triple marker evaluation will be most likely useful for detecting micro-metastases instead of studying separate genes.

A Study on Recognition of Food Calories of College Students in Chungnam (충남지역 대학생의 식품의 열량 인지도에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted among the university students to evaluate the recognition of food calories through questionnaire. The subjects were 88 male and 230 female students in Chungnam. 67.4% of the subjects experienced nutrition education, 50.8% and 86.6% of them recognized daily calorie requirement and definition of calorie, respectively. There were significant differences in response rate about frequency of supper, experience and satisfaction of weight control, degree of knowledge of calorie, and need of nutrition education among the subjects with experience of nutrition education and recognition of daily calorie requirement and calorie definition. The calories of 14 food items (29.17%) were low recognized in subjects with nutrition education than in subjects without nutrition education. The results also show that the calories of 38 food items (79.17%) were highly recognized than the actual clories of them in total subjects. Especially, vegetables, fruits, and oils were highly recognized. The daily calorie intakes in the subjects recognizing calorie definition were lower than in the other subjects(p<0.05). In conclusion, university students highly recognized than actual food calories, and there was significant difference in degree of recognition with various factors, such as nutrition education, knowledge of calorie, and weight control, and therefore showing a strong need of proper nutrition education about food calories.

A Study on Employment Preparation of Graduating Senior in the Department affiliated with Physical Education (체육계열 4학년 학생의 취업준비행동 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was trying to figure out the effective employment guidance plan through employment preparation of graduating senior in department affiliated with physical education and recent situation. This study was compared to 2013 Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey(GOMS). Data were collected from 164 graduating seniors in the department affiliated with physical education from 5 institutions of a 4-year university located in Gyeonggi-do, Seoul, and ChungChong-do by convenience sampling. For the data analysis, a descriptive statistic, frequency analysis, and one-samples t-test were conducted. Graduating seniors participating in school employment programs had a lower rate but the average rate of participation in career & employment classes and vocational test was more than 50%. They were satisfied with university education and career support but employment program and welfare facilities are in need of improvement. Furthermore, graduating seniors have national and private certificates related to major. Finally, they have very low participation rates in youth employment policies of government. Based on the results, the effective job placement guideline for the department affiliated with physical education is needed.

Antioxidant activity and inhibitory effect of melatonin and the relative indole compounds on perilla oil oxidation (멜라토닌 및 관련 인돌 화합물의 산화방지능과 들기름 산화에 대한 억제 효과)

  • Melatonin, known as a powerful wide-spectrum antioxidant, is consumed as a food supplement in some countries, but its applicability as an antioxidant additive was not yet studied. Therefore, we evaluated the antioxidant activity of melatonin by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and ORAC assays as well as its ability to inhibit perilla oil oxidation. The activities of four other related indoles were also compared. Melatonin showed the highest antioxidant activity (mmol trolox equivalent per mol indole, mmol TE) in ORAC (2,159) assay, but a low antioxidant activity in DPPH (0.63), ABTS (91), and FRAP (764) assays, whereas serotonin showed an opposite result. Addition of 1% (w/w) melatonin to perilla oil extended the induction period of oxidation up to about 2 times ($2.93{\pm}0.47h$) compared to that of control ($1.43{\pm}0.26h$) in the Rancimat assay, corresponding to almost 50% of the ability of butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT). Tryptamine was the most effective indole that inhibited perilla oil oxidation ($9.53{\pm}1.43h$).

Selection of Superior Sorghum Accession by Assessing Agronomic Characters and Biological Activity (수수 수집종의 농업적 형질 및 생리활성 분석을 통한 우수계통 선발)

  • Background: Sorghum is a major cereal food crop used in many parts of the world. It has been grown on a subsistence level by farmers, under various conditions of environmental stresses in the semi-arid tropics of Africa and Asia. This plant has received significant attention because of its ability to reduce cholesterol in the blood, and its anti-dementia, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. It is possible to develop a functional and commercially viable sorghum variety by using superior cultivars of sorghum. The objective of this study was to build a database of superior sorghum accession. Methods and Results: We used 250 sorghum accessions collected from different geographical bioregions in Korea. We determined various agronomic characters including germination rate and ear length of these accessions. To determine the antioxidant capacity, we measured the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity, 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)-diammonium salt radical scavenging activity, total phenolic contents, and total flavonoid contents. Accession 189 showed higher germination (> 80%) than the other accessions. Higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity was observed in 11-SB-078 ($RC_{50}$; $1.89{\pm}2.88{\mu}g/m{\ell}$), and higher 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)-diammonium salt radical scavenging activity was recorded in 11-SB-116 ($RC_{50}$; $35.48{\pm}2.42{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) than in the other accessions. The ear length ranged from 15 cm to 48 cm, the total phenolic contents ranged from $3mg{\cdot}GAE/g$ to $77mg{\cdot}GAE/g$, and total flavonoid contents ranged from $0.09mg{\cdot}QE/g$ to $1.07mg{\cdot}QE/g$. Conclusions: Among 250 sorghum accessions, we selected 10 with both superior agronomic characters and highly functional food quality.

Preparation of Calcium-fortified Soymilk and in Vitro Digestion Properties of Its Protein and Calcium (칼슘강화 두유의 제조 및 단백질과 칼슘의 체외 소화특성)

  • The present study was attempted to preprare calcium-fortified soymilk using proteases to improve calcium intolerance of soymilk protein and to evaluate its nutritional properties. The protease from Bacillus polymyxa was chosen as an enzyme source because it produced the least bitter taste and calcium-aggregation of soymilk among various enzymes. The optimum treatment time was 10 minutes at $50^{\circ}C$ for the best result. In vitro protein digestibility of calcium-fortified soymilks was comparable with that of control soymilk. Calcium in the digested soymilks was mostly in the ionic form and the amount of ionic calcium increased in accordance with the amount of fortified calcium in soymilk. This suggests that fortified calcium in the soymilk is bioavailable.

Physicochemical Properties of Jeung-pyun (Fermented Rice Cake) as Influenced by Processing Conditions (제조 조건에 따른 증편의 품질)

  • Changes were evaluated in chemical and textural properties of Jeung-pyun (fermented rice cake) altered by the particle size of rice flour, amount of added Tak-ju (Korean traditional unrefined liquor) and sucrose, fermentation time and temperature, and steaming time. Particle size of polished rice flour did not affect the volume expansion during fermentation of rice dough by Tak-ju. The maximum expanded volume was noted in the dough, containing 20% sucrose (rice flour vs sucrose = 5 : 1, w/w), fermented at $35^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. Any volume expansion was not occurred in rice dough without sucrose. The highest value of reducing power and gelatinization degree were observed in the rice dough with Tak-ju (rice flour vs Tak-ju = 2 : 1, w/v), while the lowest blue value was revealed in that case. Steaming followed after fermentation made the smaller volume of bulk by $45{\sim}50%$ of the initial volume be showed just after fermentation. Jeung-pyun prepared under the conditions could give maximum expanded volume by fermentation showed the best overall quality by sensory and textual properties.

Survey on Personal Medicines in Cheju Island (제주도 민간요법에 관한 조사연구)

  • The purpose is to inspect the personal medicines in Cheju island that are used traditionally and to get their characteristics. The subjectives are 39 Cheju people, men 10, women 29, who were horned, grown up in Cheju and agreed with this study. The ranges of age are 10 persons(m : 1, w: 9) over 40 less 50 years old, 14(m : 7, w : 7) over 50 less 60, 5(m : 1, w : 4) over 60 less 70, 6(m : 0, w : 6) over 70 less 80, and 4(m : 1, w : 3) over 80. The average age is 64.5 years old. The method to collect the data is 20 structured opening questionaires that are based on references. The duration to collect datas is 11days from 4th, Aprill 1997 to 14th, Aprill 1997. The workers who are trainned the interview methods went their villages and got answers after explaining the purpose and contents to them. Somtimes they used to record the answers. The analysis was identified the subjectives to four regions of Cheju, arranged answers with items, rearranged the same answers, counted with number and percentage. And classified the materials and characteristics. The results of this study are followed: The things that is used as personal medicines are the effects through experiences ans misteries that have hand down by word of mouth, even though they are not scientific. People used the materials arround their circumference. It is an accumulation of experiences. The ways used in eating, doing acupuncture or sting, exposing to smoke, wheedling, fixing after pounding. Almost materials are plants. Mugwort is effective in fever, gastritis, hemorrhoid, diarrhea, edematous hands or feet and dermatitis. Citron and Arrowroot in fever, gastritis. Seeds of Pumpkin in indigestive, hemorrhoid, edematous hands or feet. Gallic in fever, diarrhea, frostbite, dermatitis, and toothache. Motherwort in diarrhea, gastritis. Radish juice in indigestive, jaundice. Bean paste in burn, wound. Acupuncture in fever, gastritis, indigestive, back pain, edematous hands or feet. Sting as similar with it in fever, indigestive, edematous hands or feet. Cigarrette in hemorrhoid, wound, toothache. Cowstools in edematous hands or feet, wound. Sault is usded a lot in fever, gastritis, indigestive, hemorrhoid, uneffective voiding, edematous hands or feet, dermatitis, having a boil around the mouth, toothache, and eye disease. Japanese Parsley in fever, gastritis. Egg Apple in diarrhea, edematous hands or feet, frostbite. And Wild Chrysanthemum is effective in jaundice. In the conclusion, people used the things arround. A things is effective in several symptoms. If these are not effective, they would used the magic as god's anger. As locally, they used the grasses and fruits in the middle of Mt. Halla and seafood on the sea village.

Multi-Band Antenna Design by Controlling Characteristic of Third Order Mode (고차 모드 주파수 특성 제어 다중 대역 안테나)

  • This paper presents a new method for designing a dual-band WIFI antenna using the third-order harmonic mode of a monopole antenna whose first-order mode operates at the low frequency band of WIFI. As analysing the current distribution of the third-order mode of this monopole antenna, the strongest point of electric field can be found. Then by attaching a stub at this point, the resonant frequency of the stub radiator can be adjusted from the third-order mode of the monopole antenna into the high frequency band of WIFI and the input impedance at this resonant frequency can be controlled with the width of the branch, without affecting the low frequency band of WIFI (the first-order mode of the monopole antenna). The compact dual-band antenna is designed at the size of an USB(universal serial bus) dongle and the bandwidth covers 600 MHz(2.3~3 GHz) at 2 GHz and 1 GHz(4.9~5.9 GHz) at 5 GHz under -10 dB which is satisfied with WLAN frequency. Efficiency of proposed antenna achieves over 50 % at WLAN frequency.

Dietary Intake, Serum Lipids, Iron Index and Antioxidant Status by Percent Body Fat of Young Females (여대생의 체지방률에 따른 식이섭취와 혈중지질농도, 철분지표 및 항산화능)

  • The aim of this study was to measure and compare nutrient intake, anthropometric measurements and serum indices by percent body fat as one of the index of obesity degree in female college students. Additionally we attempted to investigate percentile distribution of fat free mass index (FFMI) and fat mass index (FMI) for developing reference values for these two parameters. The subjects were 91 female college students who were classified to 4 groups according to the percentile of percent body fat (Group1: 25 th < percentile of percent body fat, Group 2 : 25 th ${\le}$ percentile of percent body fat < 50 th, Group 3 : 50 th ${\le}$ percentile of percent body fat < 75 th, Group 4 : percentile of percent body fat ${\ge}$ 75 th). The mean percent body fat and body mass index were 28.2%, $20.5 kg/m^2$ respectively. The mean energy intake was 1707 kcal(81% of KDRIs) and vitamin C, folate, Ca and Zn intake were 73.9%, 54.7%, 79.6%, 97.5% of KDRIs respectively. Most nutrient intake (energy, carbohydrate, cholesterol, fatty acid, Ca, Fe) of G4 was lower than that of G1, G2 and G3. Serum HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly lower in G4 than G1, G2, G3 and it tended to increase as percent body fat decreased. LDL/HDL, A1 of G4 were significantly the highest among the 4 groups and increased as percent body fat increased. The mean fat free mass index and fat mass index were $14.5 kg/m^2$, $6.0 kg/m^2$ respectively. The criteria of sarcopenic obesity which has been defined as under 25 th percentile of FFMI and below 75 th percentile of FMI were shown $12.8 kg/m^2$, $8.2 kg/m^2$ respectively in this study. In conclusion, we should continue to more systematically research on the studies of new obesity measurement which includes FFMI and FMI as one of the variables. And the public education for weight control that emphasizes both the understanding of body composition and the importance of nutrition balance is also required.
