The Effects of PM10 on the Hospital Admission of Patients with Respiratory Disease in Seoul, Korea (서울지역 미세먼지가 호흡기계 질환으로 입원한 환자에 미치는 영향)

  • This cohort study aimed to identify the effects of daily PM10 exposure on the hospital admission of patients with respiratory diseases, during the nine-year period (2002-2010), in Seoul, Korea. The research subjects were 13,974 patients who had been hospitalized with respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and pneumonia. During the follow-up period, an increase of 10 ug/m3 in PM10 under the threshold of 50 ug/m3 of PM10 led to hospital admission in 1.38% of the age group younger than 15 years, 1.62% in those 65 years or older, 2.87% in patients 75 years or older and in 1.50% of pneumonia patients, 1.51% of COPD patients, and 1.55% of pneumonia and asthma patients. Under the threshold of 80 ug/m3 of PM10, there was a 3.71% increase in new patients admitted in the age group 65 years or older and 4.25% in those at least 75 years old. Our study found that high PM10 was associated with increased risk of admission of respiratory patients, especially in the elderly. People who already have a respiratory disease should refrain from exposure to particulate matter when there is a high concentration of PM10, especially older patients.

Influence of Menopause on Breast Cancer in South Korean Adult Women (한국 성인 여성의 폐경 여부가 유방암에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate breast cancer its menopause in South Korean adult women using data from the seventh Korea national health and nutrition examination survey(KNHANES VII-2) 2017. The subjects were 3,414 people in total. The Data were analyzed by frequency, ${\chi}^2$ test and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS complex samples Win 25 program. According to the age of the subjects, breast cancer was 1.7% higher in women aged 50~59 years than aged 40~49 years, and 1.7% was significantly more frequent in women who had no drinking frequency than in almost everyday. Menopausal age was significantly higher in women under 44 years of age with breast cancer than in those over 50 years of age. According to menopause, postmenopausal breast cancer was 1.7% more than before menopause. When adjusted for age and alcohol drinking frequency, premenopausal adult women in Korea had significantly lower breast cancer frequency by 0.03 compared with postmenopausal women. Based on these results, it is important to pay attention to the management of breast cancer in young women aged 44 years or younger and multidisciplinary efforts are needed to reduce the ever-increasing prevalence of breast cancer.

Anthropometric Measurements and Biochemical Nutritional Status of the Older Residents (50 years and over) in Andong Area (2) (안동주변 농촌지역 50세 이상 주민의 신체계측치 및 생화학적 영양상태에 관한 연구 (2))

  • This study aimed to assess the health status based on the anthropometric and biochemical measurements of middle-aged and elderly people living in Andong area. The subjects were 1,384 people (532 males, 852 females) aged 50 years and over (average 62.7 years). The mean anthropometric values for males and females were heights of 163.7 and 151.5 cm; weights 63.6 and 57.3 kg; body mass index (BMI) 23.6 and $24.9kg/m^2$; body fat 21.8 and 31.8%, respectively. Height and weight were lower, however, waist circumference (in female) and BMI were higher than those of the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS). Obesity incidences of male and female subjects were 28.7% and 47.3% by BMI; 25.8% and 50.8% by % body fat; and 15.6% and 80.9% by waist circumference, respectively. Also, abdominal adiposity was very severe in female subjects of 50s. The mean biochemical measurements of male and female were as follows: systolic and diastolic blood pressure 136.9, 83.8 mmHg and 133.6, 82.5 mmHg; hemoglobin (Hb) 14.3 and 13.0 g/dL; hematocrit (Ht) 44.7 and 39.8%; blood albumin 4.15 and 4.04 g/dL; total-cholesterol 170.0 and 183.1 mg/dL; HDL-cholesterol 43.6 and 42.7 mg/dL; fasting blood glucose 96.7 and 93.0 mg/dL, respectively. Also, the prevalence of biochemically abnormal subjects according to each cut-off point of biochemical measurements were analyzed. The results for male and female were; hypertension 58.0% and 47.2%; iron deficient anemia 19.3% and 20.6% by Hb, 7.2% and 11.9% by Ht; hypoalbuminemia 9.8% and 11.7%; diabetes 12.0% and 10.2%; hypercholesterolemia 19.5% and 30.5%, respectively. From those results we found that hypoalbuminemia, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia were prevalent, and obesity in females of 50s, iron-deficient anemia and diabetes in males of 70 years and over were significant health problems in this area. Therefore, it seems to be necessary to examine their health status periodically and provide the appropriate health and nutrition education program, which includes low sodium intake, balanced diet, exercise and weight control, to prevent the occurrence of chronic diseases.

Impact of COVID-19 on Dental Trauma in Korea (국내에서 발생한 치과적 외상에 대한 코로나 바이러스 감염증-19의 영향)

  • The study was conducted to analyze the impacts of COVID-19 on the number of dental trauma patients. Based on the data provided by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service's Healthcare Bigdata Hub, dental trauma which occurred from 2010 to 2020 was analyzed. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the incidence of dental trauma per 100,000 decreased compared to the average Incidence between 2017 to 2019. By age, it decreased by 5.4% (p = 0.017) for 0 - 4 years old, 30.3% (p < 0.001) for 5 - 9 years old, 39.5% (p < 0.001) for 10 - 14 years old, 14.5% (p = 0.002) for 15 - 19 years old, 1.3% for 20 - 29 years old, 0.2% for 40 - 49 years old, 2.7% for 50 - 59 years old, 1.2% for 60 years old or older, but it increased by 2.5% for 30 - 39 years old. Compared monthly, before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 confirmed patients, the number of dental trauma patients dropped sharply. After the outbreak of COVID-19, the incidence of dental trauma decreased significantly for under 20 years old, but the decrease was not significant for 20 years old or older.

Effect of Cure System on the Life-time of Hydrogenated NBR O-ring using Intermittent Compression Stress Relaxation(CSR) (간헐 압축응력 완화를 이용한 가교 구조가 hydrogenated NBR 오링의 수명에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • Intermittent CSR testing was used to investigate the degradation of a hydrogenated NBR(HNBR) O-rings, and also the prediction of its life-time. The cure system of HNBR O-ring was controlled as sulfur cure and peroxide cure system. An intermittent CSR jig was designed taking into consideration the O-ring's environment under use. The testing allowed observation of the effects of friction, heat loss, and stress relaxation by the Mullins effect. Degradation of O-rings by thermal aging was observed between 100 and $120^{\circ}C$. In the temperature range of $100-120^{\circ}C$, O-rings showed linear degradation behavior and satisfied the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy of HNBR-S was about 70.6 kJ/mol. From Arrhenius plots, predicted life-times of HNBR-S O-ring were 31.1 years and 33.7 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. In case of HNBR-P, the activation energy was about 72.1kJ/mol, and predicted life-times were 34.0 years and 36.5 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. The peroxide cure system showed slower degradation rate and higher activation energy than the sulfur cure system.

A Study on Use Behaviors of Books through Circulation Data Analysis in an Academic Library (대학도서관 대출데이터분석을 통한 장서 이용행태 및 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze user behaviors of books in detail based on circulation data in an academic library. It analyzes circulation patterns of books for ten years from 2006 to 2015, which are surprisingly similar every year. Each pattern follows 'Loan books 20/50 rule' that 20% core collection occupies 50% of its circulation every year. This clarifies users' circulation patterns are highly consistent and very expectable. Also, using the cumulative distribution of book age, it defines the half-life of books and suggests the mathematical formula to measure it. Circulation patterns of the whole loan book and core collection for ten years are very different in terms of subjects, user groups, and divisions. This indicates that core collection plays a significant role in analyzing circulation statistics and usage patterns for the efficient collection development in the future.

Analysis of Backstroke 100m Race Management Ability of National Swimmer with Intellectual Disabilities (지적장애 수영 국가대표 선수의 배영 100m 경기운영능력 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the backstroke 100m race management ability of national swimmer with developmental disabilities. As a result of the study, first, he started slow to the first 50m phase and swam fast to the last 100m in 2015, however, he started fast to the first 50m phase and swam slow to the last 100m in 2016-2018. Second, the time of under water increased over the years, the distance and time of under water were the greater, and the speed of under water was the smallest in 2017. Third, the average of the distance during turn was 7.51 m, the time during turn was 4.34 sec, and the speed during turn was 1.73 m/s for four years. Fourth, the stroke efficiency during the first 50m phase increased over the years, and the stroke efficiency during the last 100m phase was greater in 2017. Based on this results, it is expected to be useful for training of swimmer with developmental disabilities.

Fifty Years of Scientific Ocean Drilling (1968-2018): Achievements and Future Direction of K-IODP (해양 과학시추 50년 (1968-2018): 한국의 성과 및 미래 방향)

  • The year 2018 is the $50^{th}$ anniversary of scientific ocean drilling. Nevertheless, we know more about the surface of the moon than the Earth's ocean floor. In other words, there are still no much informations about the Earth interior. Much of what we do know has come from the scientific ocean drilling, providing the systematic collection of core samples from the deep seabed. This revolutionary process began 50 years ago, when the drilling vessel Glomar Challenger sailed into the Gulf of Mexico on August 11, 1968 on the first expedition of the federally funded Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). DSDP followed successively by Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (old IODP), and International Ocean Discovery Program (new IODP). Concerning on the results of scientific ocean drilling, there are two technological innovations and various scientific research results. The one is a dynamic positioning system, enables the drilling vessel to stay fixed in place while drilling and recovering cores in the deep water. Another is the finding of re-entry cone to replace drill bit during the drilling. In addition to technological innovation, there are important scientific results such as confirmation of plate tectonics, reconstruction of earth's history, and finding of life within sediments. New IODP has begun in October, 2013 and will continue till 2023. IODP member countries are preparing for the IODP science plan beyond 2023 and future 50 years of scientific ocean drilling. We as IODP member also need to participate in keeping with the international trend.

Seed Longevity of Rice Germplasm in the National Agrobiodiversity Center (종자은행 보존 벼 유전자원의 생태형별 종자수명)

  • The purpose of this study was to know the seed longevity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) germplasm for effective viability monitoring. The longevity was determined via germination tests of 3,066 accessions of rice germplasm from the National Agrobiodiversity Center, Rural Development Administration, Korea. The rice germplasm accessions have been conserved at a mid-term storage ($4^{\circ}C$, 30% RH) in plastic bottle containing dehydrated (blue) silica-gel and long-term storage ($-18^{\circ}C$, 35% RH) in hermetically sealed metal can on either sides for 25~26.5 years. The final germination percentages of 3,066 rice germplasm accessions of $6.5{\pm}1.0%$ seed moisture content with 94% initial germination stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 26.5 years declined to 47% while at $-18^{\circ}C$ for 25 years maintained high germinability as 93%. Germination time courses, which represent the average performance of rice ecotypes stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and 30% RH, were fitted regression equation, to calculate the time at which germination characteristically declined to 50% ($P_{50}$). These $P_{50}$ values of Indica, Japonica, Javanica and Tongil type in rice were 39.9, 22.9, 25.4 and 31.8 years, respectively. The rice germplasm stored at $4^{\circ}C$ could be clustered in 4 groups using quartile of final germination after 26.5 years storage. The seed longevity ($P_{50}$) of each group was estimated by regression equation of changed germination percentages according to storage periods. The $P_{50}$ values of group I, group II, group III and group IV were 21.1, 23.6, 30.0 and 75.7 years.

Age Structure Analysis of Kaloula borealis (맹꽁이(Kaloula borealis)의 나이구조 분석)

  • Using skeletochronology in the Daejung-eup, Jeju, we determined the age structure of Kaloula borealis. The study was performed during the breed season in June 2009. We measured the snout-vent length(SVL) and body weigth(BW) and analyzed the age structure of 38 male and 58 female frogs. The mean value of SVL is $43.69{\pm}3.44mm$ in males and $46.32{\pm}4.23mm$ in females. The age at first reproduction was estimated to be 2 years of age in males and 3 years in females. The oldest males and females were 8 and 10 years of age, respectively. Therefore, the longevity in this species was estimated to be more than 8 years for males and 10 years for females. So, females live longer than males. Also, this difference between the male and the female in age structure was significant. We estimated the growth curve for Kaloula borealis using von Bertalanffy growth model. The growth coefficient (K) was 0.56 in male and 0.41 in female. The asymptotic size was 46.41 mm in male and 50.22 mm in female.
