  • The paper is focusing on investigating the control characteristics of the baseline controller of 5 MW wind turbine provided by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). The baseline controller consist of two control logics, a maximum power tracking control below the rated wind speed and a constant power control above the rated wind speed. In the low wind speed, the mean generator power for changing the turbulent intensity and the optimal constant is studied through numerical simulations using FAST program. On the other hand, the constant power control logic and the constant control logic are compared in the high wind speed. It is confirmed that optimal constant is closely related to the turbulent intensity in low wind speed region and the constant torque control has better performance than the constant power control with respect to mechanical load in high wind speed region.

  • A computer program that simulates electric utility steam condensers was developed, and used to investigate the effects of enhanced tubes in steam condensers. The replacement of smooth tubes with enhanced tubes reduces the steam condensing temperature, and increases the efficiency of the electric utility. Therefore, a significant amount of power may be reserved without any modification of the utility. Three enhanced tubes, corrugated, low fin with internal ribs, and low fin with internal 3-D roughness, were considered. The results showed that there is an optimal internal roughness height. Low fin tubes with a 3-D roughness were superior to the other enhanced geometries. This was attributed to longitudinal vortices generated between the circumferential dimples. An additional 0.5 MW~1.3 MW was possible when smooth tubes were replaced with enhanced tubes in the 600 MW electric utility condenser. The additional power increased with increasing coolant temperature. More investigations on fouling, corrosion, and mechanical properties will be necessary for actual applications of enhanced tubes in electric utility condensers.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of catechin on the changes of microsomal mixed function oxidase(MFO) system and oxidative damage in rat liver exposed to microwave. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 200$\pm$10g body weight were randomly assigned to one normal and microwave exposed groups: microwave exposed groups were divided three groups: catechin free diet(MW) group, 0.25% catechin(MW+0.25C) group and 0.5% catechin(MW+0.5C) group to the levels of dietary catechin supplementation. The rats were irradiated with microwave at frequency 2.45GHz for 15 min and then the changes pattern of mixed function oxidase system and oxidative damage were investigated for 16 days. The activity of XOD in MW group was increased from 4 day to 8 days after irradiation, compared to normal group and decreased to the level of normal group 16 days. But catechin supplementation group were maintained to the normal level. The contents of cytochrome P(sub)450 and NADPH cytochrome P(sub)450 reductase activities in liver of MW group was increased from 4 day to 8 day after irradiation, compared to normal group and decreased to the level of normal group at 16 day. But catechin supplementation group were recovered to the normal level. The contents of superoxide radical in liver of MW group was increased 1.28, 1.25, 1.17 fold of normal group at 4,6 and 8 days days after irradiation. respectively, but catechin supplementation group were maintained the normal level. The contents of lipifuscin in liver have a same tendency in superoxide radical contents. These result suggested that the supplementation of catechin have control the mixed function oxidase system and oxidative damage and that may help to recover tissues from microwave damage. • Selectivity estimation for spatial query is very important process used in finding the most efficient execution plan. Many works have been performed to estimate accurate selectivity. Although they deal with some problems such as false-count, multi-count, they can not get such effects in little memory space. Therefore, we propose a new technique called MW Histogram which is able to compress summary data and get reasonable results and has a flexible structure to react dynamic update. Our method is based on two techniques : (a) MinSkew partitioning algorithm which deal with skewed spatial datasets efficiently (b) Wavelet transformation which compression effect is proven. The experimental results showed that the MW Histogram which the buckets and wavelet coefficients ratio is 0.3 is lower relative error than MinSkew Histogram about 5%-20% queries, demonstrates that MW histogram gets a good selectivity in little memory.

  • The objective of present study was to simultaneously isolate of isoflavone and soyasaponin compounds from the germ of soybean seeds. Soy germ flours were defatted with hexane for 48h at room temperature, and methanolic extracts were prepared using reflux apparatus at $90^{\circ}C$ for 6h, two times. After extraction, extracts were separated with preparative RP-$C_{18}$ packing column ($125{\AA}$, $55-105{\mu}m$, $40{\times}150mm$), and collected 52 fractions were identified with TLC plate (Kieselgel 60 F-254) and HPLC, respectively. Among the identified isoflavone and soyasaponin fractions, isoflavone fractions were re-separated using a recycling HPLC with gel permeation column (Jaigel-W252, $20{\times}500mm$). Final fractions were air-dried, and the purified compounds of two isoflavones (ISF-1-1, ISF-1-2) and four soyasaponins (SAP-1, SAP-2, SAP-3, SAP-4) were obtained. Two isoflavone compounds (ISF-1-1, ISF-1-2) were acid-hydrolyzed for the identification of their aglycones, and confirmed by comparing with 12 types of isoflavone isomers. While the four kinds of soyasaponins were identified by using a micro Q-TOF mass spectrometer in the ESI positive mode with capillary voltage of 4.5kV, and dry temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Base on the obtained results, it was conclude that ISF-1-1 is the mixture isomers of daidzin (43.4%), glycitin (47.0%), and genistin (9.6%), but ISF-1-2 is the single compound of genistin (99.8% <). On the other hand, soyasaponin SAP-1 is the mixture compounds of soyasaponin A-group (Aa, Ab, Ac, Ae, Af); SAP-2 is soyasaponin B-group (Ba, Bb, Bc) and E-group (Bd, Be); SAP-3 is soyasaponin B-group (Ba, Bb, Bc), E-group (Bd, Be), and DDMP-group (${\beta}g$); SAP-4 is soyasaponin B-group (Ba, Bb, Bc), E-group (Bd, Be), and DDMP-group (${\beta}g$, ${\beta}a$), respectively.

  • To set an optimal harvest time of main 7 whole crop silage rice cultivars, Nokyang(Ny), Mogwoo(Mw), Mogyang(My), Jungmo1029(Jm1029), Jungmo1038(Jm1038), Nokwoo(Nw) and Yeongwoo(Yw), based on feed value, we analyzed their feed values such as percent crude protein(CP), crude fat(CF), crude ash(CA), neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF) and lignin. It was evaluated every 10 days from heading to 40 days after heading(DAH). Total digestible nutrient(TDN) and relative feed value(RFV) was also calculated from ADF and NDF. As results, CP was generally in decline as increasing DAH in Ny, My, Jm1029, Jm1038 and Yw and decreased to 20 DAH in Mw, decreased after increasing to 30 days in Nw. The CP content of Ny was relatively the highest ranged from 5.3% to 10.1% and Mw the lowest 4.5% to 5.2%, compared to others. CF content tend to decrease as DAH increase in Ny, My and Nw and decreased after increasing to 30 days Jm1029, increased after decreasing to 20 days Jm1038 but was not shown distinct trend of increase or decrease in Mw. Especially, that of Yw's CF gradually increased as harvest time late but relative content the lowest from 1.46% to 2.29% among 7 cultivars. The CA content of Ny, My, Jm1029 and Jm1038 approximately decreased as DAH increased and that of Mw was similar to others after heading, Nw decreased after 10 days and Yw increased after flowering. In all 7 cultivars, NDF and ADF had a tendency to decrease as days accumulated, in particular, Yw was the lowest on 30 DAH and so the content of Yw's TDN the highest(71.5%), while the lowest(67.2%) in Nw. For lignin, particularly, Mw tend to be in decline as DAH increase and was the lowest ranged from 1.34% to 1.87%. ADF analyses allows for the evaluation of in vivo digestible dry matter(DDM) and energy availability and NDF analyses provides the best indication of dry matter intake(DMI). Ultimately, the two factors can be combined to derive RFV for forage. RFV in general increased as DAH increased in all cultivars and was in order, Yw>My>Ny> Jm1038>Mw>Jm1029>Nw on 30 DAH. Taken together when these results, despite a slight increase of TDN after 30 DAH except Yw, considering forage yield potential, digestibility of grains and gradual decrease of CP and CF, the yellow ripe stage, about 30 DAH, was appropriate to harvest whole crop rice for silage use.

  • In order to search for anti-Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type-1 agents from Korean medicinal herbs and Korean traditional prescriptions (herb complexes), we selected 80 medicinal herbs and 45 prescriptions, based on a review of the Korean traditional medicine books. Both methanol extracts and boiling-water extracts were tested by means of the MTT assay (tetrazolium based colorimetric assay). Ten of the 125 methanol extracts: CM-11, CM-18, CM-19, CM-21, CM-22, CM-39, MM-3, MM-18, MM-29, MM-73 (see explanation of nomenclature below), showed efficacy against HSV-1. Twelve of the water extracts: CW-2, CW-3-I, CW-3-II, CW-18, MW-3, MW-5 MW-6, MW-12, MW-47, MW-69, MW-73 and MW-79 were active. #3 (individual herb) and #73 (individual herb) were interesting because both water and methanol extracts were active. Especially, #3 is a part of composition of Hong-il-$laksamd{\check{u}}ngbang$ and Hojanghaedokt'ang which have anti-HSV-1 activitives. The SI value of MW-69 and CW-18 was relative high as $10.2{\pm}0.7$ and $11.8{\pm}2.2$. The cytotoxic effect on Vera cells of $Panch'{\check{o}}nch'onch'{\check{o}}ngbang$, Taraxacum platycarpum H. Dahlst. and acycloguanosine was determined by MTT assay. Water extracts of $Panch'{\check{o}}nch'onch'{\check{o}}ngbang$ (prescription) and Taraxacum platycarpum H. Dahlst. showed very weak cytotoxic effects on Vero cells at > $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ but acycloguanosine showed strang cytotoxic effects on Vera cells at > $100\;{\mu}g/ml$. As a result, #3, #73, MW-69 and CW-18 are considered as potentially useful for anti-HSV-1 agent and will be the focus of further research. Abbreviations: CM - methanol extracts of traditional prescriptions; CW - water extracts of traditional prescriptions; MM - methanol extracts of individual herbs; MW - water extracts of individual herbs.

  • The phase properties of ground acceleration records from Mw 5.5~6.5 earthquakes are analyzed. The interrelationships between phase properties and significant durations, as well as PGA, are clarified through both of theoretical and empirical approaches. The probabilistic characteristics of phase information is also discussed based on previous studies and it is shown that circular normal distribution is the most appropriate probability distribution for the phase angle and phase difference. Whereas those variates can be modeled by Gaussian random variables. From the survey results on the frequency dependency of the phase statistics, a simple model is introduced, which is possible to express the frequency dependency of phase information. It is also shown that the significant duration can be controlled by appropriately chosen standard deviation of phase difference for 4~8Hz frequency band and additional consideration of phase scattering in higher frequency band through a series of Monte Carlo simulations. The source of phase scattering effect is also pointed out and discussed.

  • This paper introduces design processes of 10 MW class superconducting generator for wind Turbine. Superconducting generator can produce 5 times stronger magnetic field than permanent magnet at least, which enables large scale wind turbine to function as a lighter, smaller and more highly efficient system. These processes are targeted for higher efficiency and shorter high temperature superconductor (HTS) wires to fabricate 10 MW class superconducting generator. Three different approaches will be described in these design processes. First design process focuses on the number of rotor poles. Secondly, 270 and 360 A operating current of superconducting field coil can be adapted as a design parameter in this process. Lastly, 3 and 6 kV line to line voltage of stator coil will be used to design 10 MW class superconducting generator.
