  • A jet-loop reactor was used for the biological treatment of ethylene glycol(EG) which is a main component of polyester weight-loss wastewater, and is difficult to be removed by physicochemical treatments. Volumetric oxygen coefficient(kLa) of jet-loop reactor was significantly larfgeer that of air-lift reactor. When organic loading rates of synthetic polyester weight-loss wastewater were 2.64 $kgOD_{Mn}/m^3$.day and 3.07 $kgCOD_{Cr}/m^3$.day, the effluent concentrations were measured as 154 $mgCOD_{Mn}/L$ and 156$mgCOD_{Cr}/L$, and removal efficiencies were found as 93%and 93.6%, respectively. The specific removal rate was proportionally increased from 0.25 to 1.60 $kgCOD_{Mn}$-removed/kgMLVSS.day as specific loading rate was increased from 0.25 to 1.72 $kgCOD_{Mn}$/kgMLVSS.day. Also, kinetics constants such as $K_s$, k, $K_d$, and Y were estimated as 89 mg/L, $0.05 hr^{-1}$, 0.1$day^{-1}$ and 0.78 respectively. When the organic loading rates of real polyester weight-loss wastewater were 2.64 $kgOD_{Mn}/m^3$. and 5.24 $kgCOD_{Cr}/m^3$. day, the effluent concentrations were measured as 150 $mgCOD_{Mn}$/L, and 306 $mgCOD_{Cr}$/L, and removal efficiencies were found as 93.2% and 93%, respectively. This study demonstrated that EG in the wastewater could be efficiently removed biologically using a jet-loop reactor.

  • In this study, we investigated the buffering effect with different COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and TP shock loads on the performance of lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor(SBR) using synthetic wastewater. This study was operated under the following conditions : HRT, 12 hrs : MLSS, 2,000 mg/L : F/M ratio, $0.2kgCOD/kgMLSS{\cdot}d$ : SRT, 20days, and was increased by a factor, COD : ranging from 200-2000 mg/L, $NH_4{^+}-N$ : ranging from 30-300 mg/L, T-P : ranging from 5-50 mg/L in the reactor. As results, COD removal rate at different shock loads was decreased until 42.1%(stable state : 95%) and concentration with effluent was higher than 695 mg/L(at Run 6). In case of $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal rate was decreased until 35.8% from 97.0% and also T-P removal rate was decreased until 5.0%. Effluent concentrations of COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and T-P were rapidly increased according to shock loads and needed 3, 4 and 6 additional cycle times for recovering the stable condition.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of low concentration of oxygen on reduction of perchlorate, especially low perchlorate influent concentrations in a biofilm reactor, as well as the effect of flow pattern in a biofilm reactor. Dissolved oxygen averaging 1 mg/L did not inhibit reduction of influent perchlorate from 23 to $426\;{\mu}g/L$ in the biofilm reactors when sufficient acetate was added, probably due to limitation of oxygen diffusion into the biofilm. Influent perchlorate ranging from 23 to $426\;{\mu}g/L$ was reduced to below detection level ($4\;{\mu}g/L$) in the presence of 1 mg/L dissolved oxygen (DO). Chloride was produced in a ratio of $0.37gCl^-/g{ClO_4}^-$ and $0.35gCl^-/g{ClO_4}^-$ in plug flow and recirculation biofilm reactor which is similar to stoichiometric amount ($0.36gCl^-/g{ClO_4}^-$) indicating complete perchlorate reduction at $426\;{\mu}g/L$ of ${ClO_4}^-$ feeding. At $23\;{\mu}g/L$L influent perchlorate, total biomass solids were 3.18 g and 2.81 g in the plug flow and recirculation biofilm reactors. The most probable number(MPN) analysis for perchlorate-reducing bacteria showed $10^4$ to $10^5\;cells/cm^2$ in both biofilm reactors throughout the experiments. The effluent perchlorate concentrations were not significantly different in the two different flow regimes, plug flow and recirculation biofilm reactors.

  • A pilot scale experiment was performed for a year to develop a two-phase anaerobic process for piggery wastewater treatment (COD: 6,000mg/L, BOD: 4,000mg/L, SS: 500mg/L, pH 8.4, alkalinity 6,000mg/L). The acidogenic reactor had a total volume of 3㎥, and the methanogenic reactor, an anaerobic up-flow sludge filter, combining a filter and a sludge bed, was also of total volume 3㎥(1.5㎥ of upper packing material). Temperatures of the acidogenic and methanogenic reactors kept at 20$^{\circ}C$ and 35$^{\circ}C$, respectively. When the pH of the acidogenic reactor was controlled at 6.0-7.0 with HCl, the COD removal efficiency increased from 50 to 80% over a period of six months, and as a result, the COD of the final effluent fell in the range of 1,000-1,500 mg/L. BOD removal efficiency over the same period was above 90%, and 300 to 400 mg/L was maintained in the final effluent. The average SS in the final effluent was 270 mg/L. The methane production was 0.32㎥ CH$_4$/kg COD(sub)removed and methane content of the methanogenic reactor was high value at 80-90%. When the pH of the acidogenic reactor was not controlled over the final two months, the pH reached 8.2 and acid conversion decreased compared with that of pH controlled, while COD removal was similar to the pH controlled operation. Without pH control, the methane content in the gas from methanogenic reactor improved to 90%, compared to 80% with pH control.

  • A mixed bacterial culture capable of mineralizing methyl tort-butyl ether (MTBE), other fuel oxygenates ethers, tertiary carbon alcohols, benzene and toluene was used to inoculate batch reactor and sequence batch reactor (SBR) to treat gasoline contaminated ground water containing about 60 mg/L MTBE, 5 mg/L benzene, 5 mg/L toluene, and low concentrations of several other aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Respirometery studies showed that MTBE degrading mixed culture could treat MTBE contaminated ground water with addition of nitrogen and phosphate. SBR was operated to demonstrate the feasibility of using suspended growth activated system for the treatment of ground water and to confirm that the respirometry derived kinetics and stoichiometric coefficients were useful for predicting reactor performance. Theoretical performance of the reactor was predicted using mathematical models calibrated with biokinetic parameters derived from respirometry studies.

  • The kinetics of Ti-transformed Salvia miltiorrhiza cell cultures was studied in 250-$m\ell$ shake flasks by using B5 medium with addition of 30 gfL of sucrose. In the cell cultures, the maximum cell mass obtained was 11.5 g DW/L on day 15. The highest amount of phenolic compounds - rosmarinic acid (RA) and lithospermic acid B (LAB) reached 871.3 mg/L (day 15) and 121.3 mg/L (day 13), respectively. The total tanshinone production, i.e., intracellular plus extracellular cryptotanshinone, tanshinone 1, and tanshinone IIA, was 5.3 mg/L on day 13. For the cultivations in 2.4-L stirred bioreactors, the residual sugar level and medium conductivity were a little higher in a small turbine impeller reactor ($T_s$) than those in a large turbine impeller reactor ($T_L$), while a higher cell density was obtained in the $T_L$. For the production of tanshinones and phenolics, better results were obtained in the $T_L$ than in the $T_s$. In the $T_L$, similar or even a little higher production titers of tanshinones and phenolic compounds were achieved compared to those in the flasks. The results suggest that the shake flask results could be successfully scaled up to the $T_L$ reactor. Such a large impeller reactor like $T_L$ may be better than a small impeller one for the large-scale production of the valuable metabolites by the suspension cultures of Ti transformed S.miltiorrhiza cells. This is considered due to the beneficial culture environment in the $T_L$, such as low shear rates as estimated theoretically.

  • Effect of improvement of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system on the inactivation performance of bacteria were investigated. The improvement of plasma reactor was performed by combination with the basic plasma reactor and UV process or combination with the basic plasma reactor and circulation system which was equipped with gas-liquid mixer. Experimental results showed that tailing effect was appeared after the exponential decrease in basic plasma reactor. There was no enhancement effect on the Ralstonia Solanacearum inactivation with combination of basic plasma process and UV process. The application of gas-liquid mixing device on the basic plasma reactor reduced inactivation time and led to complete sterilization. The effect existence of gas-liquid mixing device, voltage, air flow rate (1 ~ 5 L/min), water circulation rate (2.8 ~ 9.4 L/min) in gas-liquid mixing plasma, plasma voltage and UV power of gas-liquid mixing plasma+UV process were evaluated. The optimum air flow rate, water circulation rate, voltage of gas-liquid mixing system were 3 L/min, 3.5 L/min and 60 V, respectively. There was no enhancement effect on the Ralstonia Solanacearum inactivation with combination of gas-liquid mixing plasma and UV process.

  • This study was carried to investigate the biodegradability of phenol wastewater in the sluge blanket-packed bed reactor(SBPBR). The reactor consisted of two regions. The lower region was a sludge blanket of 0.5 m height and the upper region was a packed-bed. The phenol and COD concentration of the effluent, the gas production and the composition of gas were measured to determine the performance of the anaerobic wastewater treatment system as the phenol concentration of the influent was increased from 600 to 1800 mg/l. Stable biodegradation of phenol wastewater could be achieved with the anaerobic treatment system from 600 to 1200 mg/l of the influent phenol concentration. But the SBPBR system was getting more serious at 1800 mg/l of influent phenol concentration. At the steady state of the influent phenol concentration of 600-1200 mg/l, the treatment performance showed the phenol removal efficiency of 94.5~96.3%, the COD removal efficiency of 93.3~96% and the gas production of 4.94~9.64 l/day.
