Removal of Ammonia Nitrogen and Organics from Piggery Wastewater Using BACC Process-II. Effect of COD/N on Removal of NItrogen and Organics (BACC를 이용한 축산폐수의 암모니아성 질소 및 유기물의 제거 II. COD/N비가 질소 및 유기물 제거에 미치는 영향)

  • To treat piggery wastewater containing refractory compounds including nitrogen, physical treatments using zeolite and biological processes were investigated. In biogical treatment, the removal efficiencies of organics and nitrogen in bioreador using BACC (Biological Activated Carbon Cartridge) media filled with granule activated carbon were examined. The best removal efficiencies achieved for TKN and COD(sub)cr were 82% and 53% respectively, when zeolite dosage was 300 g/L. Specific nitrogen removal ability was 3.2 mg/g at a zeolite dosage of 50 g/L, whereas specific nitrogen removal ability was 1.8 mg/g at a zeolite dosage of 300 g/L. The increased of C/N ratio resulting from the removal of nitrogen using zeolite led to an increase in removal efficiency of organics. As C/N ratio was increased to 2.0, 2.44 and 6.58 at a HRT of 48 hours in a BACC bioreactor, removal efficiencies of COD(sub)cr were increased to 53.5%, 57.4% and 80.6%. The removal efficiency of wastewater using a zeolite dosage of 399 g/L was increased by 27.1% compared to that of control treatment.

  • Zeolite is an ideal host material for encapsulating nano-size metal catalyst species because of its defined microporous structure, prominent adsorption/condensation properties, high surface area, chemical/thermal stability, and transparency to light. In this study, $TiO_2$ photocatalyst was incorporated in highly hydrophobic Y zeolite and its photocatalytic activity was examined in the photocatalytic oxidation of olefins under UV-light irradiation using molecular oxygen as an oxygen source. $TiO_2$ nanoparticles incorporated in hydrophobic Y zeolite exhibited a markedly enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with bare $TiO_2$ owing to its excellent affinity toward organic moieties, which facilitates the mass transfer of organic substrates and allows them to efficiently access to the neighboring active $TiO_2$ surface.

  • For the proposal of Microcystis aeruginosa control technique by coagulants, removal effects of coagulants were carried out using isolated strain and collected water bloom of M. aeruginosa on Downstream of the Nakdong River. Both of purified and field-collected M. aeruginosa were entirely sedimented by the addition of the coagulant ceramic-zeolite type Co 100 (1.5 mg/$\ell$) within 24 hr, but Yellow loess (10 mg/$\ell$) was less effective for the removal of M. aeruginosa within 24hr. Thus it was concluded that Ceramic-Zeolite type Co 100 was the most effective coagulant.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effect of natural zeolite addition on the purification of livestock farming wastewater and the application of zeolite used for purification of livestock farming wastewater on growth of sudangrass. In a semi-continuous process it was found that COD, $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$ and T-N contents in the effluent solution decreased with the treatment of natural zeolite. The zeolite addition was effective on the purification of livestock farming wastewater. By the results of application for sudangrass cultivation, the accumulative N-uptake contents by sudangrass were lower than that of control(35kg/10a) at early growth stage, but were higher at the late growth stage.

Synthesis and Morphological Transformation of NaA Zeolite Crystals at High Temperature

  • Well-shaped NaA zeolite cubic crystals of a large size of $5-7{\mu}m$ were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in a mother solution having a $3.55Na_2O:Al_2O_3:1.6SiO_2:593\~2000H_2O$ composition. Thermal treatment of NaA zeolite crystals resulted in the formation of a crystalline phase of $NaAlSiO_4-Camegeite$ between 800 and $900^{\circ}C$. Even at $1000^{\circ}C,\;NaAlSiO_4$ phase was found as a major product. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and DTA/TGA and BET analyses were used to characterize the initial materials and the obtained products after various heat treatments.

  • Copper(II) complexes with tetraoxo dithia tetraaza macrocyclic ligands; [18]ane$N_4S_2$: 1,4,10,13-tetraaza-5,9,14,18-tetraoxo-7,16-dithia-cyclooctadecane, [20]ane$N_4S_2$: 1,5,11,15-tetraaza-6,10,16,20-tetraoxo-8,18-dithia-cyclocosane,Bzo2[18]ane$N_4S_2$: dibenzo-1,4,10,13-tetraaza-5,9,14,18-tetraoxo-7,16-dithia-cyclooctadecane, Bzo2[20]ane$N_4S_2$: dibenzo-1,5,11,15-tetraaza-6,10,16,20-tetraoxo-8,18-dithia-cyclocosane; were entrapped in the nanopores of zeolite-Y by a two-step process in the liquid phase: (i) adsorption of [bis(diamine)copper(II)] (diamine = 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,2-diaminobenzene, 1,3-diaminobenzene); $[Cu(N-N)_2]^{2+}$-NaY; in the nanopores of the zeolite, and (ii) in situ template condensation of the copper(II) precursor complex with thiodiglycolic acid. The obtained complexes and new host-guest nanocomposite materials; $[Cu([18]aneN_4S_2)]^{2+}-NaY,\;[Cu([20]aneN_4S_2)]^{2+}-NaY,\;[Cu(Bzo_2[18]aneN_4S_2)]^{2+}-NaY,\;[Cu(Bzo_2[20]aneN_4S_2)]^{2+}$-NaY; have been characterized by elemental analysis FT-IR, DRS and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques, molar conductance and magnetic moment data, XRD and, as well as nitrogen adsorption. Analysis of data indicates all of the complexes have been encapsulated within nanopore of zeolite Y without affecting the zeolite framework structure.

  • A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effectiveness of ammonium sulfate absorbed Zeolite on the yield of rice and the changes of some plant nutrients under the condition of two levels of water percolation. The results were as follows: 1. Unhulled rice yield was increased in the plot of the percolation of 10 mm/day than the percolation of 30 mm/day due to the increase of panicle number and ripening ratio. 2. $NH^+_4-N$, $K^+$ and $SiO_2$ concentration in soil leachates were lower in the percolation rate of 10 mm/day than in the early stage of rice growth were decreased by the application of Zeolite 1.0 T/10a. 3. Plant uptakes of K and N in the harvesting stage were more accelerated in the percolation of 10 mm/day comparing with the percolation of 30 mm/day, and the silica uptake of plant was the reverse against the case of former elements. 4. The optimum rates of Zeolite for maximum yield were about 1T/10a.

  • Natural zeolite rock of which dominent clay minerals were mordenite and clinoptilolite was collected from Wolsung, Kyungpook province. It was pulverized and sieved into four fractions of $1{\sim}0.5,\;0,5{\sim}0.25,\;0.25{\sim}0.1,$ and<0.1mm. The specific surface areas of its four fractions were determined by $H_2O$ and EGME. The specific surface area of zeolite was slightly affected according to species of measuring material, but was scarcely affected by partical size, nor increased of pulverizing. The surface area of zeolite was calculated from geometric structure of mordenite and it was compared with the specific surface area calculated from maximum numbers of $H_2O$ which could be adsorbed on mordenite. On the basis of that result, the specific area measured from zeolite was estimated to be a part of surface area calculated from it. Accordingly, it was suggested that a new method should be developed for the determination of an exact surface area of zeolite.

Optimum Condition for $NH_4-N$ Removal in Cowshed Wastewater by Zeolite Column (우사(牛舍) 폐수중(廢水中) 암모니아태(態) 질소(窒素) 제거(除去)를 위한 zeolite column의 적정조건(適正條件))

  • This study was conducted to find out the optimum condition for $NH_4-N$ removal from wastewater by a zeolite column. The removal efficiency of $NH_4-N$ by a glass column packed with decreased with the increase in initial concentration, percolation velocity and fraction number. The result of multiple stepwise regressions, $NH_4-N$ removal efficiency by the zeolite column showed a high correlationship with various parameters such as percolation velocity, initial concentration, adsorption amount and fraction number. Theoretical formula by parameter coefficients of multiple stepwise regression was found to be $NH_4-N$ removal $efficiency=0.620{\times}amount$ of zeolite $-0.456{\times}percolation$ velocity $-0.212{\times}initial$ concentration $-3.038{\times}fraction$ number+100.1 In the case of the $NH_4-N$ removal efficiency in cattle farming wastewater, the experimental data were nearly coincident with the theoretical formula.

  • Zeolite SUZ-4 was successfully synthesized with TEAOH (Tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide) as structure directing agent under a vigorous stirring condition. Well-defined zeolite SUZ-4 structure was only obtained under stirring of 250 rpm or more. The results imply that stirring plays a pivotal role for reproducible synthesis. Morphology of SUZ-4 crystal was controlled by adjustment of water concentrations. The physicochemical characterization of SUZ-4 and its hydrothermal stability using a steam treatment were investigated by using XRD, BET, and $NH_3-TPD$.
