High thermal efficiency and the ability to use various types of fuel are a few of the many advantages of diesel engines. However, a major disadvantage is that their exhaust emissions are more harmful to humans and the environment than that of conventional engine. Consequently, the provisions of the international emissions standards for diesel engine equipped passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and ships have become more stringent. These standards include the EU Euro 6, the IMO MEPC Tier 3, and the US EPA Tier 4. Ryu et al. published a study that applied fuel additives to two-stroke diesel engines. In this study, a four-stroke diesel engine using diesel oil for a generator is utilized as the test subject, and an experiment is performed to verify whether fuel additive can be used to improve performance and exhaust emissions. In addition, this experimental study presents research results for the application of fuel additives in both two-stroke and four-stroke diesel engines. The experimental results were compared and analyzed by placing an oil-soluble calcium-based organometallic compound in diesel oil. The results confirmed that the addition of fuel additive improved the performance (fuel consumption rate, exhaust gas temperature) and exhaust emissions (NOx, CO) of the diesel engine.
This article describes a methodology based on experiments and 1D modeling work related to the exhaust system analysis of a small two-stroke engine. The primary goal of this work was to understand how the design criteria of a compact exhaust system influenced the exhaust port pressure, since its evolution controls not only engine performance but also exhaust emissions. On the experimental side, a fully instrumented 50cc two-stroke engine was used to check the behavior of three different exhaust systems. A problem related to instantaneous pressure measurements in unsteady, hot flow was detected and solved during the study. To build the 1D model of the three exhaust systems, experimental information on the steady flow and the impulse test rigs was obtained under controlled conditions in specific facilities. Accurate comparisons between measured and calculated exhaust port instantaneous pressures were obtained from the following different exhaust system configurations: a straight duct, a tapered pipe and the three compact exhaust systems. The last step in the method used this model to analyze the pressure waves inside the exhaust system and detect the influence of the geometric parameters. The results should lead to improvements in the design process of complex compact exhaust systems in two-stroke engines.
The effects of stroke change on turbulent kinetic energy for the in-cylinder flow of a four-valve SI engine were studied. For this study, the same intake manifold, head, cylinder, and the piston were used to examine turbulence characteristics in two different strokes. In-cylinder flow measurements were conducted using three dimensional LDV system. The measurement method, which simultaneously collects 3-D velocity data, allowed a evaluation of turbulent kinetic energy inside a cylinder. High levels of turbulent kinetic energy were found in regions of high shear flow, attributed to the collisions of intake flows. These specific results support the more general conclusion that the inlet conditions play the dominant role in the generation of the turbulence fields during the intake stroke. However, in the absence of two counter rotating vortices, this intake generated turbulent kinetic energy continues to decrease but at a much faster rate.

Theoretical analysis on the transient torsional vibration was started from early 1960's for high power synchronous motor application. As for marine engineering, simulation and measuring techniques of transient torsional vibration have been steadily studied by manufacturer of flexible coupling and designer of four stroke marine diesel engine. In this paper, the simulation method of transient torsional vibration for four stroke marine diesel engine application using Newmark method is introduced.

The engine combustion is one of the most important processes affecting performance and emissions. One effective way to improve the engine combustion is to control the motion of the charge inside a cylinder by means of optimum induction system design, because the flame speed is mainly determined by the turbulence at compression(TDC) process in S.I. engine. It is believed that the tumble and swirl motion generated during intake stroke breaks down into small-scale turbulence in the compression stroke of the cycle. However, the exact nature of this relationship is not well known. This paper describes the tumble flow measurements inside the cylinder of a 4-valve S.I. engine using laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) under motoring(non-firing) conditions. This is conducted on an optically assesed single cylinder research engine under motored conditions at an engine speed of 1000rpm. Three different cylinder head intake port configurations are studied to develop a better understanding the tumble flow generation, development, and breakdown mechanisms.
Two engines, one is conventional DOHC 4 valve and the other is narrow valve angle, were used to compare the characteristics of swirl motion generation in the cylinder. One intake port is deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during intake and compression stroke. The results show that the flow patterns of narrow valve engine are much more stable and well arranged compared with the normal engine over the entire intake and compression stroke except early intake stage, and very strong swirl motion is generated at the end of compression stage in this engine nevertheless using straight port which is unfavorable for swirl generating. In the normal engine, however, strong swirl motion induced during intake stroke is destroyed as the compression progresses.

The combustion characteristics of the D.I. diesel engine are largely dependent on the air-fuel ratio and the gas exchange process. The main factors are the shape of combustion chamber, fuel injection system, air flow inside the cylinder, intake air mass flow rate and so forth. Because these factors affect the combustion in a mutual and combined manner, it is very important to clearly understand the correlation of these factors in order to provide the combustion improvement plans. In this paper, we studied the performance and the gas exchange process of marine four-stroke engine using the engine cycle simulation. Also, we predicted briefly turbocharger engine matching.

Propulsion in waves is a complex physical process that involves interactions between a hull, a propeller, a shaft and a prime mover which is often a diesel engine. Among the relevant components, the diesel engine plays an important role in the overall system dynamics. Therefore, using a proper model for the diesel engine is essential to achieve the reasonable accuracy of the transient simulation of the entire system. In this paper, a simulation model of a propulsion system in waves is presented with emphasis on modeling a two-stroke marine diesel engine: the framework for building such a model and its mathematical descriptions. The models are validated against available measurement data, and a sensitivity analysis for the transient performance of the diesel engine is carried out. Finally, the results of the system simulations under various wave conditions are analyzed to understand the physical processes and compare the efficiency for different cases.

The diesel engine is often a serious excitation source in ships. Both the varying cylinder gas forces and the reciprocating and rotating mass forces associated with the crank and the connecting rod mechanism produce ample possibilities for excitation of the engine structure itself, the shafting, the surrounding substructures as well as the hull girder. This paper presents a guide for optimization of excitation forces produced by the marine propulsion 2-stroke diesel engine. The computational program for predicting the excitation forces is developed and applied to 2-stroke in-line engines. The object function is defined as the work done by every cylinder excitation force which is related to the mode shape of the diesel engine system, especially in the torsional vibration of the shafting. As a practical application of the presented method, the crank angle of 7 cylinder 2-stroke engine is optimized to reduce torsional vibration stresses on the shafting. Compared with the regular firing angle, about 60% of the 4th order torsional vibratory stress on the propeller shaft can be reduced by optimizing the crank angle irregularly. The usefulness of the presented optimization method is confirmed by the measurements.
