  • 고성능 스마트기기의 보급과 모바일 사용자들의 고품질 컨텐츠 수요가 증가하면서 급증하는 모바일 데이터 트래픽을 수용하기 위해 소형셀을 통한 네트워크 용량 증대가 가장 현실적인 방안으로 고려되고 있다. 이와 더불어 차세대 이동통신 네트워크의 패러다임이 사용자가 인프라 영역 내에 위치해야 통신 및 서비스를 제공받던 인프라 중심에서, 통신 및 제반 서비스 환경이 사용자를 중심으로 구축되고 운영되는 사용자 중심으로 전환되면서 사용자를 따라 움직이는 이동 소형셀에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다. 본고에서는 ETRI에서 개발 중인 5G(5th Generation) 이동셀 개념 및 주요 기술을 소개하고, 관련 3GPP 표준화 동향 및 국내외 기술개발 동향을 소개한다.

Device to Device Communications Architectures and Cross-Layer Evaluation Frameworks

  • The paper focuses on Device-to-device (D2D) Architectures evaluation frameworks. D2D communication and discovery can improve spectrum usage efficiency and optimize the tradeoffs between throughput and energy consumption. The target operation modes involve both indirect communication between two nodes via a base station or the direct communication among proximal nodes, enabling use cases that can support communications out of cellular coverage, as well as low end-end delay requirements. The paper will present the architectural evolution of D2D networks within 3GPP standardization and will highlight key network functionalities and signaling protocols. It will also identify key analytical and simulation models that can be used to assess the performance and energy efficiency of resource allocation strategies, and it will present a suitable cross-layer integrated framework.

  • So far, artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) has produced impressive results in speech recognition, computer vision, and natural language processing. AI/ML has recently begun to show promise as a viable means for improving the performance of 5G mobile telecommunication systems. This paper investigates standardization activities in 3GPP and O-RAN Alliance regarding AI/ML applications on mobile telecommunication system. Future trends in AI/ML technologies are also summarized. As an overarching technology in 6G, there appears to be no doubt that AI/ML could contribute to every part of mobile systems, including core, RAN, and air-interface, in terms of performance enhancement, automation, cost reduction, and energy consumption reduction.

  • The recent explosion in the number of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites launched to space allows to easily anticipate that the number of satellites in orbit will sustain a dramatic increase. As satellite components are integrated and unified with terrestrial cellular networks, they will play a key role in providing coverage and resilience for future cellular networks. We provide a brief overview of typical scenarios and network architectures for cellular-based LEO satellite communication systems. In addition, we outline 3GPP standardization trends in non-terrestrial networks and satellite access based on 5G/5G Advanced systems and analyze future evolution prospects of cellular-based satellite communication systems.

  • In order to the mobile service uses the wireless terminal including the development of the wire wireless network and Smart phone, and etc. use including mobile office, which and etc. increases. Because in order that the u-Healthcare service using this appeared before the footlights and the existing quality measurement reference considered the speed, error rate, and etc. just, guarantees the stability of the u-Healthcare, the quality control by service are necessary. In this paper, the quality measurement reference by mobile service considering the radio environment as the method for satisfying the quality guarantee of the u-Healthcare mobile service user and user needs was presented. The WiBro u-Healthcare wireless data service quality based system in the end user perspective was established through the main performance index and entrepreneur case presented in the international standardization institute including 3GPP, WiMAX forum, GSMA, and etc. through the related research and the validity of the quality index establishment was presented according to each service.

  • Speech and audio codecs have been developed based on different type of coding technologies since they have different characteristics of signal and applications. In harmony with a convergence between broadcasting and telecommunication system, international organizations for standardization such as 3GPP and ISO/IEC MPEG have tried to compress and transmit multimedia signals using unified codecs. MPEG recently initiated an activity to standardize the USAC (Unified speech and audio coding). However, USAC RM (Reference model) software has been problematic since it has a complex hierarchy, many useless source codes and poor quality of the encoder. To solve these problems, this paper introduces a new RM software designed with an open source paradigm. It was presented at the MPEG meeting in April, 2010 and the source code was released in June.

  • SIP(Session Initiation Protocol) has become an universal standard for multimedia communications for both wired and wireless networks since it has been adopted as a standard protocol for IMS platform in 3GPP standardization organization at November 2000. In this paper, we design and implement a SIP-based softphone client program which provides telephony service between internet users and a call center equipped with VoIP gateway. A softphone client based on PC-to-phone connection should guarantee to provide interoperability with various VoIP gateways and higher portability to be able to operate on different PC environments. The softphone client program in this paper has been developed with SIP 2.0 standard protocol to support interoperability and with JAIN SIP and JMF package to achieve higher portability.

  • As increase of IoT services in wireless communications, the performance evaluation is required to connects massive number of devices in LTE-A system. Existing performance analysis of 3GPP TR 37.868 is shown the limited results up to the number of devices only 30,000 in a cell. So, it is required the performance analysis according to various parameter values in the greater number of devices environment. In this paper, to evaluate the performance, we developed the new modules to simulate LTE-A random access procedures because of a limit that accommodate massive number of devices in existing LTE module. The simulator was developed by OPNET and it can support up to 100,000 devices per cell. This paper also represents the performance analysis results according to the number of preambles, the maximum number of preamble transmissions, backoff indicator and msg2 window size in the same environment with 3GPP TR 37.868. This results are expected to be utilized such as the transition to 5G network and standardization activities.

  • Ongoing standardization effort on 3G cellular system in 3GPP (UNTS) is based on GPRS core network and promises a global standard for systems capable of offering ubiquitous access to internet for mobile users. Considered radio access systems(FDD CDMA, TDD CDMA, and EDGE) are optimized for robust mobile use. However, there are alternative relatively high-rate radio interfaces being standardized for WLAN (IEEE802.11 and HIPER-LAN/2) which are capable of delivering significantly higher data rates to static or semi-static terminals with much less overhead. Also WPANs(BLUETOOTH, IEEE802.15), which will be present in virtually every mobile handset in the near future, are offering low cast and considerable access data rate and thus are very attractive for interworking scenarios. The prospect of using these interfaces as alternative RANs inthe modular UMTS architecture is very promising. Additionally, the recent inclusion of M-IP in the UMTS R99 standard opens the way for IP-level interfacing to the core network. This article offers an overview into WLAN-Cellular interworking. A brief overview of GPRS, UMTS cellular architectures and relevant WLAN standards is given. Possible interworking architectures are presented.

Quasi-distributed Interference Coordination for HSPA HetNet

  • The heterogeneous network (HetNet) has been discussed in detail in the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE Advanced standards. However, the standardization of High-Speed Packet Access HetNet (HSPA HetNet) launched by 3GPP is pushing at full steam. Interference coordination (IC), which is responsible for dealing with the interference in the system, remains a subject worthy of investigation in regard to HSPA HetNet. In this paper, considering the network framework of HSPA HetNet, we propose a quasi-distributed IC (QDIC) scheme to lower the interference level in the co-channel HSPA HetNet. Our QDIC scheme is constructed as slightly different energy-efficient non-cooperative games in the downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) scenarios, respectively. The existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium for these games are first revealed. Then, we derive the closed-form best responses of these games. A feasible implementation is finally developed to achieve our QDIC scheme in the practical DL and UL. Simulation results show the notable benefits of our scheme, which can indeed control the interference level and enhance the system performance.
