Recently the VR technique has evolved into a mixed reality (MR) technique, in which a user can observe a real world in front of him/her as well as virtual objects displayed. This has been realized by the employment of a see-through type HMD (S-HMD). We have been developing a mixed reality space employing the MR technique. The objective of our study is to realize a virtual human that acts as a man-machine interface in the real space. It is important in the study to create a virtual human acting naturally in front of a user. In order to give natural motions to the virtual human, we employ a developed motion capture technique. We have already created various 3-D human motion models by the motion capture technique. In this paper, we present a technique for creating a virtual human using a human model provided by a computer graphics software, 3D Studio Max(C). The main difficulty of this issue is that 3D Studio Max(C) claims 28 feature points for describing a human motion, but the used motion capture system assumes less number of feature points. Therefore a technique is proposed in the paper for producing motion data of 28 feature points from the motion data of less number of feature points or from incomplete motion data. Performance of the proposed technique was examined by observing visually the demonstration of some motions of a created virtual human and overall natural motions were realized.

Recently immersive virtual reality (VR) becomes popular due to the advanced development of I/O interfaces and related SWs for effectively constructing VR environments. In particular, natural and intuitive manipulation of 3D virtual objects is still considered as one of the most important user interaction issues. This paper presents a comparative study on the manipulation and interaction of 3D virtual objects using different interfaces and interactions in three VR environments. The comparative study includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. Three different experimental setups are 1) typical desktop-based VR using mouse and keyboard, 2) hand gesture-supported desktop VR using a Leap Motion sensor, and 3) immersive VR by wearing an HMD with hand gesture interaction using a Leap Motion sensor. In the desktop VR with hand gestures, the Leap Motion sensor is put on the desk. On the other hand, in the immersive VR, the sensor is mounted on the HMD so that the user can manipulate virtual objects in the front of the HMD. For the quantitative analysis, a task completion time and success rate were measured. Experimental tasks require complex 3D transformation such as simultaneous 3D translation and 3D rotation. For the qualitative analysis, various factors relating to user experience such as ease of use, natural interaction, and stressfulness were evaluated. The qualitative and quantitative analyses show that the immersive VR with the natural hand gesture provides more intuitive and natural interactions, supports fast and effective performance on task completion, but causes stressful condition.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has decreased face-to-face communication in everyday life, our interest in cultural communication via virtual world has grown significantly. In particular, the demand for applications that use three-dimensional (3D) data generation technology such as virtual reality, augmented reality, virtual performances, and realistic content is rapidly increasing in the entertainment and gaming industries. Additionally, improved computing capacity has increased the demand for high-resolution data. This study investigates the trends in 3D scanning and photogrammetry technologies that can support high-quality 3D data generation and introduces the high-resolution 3D data generation technology developed and reported in ETRI.

This paper puts emphasis on navigation in virtual environment, which is one of the major interfaces for the interactivity between human and virtual environment in virtual reality circumstances and worlds. It proposes a new navigation method: 2d Map-Based navigation, which prevents user's spatial lost in 3D Virtual Environment. The 2D Map-Based Navigation is composed of three major processes, Constant Velocity Navigation, Collision Detection and Avoidance, and Path Adjustment. The 2D Map-Based Navigation can reduce user's difficulties and improve user's sense of presence and reality in the virtual environments. The experiment study proved that the 2D Map-Based Navigation is a very natural, straightforward and useful navigation interface in the virtual environment.
The world being made by computers showing great expanses and complex and various expression provides not simply communication places but also a new civilization and a new creative world. Among these, 3D computer graphics, 3D animation and virtual reality technology wore sublimated as a new culture and a new genre of art by joining graphic design and computer engineering. In this study, I tried to make a diagnosis of possibilities, limits and differences of expression in the area of virtual reality computer graphics animation as a comparison between camera action, angle of actual still camera and film camera and virtual software for 3D computer graphics software - Maya, XSI, Softimage3D.

This study examines the effects of virtual reality learning materials on the learners' learning motivation. For this study, we developed a virtual reality learning material for geological learning that allows observation of the characteristics of rocks in Korean topography that is closely related to learning contents. A 15-hour class was conducted with 91 students using virtual reality learning materials developed for first-year science high school students in D city. ARCS learning motivation strategy was used. Pre-test was conducted before the start of the classes and post-test was conducted after the classes. Statistical processing was analyzed using R-3.5.1 version program. As a result, the utilization of virtual reality learning materials has significant effects on attention concentration, satisfaction, and confidence in the learner's motivation factors. Using virtual reality in geological classes, students' interest in learning activities improve their immersion and concentration, which helps them understand the learning contents better.

With the popularity of smart phones and the help of high-speed wireless communication technology, high-quality multimedia contents have become common in mobile devices. Especially, the release of Oculus Rift opens a new era of virtual reality technology in consumer market. At the same time, 3D audio technology which is currently used to make computer games more realistic will soon be applied to the next generation of mobile phone and expected to offer a more expansive experience than its visual counterpart. This paper surveys concepts, algorithms, and systems for modeling 3D sound virtual environment applications. To do this, we first introduce an important design principle for audio rendering based on physics-based geometric algorithms and multichannel technologies, and introduce an audio rendering pipeline to a scene graph-based virtual reality system and a hardware architecture to model sound propagation.
This paper presents to reduce distinction between the real world and the virtual world using high-quality objects in Augmented Reality(AR). To make high-quality objects, using 3D studio max, VRML(Virtual Reality Modeling Language) and Artoolkit.
On-line avatar community service requires natural representation of communication, emotional expression, and popular dances and various kinds of services. The space should be dynamic, and the interaction between the motions of avatars and the space is required. The avatars with their national, interesting, and various motions should be implemented togetherwith interaction with virtual spaces, in order to have competition in developing 3D avatars. It is expected for 3D avatars to be broadly applied for 3D shopping malls for e-commerce, cyber model houses, 3 D simulations, and 3D virtual reality game. Therefore, for one line 3D avatar community services, we try to provide the scheme for making interactive virtual spaces, together with 3D avatar animations.
Recent, the number of consumers using home shopping are in increase. So, there have been a lot of effort to provide services that meet the consumer's eye level in each store. In particular, apparel stores have been conducted the research for virtual fitting room based on augmented reality technology that consumers can simulate in real time costumes that meet the tastes of consumers in online and offline market. In addition, some services has already progress. The general virtual fitting room simulator built the user interface based on OpenCV, augmented reality API, Kinect, and so on. But, it has the disadvantage that the equipment is expensive. In this paper, we have developed a 3D virtual fitting room simulator based on augmented reality technology using OpenCV and libsigc$^{++}$. This simulator can simulate easily in general home without any special equipment. This simulator is expected to be available very efficient in online and offline market as well as home shopping.
