  • This paper presents appliation of optical moire topography to mesuring force profiles of dies and clay models for practical use in the field of production engineering. Moire topography has been studied intensively during last few decades in the area of optical physics and its mathmatical theory has now been established. In this study, two optical configurations are suggested in which resultant moire fringes can be readily analyzed, so that 3D proviles of the models are constructed through a series of image processing by suing ma chine vision techniques. Experimental results demonstreated by using a micro- computer and CCD camera show 0.05mm measuring spatial resulution, so that the optical method can effectively adopted in order to overcome many difficulties arising when using the existing contact-type digitizing methods.

  • The new computer vision system which can reconstruct contours of parallel fault planes with horizon of 3-D curved objects has been developed. With the system, the shape of 3-D objects was measured by Simple Back-Projection algorithm which is a fundamental one in C.T.(Computed Tomography). And, the curvature in differential geometry characterizes any curve. Devising it, the method to represent each contour of 3-D curved objects with the system is described in this paper.

  • In this paper, we report 3D-simulations of a plasma etching process by employing cell-removal algorithm takes into account the mask shadow effect os well as spillover errors. The developed simulator haas an input interface to take not only an analytic form but a Monte Carlo distribution of the ions. The graphic user interface(GUI) was also built into the simulator for UNIX environment. To demonstrate the capability of 3D-SURFILER(SURface proFILER), we have simulated for a typical contact hole structure with 36,000($30{\times}40{\times}30$) cells, which takes about 20 minutes with 10 Mbytes memory on sun ultra sparc 1. as an exemplary case, we calculated the etch profile during the reactive ion etching(RIE) of a contact hole wherein the aspect ratio is 1.57. Furthermore, we also simulated the dependence of a damage parameter and the evolution of topography as a function of the chamber pressure and the incident ion flux.

  • The purpose of this study is to give the data neccesary for improving the planning of drainage structures, specially inverted siphons, in irrigation channels. With the samples of 15 drainage inlets, one drainage flume, 16 drainage inverted siphons and 6 drainage culverts in the 3 lines of irrigation channel under Chong-Won Irrigation Association, author abtained the following results. 1. It is presumed that design drainage discharge should be determined with some additional reserves, on the basis of the maximum rainfall intensity in local area and the size of drainage area on the topographical map, avoiding the way of eye measure. 2. Location of drainage inlet should be kept away from the place where topography can make lots of wash load, but when unavoidably allowing the inflow into irrigation channel, wash load outlet with even the purpose of drainage, or drainage flume in stead of drainage inlet should be taken account of. 3. It is presumed that drainage flume may be the structure which can perform its function from a structural point of view as far as topography permits. 4. Drainage inverted siphon should be avoided at any place as much as possible; a) In case that location of the siphon would be permitted only at paddy field, drainage area hauing the amount of discharge which requires more than 90cm in diameter could only be allowed. b) In this case, crest elevation of the tank of both inlet and outlet, at least, should not be lower than the surface level of paddy field. c) As far as topography and stratum permit, ratio of depth of outlet tank to head drop should be decreased as much as possible so that discharging efficiency of wash load could increase. d) In case of avoiding the setting of the siphon, irrigation aqueduct, irrigation inverted siphon, or drainage flume should be recommended in accordance with topography. 5. Discharging capability of wash load by drainage culvert appeared to depend hardly upon the diameter of the culvert, but greatly upon the location, specially near village, for there stones and dirts dumped may considerably be piled up. So, a counter plan for that is required.

  • In recent years, Korea has witnessed an increase to natural disasters such as landslides due to localized sudden and intensive rainfalls. Thus there have been researches on surface displacements to detect and monitor displacements in the areas prone to landslides by using high-precision and density numerical elevation data from LiDAR, which is an advanced 3D measuring equipment. However, the commercial software to process large-capacity LiDAR data, is expensive and difficult to be applied to specialized tasks such as analysis of landslide. In addition, there are no measures for many users to easily access diverse spatial information related to landslides and put it to intuitive uses. Thus this study developed an application program to analyze landslides by processing time series LiDAR data and intuitively serve many users with information about the topography and landslides of given areas. It analyzed the current state of landslides in the subject region through case study and proposed that 3D-based landslide and topography information can be served intuitively.

  • The local topography has a significant effect on the characteristics of seismic ground motion. This paper investigates the influence of topographic effects on the seismic response of a train-bridge system. A 3-D finite element model with local absorbing boundary conditions is established for the local site. The time histories of seismic ground motion are converted into equivalent loads on the artificial boundary, to obtain the seismic input at the bridge supports. The analysis of the train-bridge system subjected to multi-support seismic excitations is performed, by applying the displacement time histories of the seismic ground motion to the bridge supports. In a case study considering a bridge with a span of 466 m crossing a valley, the seismic response of the train-bridge system is analyzed. The results show that the local topography and the incident angle of seismic waves have a significant effect on the seismic response of the train-bridge system. Leaving these effects out of consideration may lead to unsafe analysis results.

  • A technique is presented for evaluating spinal deformity of a human back by extracting a spinal line based on 3-D topograpic reconstruction of the back from its moire image. A given moire image is differentiatedby DOG filter to extract moire stripes. The stripes are then assigned labels and the labels are interpolated by the Lagrange polynomial to yield the undulation of the back which gives a relative 3-D shape of the back. A valley is searched on the undulation near the middle part of the back and the valley line is finally extracted as an approximated spinal line. The mean differenceand the variance between the spinal line and the middle line are calculated and reported. Experiment is performed employing real moire images ofjunior-high school students' backs and some of the results are shown with discussion.

  • Due to harsh conditions of disaster areas, understanding of current feature of collapsed buildings, terrain, and other infrastructures is critical issue for disaster managers. However, because of difficulties in acquiring the geographical information of the disaster site such as large disaster site and limited capability of rescue workers, comprehensive site investigation of current location of survivors buried under the remains of the building is not an easy task for disaster managers. To overcome these circumstances of disaster site, this study makes use of an unmanned aerial vehicle, commonly known as a drone to effectively acquire current image data from the large disaster areas. The framework of 3D model reconstruction of disaster site using aerial imagery acquired by drones was also presented. The proposed methodology is expected to assist rescue workers and disaster managers in achieving a rapid and accurate identification of survivors under the collapsed building.

  • To visualize electrical activities in the cerebral cortex, we develop the 3D topographic mapping system based on PC. For this work, we utilize OpenGL tool and an optimized interpolation method known as 3D barycentric algotithm, which has a little computational complexity. OpenGL processes the 3D coordinates, and 3D barycentric algotithm interpolates to get overall EEGs with EEGs measured from finite electrodes on 3D. To prove validity of this algorithm on the PC-based system, we developped Windows-based 3D topographic mapping program using the Barycentric algorithm. The result showed that the performance of this system is comparable to that of workstation in terms of speed and precision. Also, the result of clinical test was the same as that of a EEG technician's analysis.
