  • An automatic mesh generation system with unstructured quadrilateral elements on trimmed NURBS surfaces has been developed.. In this paper, NURBS surface geometries in the IGES format have been used to represent model shape. NURBS surface is represented as parametric surface. So each surface could be mapped to a 2D parametric plane through the parametric domain. And then meshes with quadrilateral elements are constructed in this plane. Finally, the constructed meshes are mapped back to the original 3D surface through the parametric domain. In this paper, projection plane, quasi-expanded plane and parametric Plane are used as 2D mesh generation plane. For mapping 3D surface to parametric domain, Newton-Rhapson Method is employed. For unstructured mesh generation with quadrilateral elements on 2D plane, a domain decomposition algorithm using loop operators has been employed. Sample meshes are represented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Recently, as the appearance and exterior design of the construction structure are highlighted, the irregularly shaped structures are increasing in a construction facility. Many softwares provide a quantity take-off function of 3D object under BIM environment, however, they are focused on the limited function based on the solid modeling method. Because the vast geometric information of the curved surface is difficult to extract in the 3D objects that consist of major changes in vertical section shape as the irregularly shaped structures, it is difficult to express a 3D object as a solid model. On the other hand, the irregularly shaped structures can be expressed in relatively free in the surface model because the surface model consists of points, lines and surfaces. Accordingly, the surface modeling method is suitable for the modeling of large irregularly shaped structures. This study suggests a quantity take-off algorithm for the irregularly shaped structures using the surface modeling approach that is beneficial in the design work of structures. Some case projects are used for verifying the accuracy of the proposed method.

  • The study aims to propose a method that shall rapidly acquire 3D spatial information of the frequently changing city areas by using the low altitude aerial images taken by the UAV. The artificial 3D model of the artificial structures was constructed using the aerial image data photographed at the test area, calibration data of the non-metric camera and the results of the ground control point survey. Also, the digital surface model was created for areas that were changed due to a number of civil works. Through the above studies, the possibilities of constructing a 3D virtual city model, renewal of 3D GIS database, abstraction of changed information in geographic features and on-demand updating of the digital map were suggested.

  • In case of rough contact fatigue, the accurate calculation of surface tractions is essential to the prediction of crack initiation life. Accurate Surface tractions influencing shear stress amplitude can be obtained by contact analysis based on tile morphology of contact surfaces. In this study, to simulate rough contact under sliding condition, gaussian rough surface generated numerically in the previous study was used and to calculate crack initiation life in the substrate, dislocation pileup theory was used.

  • Stereovision is known to be one of the most important tools for robot vision systems. Previously, 2D active contour model has been applied to stereovision by defining the contour on the 3D space instead of image plane. However, the proposed model is still that of curve so that some complex shapes such as surfaces with high curvature can not be properly estimated because of occlusion phenomena. In this paper, the authors extend the curve model to the surface model. The surface is approximated by polygons and new energy function and its optimization method for surface estimation is proposed. Its effectiveness is examined by experiments with real stereo images.

  • Three 3D nonlinear finite-element models are developed to study the behavior of concrete beams and plates with and without external reinforcement by fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP). All three models are formulated based upon the 3D theory of elasticity. The stress model is modified from the element developed by Ramtekkar, et al. (2002) to incorporate material nonlinearity in the formulation. Both transverse stress and displacement components are used as nodal degrees-of-freedom to ensure the continuity of both stress and displacement components between the elements. The displacement model uses only displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom. The transition model has both stress and displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom on one surface, and only displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom on the opposite surface. The transition model serves as a connector between the stress and the displacement models. The developed models are validated by comparing the results of the analyses with an existing experimental result. Parametric studies of the effects of the externally reinforced FRP on the load capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and concrete plates are performed to demonstrate the practicality and the efficiency of the proposed models.

  • This study aimed to suggest a novel method of modeling a hearing aid ear shell based on Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) in the hearing aid ear shell manufacturing method using a 3D printer. In the experiment, a 3D external auditory meatus was extracted by using the critical values in the DICOM volume images, and the modeling surface structures were compared in standard type STL (STereoLithography) files which could be recognized by a 3D printer. In this 3D modeling method, a conventional ear model was prepared, and the gaps between adjacent isograms produced by a 3D scanner were filled with 3D surface fragments to express the modeling structure. In this study, the same type of triangular surface structures were prepared by using the DICOM images. The result showed that the modeling surface structure based on the DICOM images provide the same environment that the conventional 3D printers may recognize, eventually enabling to print out the hearing aid ear shell shape.

  • This paper presents a new rooftop surface estimation method from 3D line segments. 3D rooftop surface estimation is based on the hierarchical grouping and initiated by 3D line merging for the disconnected 3D line segments. Merged 3D lines are applied to the detection of rooftop by surface estimating technique. To estimate surfaces we detect L-corner and T-corner points, and find fixed reliable junction points. The hypothesis of the possible rooftop surfaces are estimated as polygonal surfaces by these fixed junction points and building's rooftop models are generated by testing the possible surfaces in terms of assumptions of building surface properties. We carried out experiments by synthetic images on Avenches data set and the experimental results showed that we could reliably build 3D model with 3D surfaces, errors of which came up with 0.4 - 1.3 meter, 2.5 times more accurate than the elevation date from the conventional area-based stereo.

  • In-depth knowledge of fabric microstructure is essential for understanding clothing comfort since it plays a significant role in heat and mass transfer between the human body and clothing. In this study, a novel method was employed for investigating 3D surfaces and solid construction characteristics of specific fabrics by using a reverse engineering technique. The surface construction data were obtained by a confocal laser scanning microscope and then manipulated by a 3D analysis program. Triangle mesh was used for connecting each 3D point, with clouds and fabric surface characteristics created by rendering techniques. For generating a 3D solid model, determinants of radius of curvature was used. According to the proposed method, actual surface expression of the real fabric was achieved successfully. The results from this methodology can be applied to the detailed analysis of clothing comfort that is highly influenced by the microstructure of the fabric.

  • Recently, in computer graphics, researches on 3D animations have been very active. One of the important research areas in 3D animation is animation of human being. Implicit surface model is convient for modeling objects composed of complicated surface such as 3D characters and liquids. Moreover, it can represent various forms of surfaces using a relatively small amount of data. In this paper, we propose a method of facial model generation using Implicit Primitive.
