  • A driver's emotion is a very important factor of safe driving. This paper classified a driver's emotion into 3 major emotions, can be occur when driving a car: Surprise, Joy, Tired. And It evaluated the classifier using Hidden Markov Models, which have observation sequence as bio-signals. It used the 2-D emotional plane to classfiy a human's general emotion state. The 2-D emotional plane has 2 axes of pleasure-displeasure and arsual-relaxztion. The used bio-signals are Galvanic Skin Response(GSR) and Heart Rate Variability(HRV), which are easy to acquire and reliable. We classified several moving pictures into 3 major emotions to evaluate our HMM system. As a result of driving simulations for each emotional situations, we can get recognition rates of 67% for surprise, 58% for joy and 52% for tired.

  • An anatomically detailed elderly human body model is under development. Using the anthropometric database of domestic nation-wide size survey, SizeKorea, a standard size and shape of 50th %tile elderly was constructed. Through the local recruitment process, a male volunteer with 71 years of age, 163cm of height and 63kg of weight has been selected. The exterior (skin) and interior (skeleton and organ) geometries were acquired from whole body 3D laser scan and various medical images such as CT, X-ray, and Ultrasonic of the volunteer. A particular attention has been paid into the combining process of exterior and interior geometries especially for joint articulation positions since they were measured at different postures (sitting vs. supine). A whole ribcage of PMHS which possessed similar anthropometry and age of standard 50th %tile elderly was prepared and dissected for the precise gauge of cortical rib bone thickness distributions. After completing the morphological construction of elderly human body, the finite element modeling will be processed by meshing elements and assigning mechanical properties to various biological tissues which reflect the aging effect.

  • A telerobot offers a more engaging and enjoyable interaction with people at a distance by communicating via audio, video, expressive gestures, body pose and proxemics. To provide its potential benefits at a reasonable cost, this paper presents a telepresence robot system for video communication which can deliver speaker's head motion through its display stanchion. Head gestures such as nodding and head-shaking can give crucial information during conversation. We also can assume a speaker's eye-gaze, which is known as one of the key non-verbal signals for interaction, from his/her head pose. In order to develop an efficient head tracking method, a 3D cylinder-like head model is employed and the Harris corner detector is combined with the Lucas-Kanade optical flow that is known to be suitable for extracting 3D motion information of the model. Especially, a skin color-based face detection algorithm is proposed to achieve robust performance upon variant directions while maintaining reasonable computational cost. The performance of the proposed head tracking algorithm is verified through the experiments using BU's standard data sets. A design of robot platform is also described as well as the design of supporting systems such as video transmission and robot control interfaces.

  • Under experimental conditions, UVB radiation, a type of ultra violet radiation, has shown to .elate with the occurrence of skin erythema (sun-burn) in human and skin cancer in experimental animal. Cumulative exposure to UVB is also believed to be at least partly responsible for the 'aging' process of the skin in human. It has also been observed to have an effect of altering DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). UVB radiation is both an initiator and a promoter of non-melanoma skin cancer. Meta-analysis is a new discipline that critically reviews and statistically combines the results of previous researches. A recent review of meta-analysis in the field of public health emphasized its growing importance. Using a meta-analysis in this study, we explored more reliable dose-response relationships between UVB radiation and skin cancer incidence. We estimated skin cancer incidence using measured UVB radiation dose at a local area of Seoul (Shin chou-dong). The studies showing the dose-response relationships between UVB radiation and non-melanoma skin cancer incidence were searched and selected for a meta-analysis. The data for 7 reported epidemiological studies of three counties (USA, England, Australia) were pooled to estimated the risk. We estimated rate of incidence change of skin cancer using pooled data by meta-analysis method, and exponential and power models. Using either model, the regression coefficients for UVB did not differ significantly by gender and age. In each analysis of variance, non-melanoma skin cancer incidence after removing the gender and age and UVB effects was significant (p>0.01). The coefficients for UVB dose were estimated $2.07\times10^{-6}$ by the exponential model and 2.49 by the power model. At a local area of Seoul (Shinchon-Dong), BAF value were estimated 1.90 and 2.51 by the exponential and power model, respectively. The estimated BAP value were increased statistical power than that of primary studies that using a meta-analysis method.

  • Background: Ginseng extracts and ginseng-fermented products are widely used as functional cosmetic ingredients for their whitening and antiwrinkle effects. Recently, increasing attention has been given to bioactive metabolites isolated from endophytic fungi. However, little is known about the bioactive metabolites of the fungi associated with Panax ginseng Meyer. Methods: An endophytic fungus, Penicillium sp. SNF123 was isolated from the root of P. ginseng, from which acremonidin E was purified. Acremonidin E was tested on melanin synthesis in the murine melanoma cell line B16F10, in the human melanoma cell line MNT-1, and in a pigmented 3D-human skin model, Melanoderm. Results: Acremonidin E reduced melanogenesis in α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-stimulated B16F10 cells with minimal cytotoxicity. qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated that acremonidin E downregulated melanogenic genes, including tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP-1), while their enzymatic activities were unaffected. The antimelanogenic effects of acremonidin E were further confirmed in MNT-1 and a pigmented 3D human epidermal skin model, Melanoderm. Immunohistological examination of the Melanoderm further confirmed the regression of both melanin synthesis and melanocyte activation in the treated tissue. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that acremonidin E, a bioactive metabolite derived from a fungal endophyte of P. ginseng, can inhibit melanin synthesis by downregulating tyrosinase, illuminating the potential utility of microorganisms associated with P. ginseng for cosmetic ingredients.

  • Autophagy is essential for regulating hair growth. Accordingly, we developed autophagy activator ICP5249 (pentasodium tetracarboxymethyl palmitoyl dipeptide) and investigated its potential role in hair growth. We evaluated its effect on hair growth using in vitro human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) culture model, human hair follicles (hHFs) organ culture model, and telogenic mouse model. ICP5249 increased hDPCs proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) expression. It also increased microtubule-associated protein (MAP) light chain 3-II (LC3-II) expression and AMP-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) and unc-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) phosphorylation in hDPCs. ICP5249 extended the length of hHFs and increased LC3-II please revised from LC3 II to LC3-II in all manuscript expression. Consistently, ICP5249 also significantly increased hair growth area, dermis thickness, and anagen and telogen ratio in telogenic mice. Furthermore, it upregulated Ki-67 and LC3-II expression and AMPKα phosphorylation on the mice's dorsal skin. To investigate whether AMPK regulates ICP5249-induced hair growth, following treatment with the compound C, AMPK inhibitor, the activity of ICP5249 was evaluated. The effects of ICP5249 on hair growth were assessed following pretreatment with the AMPK inhibitor compound C. The results showed that compound C suppressed ICP5249-mediated proliferation and hair inductivity in hDPCs. Additionally, compound C inhibited ICP5249-mediated hair growth area, dermis thickness, anagen and telogen ration, and LC3-II expression in mice, suggesting that ICP5249 promotes hair growth by modulating autophagy, with AMPKα playing a regulatory role in this process. Taken together, we demonstrate that ICP5249 has the potential as an ingredient for improving hair growth.

  • This study aims to examine for efficient production methods of custom-tailored clothing and application of 3D virtual clothing system in custom-tailored clothing market, by producing and analyzing both real clothing and 3D virtual clothing. For this study, a middle-aged woman is selected as the subject figure and one-piece is selected as the experimental clothes item. In real clothing, I conducted the wearing evaluation for experts and the subject figure. And In the virtual clothing, I conducted the wearing evaluation with i-Designer using 3D virtual clothing on simulation program. There are some differences between the data from body scanning and the real body size. In the custom-tailored clothing market in which the fitness is important, the research which measures the more exact data is needed. And in the case of complicate design, the functions which measure the activity and the fitness variously and correct the parts of curves are needed. This study experiments the availability of application of 3D Virtual Clothing System in custom-tailored clothing market by selecting one-piece as the experimental clothes item. So the follow-up studies for the other designs and fabrics are needed. Also, if the studies for checking the clothes pressure, the amount of composure, the space between skin and clothing when the virtual model wearing clothes is walking or shaking his arms are proceeding, then 3D virtual clothing System is applicable in custom-tailored clothing market. But there are some restrictions and lack of education in virtual clothing System yet, and it makes hard for workers in clothing market to use it in real production. However, 3D virtual clothing System will be practical in real market if there would be more research on its usability and practicality, and workers in clothing market can be easily educated on techniques of 3D virtual clothing system.

  • The antioxidant activities of 6 solvent extracts of Artemisia capillaris were evaluated in a dintroflurobenzen (DNFB)-induced allergic mouse model. In vitro antioxidant activities were determined using DPPH and the FRAP test. Methanol (DPPH: 85.87%, FRAP: 1.772) and $dH_2O$ (DPPH: 60.69%, FRAP: 3.185) extracts showed the highest antioxidant activities compared with other solvents (ethyl acetate 41.81%, 0.407, hexane 8.37%, 0.328, etc.). In addition, we tested atopic dermatitis (AD)-like skin lesions in mice treated with DNFB. The methanol extract of A. capillaris on the AD-like skin lesions in DNFB-induced atopy inhibited ear thickness increases (47%) and the skin lesions (45%) compared with a positive control (methanol). The results suggest that they have potential as natural antioxidants and allergy-improving substances and that they may be valuable materials in the functional food or cosmeceutical industry.
