Owing to the advent of ubiquitous computing technologies, the concept of Intelligent Environments has emerged, as an alternative approach to overcome the limitation of the built environment. Intelligent Environments can be more responsive to user-and context-specific human activities by automatically and dynamically modifying their settings without explicit human intervention. However, the conventional approach to the development of Intelligent Environments has mainly focused on the technical issues without paying much attention to the dynamic interrelationship between the user and the built environment. Therefore, differing or conflicting needs of multiple simultaneous users remain unresolved. The objective of this study is to present types of environmental conflicts and their resolution through agent collaboration and negotiation. For the demonstration and validation of the conflict resolution process, a set of hypothetical test cases is simulated in a 3D test environment. The result of the case simulations shows that the proposed approach is computationally feasible and applicable to the development of Intelligent Environments, and, furthermore, it can overcome the drawback of the conventional approach.
In this paper, we present a resolution-enhanced computational integral imaging reconstruction method by using boundary folding mirrors. In the proposed method, to improve the resolution of the computationally reconstructed 3D images, the direct and reflected light information of the 3D objects through a lenslet array with boundary folding mirrors is recorded as a combined elemental image array. Then, the ray tracing method is employed to synthesize the regular elemental image array by using a combined elemental image array. From the experimental results, we can verify that the proposed method can improve the visual quality of the computationally reconstructed 3D images.
This paper describes low temperature poly-Si (LTPS) TFT system on glass (SOG) technology developed in NEC. This paper presents a method to convert 3D CAD model to an appropriate analysis model using wrap-around, smooth-out and thinning operators that have been originally developed to realize the multi-resolution modeling. Wrap-around and smooth-out operators are used to simplify 3D model, and thinning operator is to reduce the dimension of a target object with simultaneously decomposing the simplified 3D model to 1D or 2D shapes. By using the simplification and dimension-reduction operations in an appropriate way, the user can generate an analysis model that matches specific applications. The advantage of this method is that the user can create optimized analysis models of various simplification levels by selecting appropriate number of detailed features and removing them.

This paper presents a prototype of high resolution 3D display with a new principle. We have proposed a new 3D display which has the features of both Integral Imaging (II) and volumetric display. The proposed display consists of two lens arrays and a thin volumetric display. When the viewer watches a thin volumetric display through two lens array, he can perceive a thick 3D image. In other words the two lens arrays can play a role of a convex lens which has a large diameter as a amplification of a depth. The advantage of the proposed display is that it has higher resolution than II and it is smaller than volumetric display with a large convex lens. In this paper, we show a detail of a prototype 3D display. We took various errors into consideration when we simulated 3D display and we found suitable lenses parameter from the simulation result. Then we confirm that the prototype will be able to reconstruct 3D images.

Various techniques have been developed for efficient compression of stereoscopic 3D videos. Mixed-resolution based approach is one representative bit-rate saving method based on the characteristics of human visual system that the mixed-resolution stereoscopic videos are perceived close to the higher resolution. However, when the difference between the left and right image resolutions is bigger than a certain threshold level, it causes the perceived quality degradation of the 3D images. Subsequently, several researches tried to find the correlation between the difference in resolution and the level of the perceived quality degradation, but they conducted the experiments just considering the difference in resolution without considering the viewing distances, so thereby different results were retrieved from test to test. In this work, we calculated the optimal viewing distance based on the human visual system, and conducted the subjective tests with the calculated viewing distance. With the results, we demonstrate that the fixed and mobile hybrid 3DTV, which is based on mixed-resolution stereoscopic images, can provide the high quality 3D services.
Today's commercial high resolution satellite imagery such as IKONOS and QuickBird, offers the potential to extract useful spatial information for geographical database construction and GIS applications. Recognizing this potential use of high resolution satellite imagery, KARI is performing a project for developing Korea multipurpose satellite 3(KOMPSAT-3). Therefore, it is necessary to develop techniques for various GIS applications of KOMPSAT-3, using similar high resolution satellite imagery. As fundamental studies for this purpose, we focused on the extraction of 3D spatial information and the update of existing GIS data from QuickBird imagery. This paper examines the scheme for rectification of high resolution image, and suggests the convenient semi-automatic algorithm for extraction of 3D building information from a single image. The algorithm is based on triangular vector structure that consists of a building bottom point, its corresponding roof point and a shadow end point. The proposed method could increase the number of measurable building, and enhance the digitizing accuracy and the computation efficiency.
An efficient modeling and management of a large amount of surface data for a wide rage of geographic information play an important role in determining the functionality of 3D geographic information system. It has been put many efforts to design and manage an effective way to enhence the manipulation of the data by considering geometry type and data structures. Recently, DEM(Data Elevation Model) and TIN(Triangulated Irregular Network) are used for representing surface data. In this paper, we propose a 3D data processing method. The method utilizes the major properties of DEM and TIN, respectively. Furthermore, by approximating DEM with a TIN of an appropriate resolution, we can support a fast and realistic surface modeling. We implement the structure with the following 4 level stages. The first is an optimal resolution of DEM which represent all of wide range of geographic data. The second is the full resolution DEM which is a subarea of original data generated by user's selection in our implemeatation. The third is the TIN approximation of this data with a proper resolution determined by the relative position with the camera. And the last step is multi-resolution TIN data whose resolution is dynamically decided by considering which direction user take notice currently. Specially, the TIN of the last step is designed for realtime camera navigation. By using the structure we implemented realtime surface clipping, efficient approximation of height field and the locally detailed surface LOD(Level of Detail). We used the initial 10-meter sampling DEM data of Seoul, KOREA and implement the structure to the 3D Virtual GIS based on the Internet.

For given 3D geographic data which is usually of DEM(Data Elevation Model) format, we have to represent and manipulate the data in various ways. For example, we have to draw a part of them in drawing canvas. To do this we give users a way of selecting area they want to visualize. And we have to give a base tool for users to select the local area which can be chosen for some geographic operation. In this paper, we propose a 3D data processing method for representation and manipulation. The method utilizes the major properties of DEM and TIN(Triangular Irregular Network), respectively. Furthermore, by approximating DEM with a TIN of an appropriate resolution, we can support a fast and realistic surface modeling. We implement the structure with the following 4 level stages. Micro computed tomography (micro-CT) has been used for in vivo animal study owing to its noninvasive and high spatial resolution capability. However, the sizes of existing detectors for micro-CT systems are too small to obtain whole-body images of a small animal object with $\sim$10 micron resolution and a part of its bones or other organs should be extracted. So, we have introduced the zoom-in micro-tomography technique which can obtain high-resolution images of a local region of an live animal object without extracting samples. In order to verify our zoom-in technique, we performed in vivo animal bone study. We prepared some SD (Sprague-Dawley) rats for making osteoporosis models. They were divided into control and ovariectomized groups. Again, the ovariectomized group is divided into two groups fed with normal food and with calcium-free food. And we took 3D tomographic images of their femurs with 20 micron resolution using our zoom-in tomography technique and observed the bone changes for 12 weeks. We selected ROI (region of interest) of a femur image and applied 2D FDT (fuzzy distance transform) to measure the trabecular bone thickness. The measured results showed obvious bone changes and big differences between control and ovariectomized groups. However, we found that the reliability of the measurement depended on the selection of ROI in a bone image for thickness calculation. So, we extended the method to 3D FDT technique. We selected 3D VOI (volume of interest) in the obtained 3D tomographic images and applied 3D FDT algorithm. The results showed that the 3D technique could give more accurate and reliable measurement.
