We applied SP monitoring and resistivity surveys using the pole-pole electrode array to seawater leakage problems in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment to estimate and detect the zone of seawater leakage. The embankment is generally affected by tidal variation and has low resistivity characteristics due to the high saturation of seawater. For this reason, SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity surveys, which are relatively more effective to the conductive media, were carried out to delineate the leakage zones of sea water through the embankment. We checked out electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature variations along the inner part of Youngsan estuary dam to detect the zone of seawater leakage and found that the measured EC value agreed to that of seawater in the leakage zone and the temperature was lower than that of the vicinity of leakage zone. SP monitoring results were coincided with tidal variations at each embankment. At the leakage zones in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment, SP anomalies are in the range of -60~-85 mV and -20~-50 mV, respectively, and true resistivity values obtained by 2-D inversion are 3~15 ohm-m and below 0.3 ohm-m, respectively. Both SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity method are found to be quite effective for investigation of seawater leakage zones in the embankment.
The complex resistivity method is an exploration technique that can obtain various characteristic information of underground media by measuring resistivity and phase in the frequency domain, and its utilization has recently increased. In this paper, a three-dimensional inversion algorithm for the CR data was developed to increase the utilization of this method. The Poisson equation, which can be applied when the electromagnetic coupling effect is ignored, was applied to the modeling, and the inversion algorithm was developed by modifying the existing algorithm by adopting comlex variables. In order to increase the stability of the inversion, a technique was introduced to automatically adjust the Lagrangian multiplier according to the ratio of the error vector and the model update vector. Furthermore, to compensate for the loss of data due to noisy phase data, a two-step inversion method that conducts inversion iterations using only resistivity data in the beginning and both of resistivity and phase data in the second half was developed. As a result of the experiment for the synthetic data, stable inversion results were obtained, and the validity to real data was also confirmed by applying the developed 3D inversion algorithm to the analysis of field data acquired near a hydrothermal mine.
Electric and electromagnetic surveys were conducted to investigate the deep structure of the Ulsan fault in Ipsil area, south of Kyeongju. On this study, especially high-frequency magnetotelluric method of electromagnetic survey in the frequency range of 10~100,000 Hz was mainly employed to study the deep subsurface configuration. High-frequency MT survey was performed at 70 points of spacing 30~50 m, making 3.8 km survey line. As a survey result, a 2-km-depth 2-D cross-section was achieved. It shows vertical and horizontal subsurface variations of resistivity values. Near-surface layer having low resistivity value becomes thicker eastward up to 800m. There is a steep low resistivity zone in the west side of survey line, and there exists two low resistivity zones dipping west in the east side of survey line. Two low resistivity zones are interpreted to be related to major movement pattern of the Ulsan fault. This suggests that major fault lines are developed on both peripheral sides of the broad fault zone.
In field surveys using the dipole-dipole electrical resistivity method, we often encounter negative apparent resistivity. The term 'negative apparent resistivity' refers to apparent resistivity values with the opposite sign to surrounding data in a pseudosection. Because these negative apparent resistivity values have been regarded as measurement errors, we have discarded the negative apparent resistivity data. Some people have even used negative apparent resistivity data in an inversion process, by taking absolute values of the data. Our field experiments lead us to believe that the main cause for negative apparent resistivity is neither measurement errors nor the influence of self potentials. Furthermore, we also believe that it is not caused by the effects of induced polarization. One possible cause for negative apparent resistivity is the subsurface geological structure. In this study, we provide some numerical examples showing that negative apparent resistivity can arise from geological structures. In numerical examples, we simulate field data using a 3D numerical modelling algorithm, and then extract 2D sections. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the negative apparent resistivity can be caused by geological structures modelled by U-shaped and crescent-shaped conductive models. Negative apparent resistivity usually occurs when potentials increase with distance from the current electrodes. By plotting the voltage-electrode position curves, we could confirm that when the voltage curves intersect each other, negative apparent resistivity appears. These numerical examples suggest that when we observe negative apparent resistivity in field surveys, we should consider the possibility that the negative apparent resistivity has been caused by geological structure.
Electric resistivity monitoring was applied to evaluate the soft ground in reclaimed land in order to figure out the applicability of physical prospecting. For this, electrical resistivity monitoring data were acquired for total three months and analyzed those data with independent inversion, time-lapse inversion, and 4D inversion methods. The result was compared for various inversion methods so as to figure out what showed the soft soil most properly. Moreover, drilling and CPT(Cone Penetration Test) data were also used in order to find out if each of those inversion methods could distinguish either bed rock or the soft soil clearly. And according to the result, time-lapse inversion showed less inversion artifacts than independent inversion, so it could indicate the soft soil better. If data gained for a longer period than three months are used, 4D inversion has been found to be a more efficient analysis method than the time-lapse inversion method. Electrical resistivity monitoring on the soft soil has been found to be a useful method that can analyze the spatio-temporal electric state of the ground serially.
This paper describes 2.5D induced polarization (IP) modeling and inversion algorithms using complex resistivity. The complex resistivity method has merits for acquiring more valuable information about hydraulic parameters and pore fluid than the conventional IP methods. The IP modeling and inversion algorithms are developed by allowing complex arithmetic in existing DC modeling and inversion algorithms. The IP modeling and inversion algorithms use a 2.5D DC finite-element algorithm and a damped least-squares method with smoothness constraints, respectively. The accuracy of the IP modeling algorithm is verified by comparing its responses of two synthetic models with two different approaches: linear filtering for a three-layer model and an integral equation method for a 3D model. Results from these methods are well matched to each other. The inversion algorithm is validated by a synthetic example which has two anomalous bodies, one is more conductive but non-polarizable than the background, and the other is polarizable but has the same resistivity as the background. From the inverted section, we can cleary identify each anomalous body with different locations. Furthermore, in order to verify its efficiency to the real filed example, we apply the inversion algorithm to another three-layer model which includes phase anomaly in the second layer.
To test the applicability of resistivity survey methods for the archaeological prospection of a large-scale tumulus, a three-dimensional resistivity survey was conducted at the $3^{rd}$ tumulus at Bokam-ri, in Naju city, South Korea. Since accurate topographic relief of the tumulus and electrode locations are required to obtain a high resolution image of the subsurface, electrodes were installed after making grids by threads, which is commonly used in the archaeological investigation. In the data acquisition, data were measured using a 2 m electrode spacing with the line spacing of 1 m and each survey line was shifted 1 m to form an effective grid of 1 m ${\times}$ 1 m. Though the 3-D inversion of data, we could obtain the 3-D image of the tumulus, where we could identify the brilliant signature of buried tombs made of stones. The results were compared with the previous excavation results and we could convince that a 3-D resistivity imaging method is very useful to investigate a large-scale tumulus.
Geophysical survey for unconformity-type uranium deposit applied to this study area in Athabaska Basin, Canada were carried out airborne TEM and magnetic, resistivity-induced polarization (DC-IP), puser seismic reflection and well-logging method. The results of airborne survey interpreted the lithological boundary, geological structures, and conductors. Also, these results decided to main targets for ground DC-IP survey. The Low resistivity and the high chargeability slices of 3D modeling interpreted from DC-IP survey response for conductors related to hydrothermal alteration zones and fault-controlled graphitic zones occurring at the unconformity-type uranium deposit, and they confirmed by diamond drilling. Seismic results interpreted to lake bottom surface, alluvium layer and intra-sandstone faults. We suggest the resonable field data acquisition of DC-IP method on the land or the lake in Athabaska Basin.
Uiseong subbasin belonging to Kyungsang basin resulted from volcanic activity in the late Cretaceous. In this study, we carry out MT and gravity survey at the Hwasan caldera, which was formed of volcanic and abyssal rocks complex, then analyze and identify geological substructure. Potential survey such as gravity and magnetic survey has been mainly carried out in former studies, so depth information for understanding substructure was not enough. To complement a potential survey, we use MT method, which has high vertical resolution. Moreover we make a simple 2D model comparing with former study. The result of MT and gravity 2D modeling shows that this area is roughly composed of 3 layers; The bottom layer is a basement. In the second layer, intrusive rocks having high resistivity is placed along the ring faults and the sedimentary layer of low resistivity is inside caldera. The highest layer is alluvium. To comprehend the 3D structure of the Hwasan caldera, we perform 3D gravity inversion, and construct the 3D model from the result of 3D gravity inversion. MT responses are calculated by using the constructed 3D model and the 3D model of the Hwasan caldera's structure is suggested after comparing the calculated values with the observed values at MT line.

The Sambo mine is located in Hae-je Myeon, Moo-an Gun, Chollanamdo, which consists of host gneiss and rhyolite possessing quartzite veins with other compositions such as gold, silver, and sublimated sulfur. The ore grade estimated from the core was 0.05~10.9g/t or less in gold and 0.05~389g/t or less in silver, indicating a partial mineralization. The purpose of this paper is to understand the subsurface structures and the distribution of mineralized bodies in the Sambo mine using a combined method of Schlumberger, Wenner, and Dipole-di-pole resistivity surveys on the surface and the resistivity tomography survey in boreholes. The result of three-dimensional resistivity inversion showed that the mineralized body is extended to 240m long in the N10°~20°E direction, with 30m wide and 80 m thick from the surface. The low resistivity zones (<1,000ohm-m) determined from the resistivity image were in good agreement with the mineralized bodies and weak zones identified from the logged cores.
