The virtual Frisch-grid method for room-temperature radiation detectors has been widely used because of its simplicity and high performance. Recently, side electrodes were separately attached to each surface of the detectors instead of covering the entire detector surface with a single electrode. The side-electrode structure enables the measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) gamma-ray interaction in the detector. The positional information of the interaction can then be utilized to precisely calibrate the response of the detector for gamma-ray spectroscopy and imaging. In this study, we developed a 3D position-sensitive 5 × 5 × 12 mm3 cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detector and applied a flattening method to correct detector responses. Collimated gamma-rays incident on the surface of the detector were scanned to evaluate the positional accuracy of the detection system. Positional distributions of the radiation interactions with the detector were imaged for quantitative and qualitative evaluation. The energy spectra of various radioisotopes were measured and improved by the detector response calibration according to the calculated positional information. The energy spectra ranged from 59.5 keV (emitted by 241Am) to 1332 keV (emitted by 60Co). The best energy resolution was 1.06% at 662 keV when the CZT detector was voxelized to 20 × 20 × 10.
This paper presents a system for estimating the position of a magnet using a magnetic sensor. An algorithm is presented to analyze the waveform and output voltage values of the magnetic field generated at each position when the magnet moves and to estimate the position of the magnet based on the analyzed data. Here, the magnet is sufficiently small to be inserted into a blood vessel and has a micro-magnetic field of hundreds of nanoteslas owing to the small size and shape of the guide wire. In this study, a highly sensitive magneto-impedance (MI) sensor was used to detect these micro-magnetic fields. Nine MI sensors were arranged in a 3×3 configuration to detect a magnetic field that changes according to the position of the magnet through the MI sensor, and the voltage value output was polynomially regressed to specify a position value for each voltage value. The accuracy was confirmed by comparing the actual position value with the estimated position value by expanding it from a 1D straight line to a 3D space. Additionally, we could estimate the position of the magnet within a 3% error.
This paper describes a monocular PSD-based motion capture sensor to employ with commercial video game systems such as Microsoft's XBOX and Sony's Playstation II. The system includes a PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) and active infrared (IR) LED markers that are placed on the object to be tracked. The micro-controller calculates the 3D position of the markers using only the measured intensity and the 2D position on the PSD. A series of experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of our prototype system. From the experimental results we see that the proposed system has the advantages of the compact size, the low cost, the easy installation, and the high frame rates to be suitable for high speed motion tracking in games.
Motion capture systems are gaining popularity in entertainment, medicine, sports, education, and industry, with animation and gaming applications for entertainment taking the lead. A wide variety of systems are available for motion capture, but most of them are complicated and expensive. In the general class of optical motion capture, two or more optical sensors are needed to measure the 3D positions of the markers attached to the body. Recently, a 3D motion capture system using two Position Sensitive Detector (PSD) optical sensors was introduced to capture high-speed motion of an active infrared LED marker. The PSD-based system, however, is limited by a geometric calibration procedure for two PSD sensor modules that is too difficult for common customers. In this research, we have introduced a new system that used a single PSD sensor unit to obtain 3D positions of active IR LED-based markers. This new system is easy to calibrate and inexpensive.
This paper describes a monocular PSD-based motion capture sensor to employ with commercial video game systems such as Microsoft's XBOX and Sony's Playstation II. The system compact, low-cost, and only requires a one-time calibration at the factory. The system includes a PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) and active infrared (IR) LED markers that are placed on the object to be tracked. The PSD sensor is placed in the focal plane of a wide-angle lens. The micro-controller calculates the 3D position of the markers using only the measured intensity and 2D position on the PSD. A series of experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of our prototype system. From the experimental results we see that the proposed system's compact size, low-cost, ease of installation, and high frame rates are suitable for high speed motion tracking in games.
Perceiving a 3D moving target is important for automated machines including robots in a factory. Although stereovision or ultrasonic ranging is often employed for the purpose, the former requires high-cost systems, and the latter suffers from low-resolution. In this paper, we propose a PSD sensor array to acquire the 3D profile of an object conveyed by a belt. Rectangular parallelepiped target objects at random positions and orientations are assumed. Nine PSD sensors are configured in a $3{\times}3$ array above the belt, and fired in a sequence so that cross-talk can be avoided. Time gaps among sensor readings are compensated to get a result that is obtainable when sensors' measurements are made simultaneously along a sensing line. The system designed is tested with various objects in experiments.

Source localization in three-dimensional (3-D) wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is becoming a major research focus. Due to the complicated air-ground environments in 3-D positioning, many of the traditional localization methods, such as received signal strength (RSS) may have relatively poor accuracy performance. Benefit from prior learning mechanisms, fingerprinting-based localization methods are less sensitive to complex conditions and can provide relatively accurate localization performance. However, fingerprinting-based methods require training data at each grid point for constructing the fingerprint database, the overhead of which is very high, particularly for 3-D localization. Also, some of measured data may be unavailable due to the interference of a complicated environment. In this paper, we propose an efficient kernel based 3-D localization algorithm via tensor completion. We first exploit the spatial correlation of the RSS data and demonstrate the low rank property of the RSS data matrix. Based on this, a new training scheme is proposed that uses tensor completion to recover the missing data of the fingerprint database. Finally, we propose a kernel based learning technique in the matching phase to improve the sensitivity and accuracy in the final source position estimation. Simulation results show that our new method can effectively eliminate the impairment caused by incomplete sensing data to improve the localization performance.

With the rapid development of spatial infrastructure in US, Europe, Japan, China and India, there is no doubt that the next generation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will improve the integrity, accuracy, reliability and availability of the position solution. GNSS is becoming an essential element of personal, commercial and public infrastructure and consequently part of our daily lives. However, the applicability of GPS in supporting a range of location-sensitive applications such as location based services in an urban environment is severely curtailed by the interference of the 3D urban settings. To characterize and gain in-depth understanding of such interferences and to be able to provide location-based optimization alternatives, a high-fidelity 3D urban model of Melbourne CBD built with ArcGIS and large scale high-resolution spatial data sets is used in this study to support a comprehensive simulation of current and future GNSS signal performance, in terms of signal continuity, availability, strength, geometry, positioning accuracy and reliability based on a number of scenarios. The design, structure and major components of the simulator are outlined. Useful time-stamped spatial patterns of the signal performance over the experimental urban area have been revealed which are valuable for supporting location based services applications, such as emergency responses, the optimization of wireless communication infrastructures and vehicle navigation services.
The 3D position of pedestrians is a physical quantity used in various fields, such as automotive navigation and augmented reality. An inertial navigation system (INS) based pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR), hereafter INS-PDR, estimates the relative position of pedestrians using an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Since an INS-PDR integrates the accelerometer signal twice, cumulative errors occur and cause a rapid increase in drifts. Various correction methods have been proposed to reduce drifts. For example, one of the most commonly applied correction method is the zero velocity update (ZUPT). This study investigated the characteristics of the existing INS-PDR methods based on shoe-mounted IMU and compared the estimation performances under various conditions. Four methods were chosen: (i) altitude correction (AC); (ii) step length correction (SLC); (iii) advanced heuristic drift elimination (AHDE); and (iv) magnetometer-based heading correction (MHC). Experimental results reveal that each of the correction methods shows condition-sensitive performance, that is, each method performs better under the test conditions for which the method was developed than it does under other conditions. Nevertheless, AC and AHDE performed better than the SLC and MHC overall. The AC and AHDE methods were complementary to each other, and a combination of the two methods yields better estimation performance.
