This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin rods undergoing large rotational deformation. Rods are thin objects such as ropes and hairs that can be abstracted as 1D structures. Development of a satisfactory physical model that runs in real-time but produces visually convincing animation of thin rods has been remaining a challenge in computer graphics. We adopt the energy formulation based on continuum mechanics, and develop a modal warping technique for rods that can integrate the governing equation in real-time. This novel simulation framework results from making extensions to the original modal warping technique, which was developed for the simulation of 3D solids. Experiments show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.
In this paper, we develop a real time lip-synch system that activates 2-D avatar's lip motion in synch with an incoming speech utterance. To realize the 'real time' operation of the system, we contain the processing time by invoking merge and split procedures performing coarse-to-fine phoneme classification. At each stage of phoneme classification, we apply the support vector machine (SVM) to reduce the computational load while retraining the desired accuracy. The coarse-to-fine phoneme classification is accomplished via two stages of feature extraction: first, each speech frame is acoustically analyzed for 3 classes of lip opening using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) as a feature; secondly, each frame is further refined in classification for detailed lip shape using formant information. We implemented the system with 2-D lip animation that shows the effectiveness of the proposed two-stage procedure in accomplishing a real-time lip-synch task. It was observed that the method of using phoneme merging and SVM achieved about twice faster speed in recognition than the method employing the Hidden Markov Model (HMM). A typical latency time per a single frame observed for our method was in the order of 18.22 milliseconds while an HMM method applied under identical conditions resulted about 30.67 milliseconds.
We modeled fish school movements as a capture process in relation to the purse seine method using the three steps of the stimulus-response process (i.e., input stimuli, central decision-making and output reaction). Input stimuli of the model were categorized as either physical stimuli such as visual stimulus, sound stimulus, water flow, and weather or as biological stimuli such as species and size, swimming performance, sensual sensitivity, and presence of prey or predators. The output process determining the spatial orientation of the fish school for 3-D movements was based on swimming speed and angular change in the fish response, and these movements were animated as the relative geometry between the fish school and the purse seine. Simulations were carried out for skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) schools reacting to a pelagic purse seine in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Simulation results showed that escape ratios varied from 20 to 70% by the relevant ranges in the stimulus-response thresholds, swimming speeds, and angular changes of fish schools were similar to those observed in the field. Therefore, with knowledge of relevant parameters, this model can be used to predict capture and escape probabilities of purse seine operations for different fish species or conditions.

Most golfers believe that knowing yardages will improve their score. Certainly it helps with club selection. But, simple "Graphic" yardage guides being notorious for error and inaccuracies, which a serious golfer will pick immediately, only serve to erode the players enjoyment and ultimately, golf course satisfaction. Someone believes with low-level aerial photographic images, golfer will be impressed with the accuracy of the depiction, helping them play a more confident game. But, there are no mapping products in true 3-D available in the world that allows a golfer to determine shot distances in yards or meters. So, we suggest an lenticular technology for real 3-D display as a viable alternative to conventional image map solution. This technology is an image display method for the generation of multi-image effects like 3D visualization or animation. This methodology is cutting edge stereoscopic image which overcomes the limitation of conventional photo tech by recomposing and producing 3 dimensional images. A significant strength of this methods its versatility concerning display effects. The main use of the hardcopy 3-D lenticular displays is in the fields of science, education, planning, and representation. This paper gives a concise overview of the lenticular foil technology and describes the production of the true 3-D yardage book of golf courses. For this study, 3-D effects are achieved and evaluated with the lenticular display by incorporation multiple synthetic images based on digital topographic terrain model and by using the two images of the actual stereopair.

This paper describes verification of APR1400 reactor vessel by applying the system engineering approach, in which the design re-engineering method is used to check the design parameters of APR1400 RV (reactor vessel). The RV is classified as safety class 1 and therefore must adhere strictly to the rules of ASME BPVC section III, subsection NB and seismic category I. This study explores designing the RV by following the ASME guidelines and making a comparative study with the current design. To meet this objective we apply system engineering methodologies to structure the process and allow for verification and validation of the major RV design parameters such as thickness of RV. The structural thicknesses of various part of RV are determined as well as reinforcements on the RV major nozzles. A 3D virtual reality model was created based on the design parameters using CATIA V5 and animation using Dassault Composer V2016. A comparison of re-engineered ARP1400 RV and standard APR1400 RV was done to show which design parameters were taken more conservative approach.
In modern war, Intercept Performance of SAM(Surface to Air Missile) is gaining importance as range and precision of Missile and Guided Weapon on information warfare have been improved. An aerial defence system using Surface-to-air Radar and Guided Missile is needed to be built for prediction and defense from threatening aerial attack. When developing SAM, M&S is used to free from a time limit and a space restriction. M&S is widely applied to education, training, and design of newest Weapon System. This study was conducted to develop simulator for evaluation of Intercept Performance of SAM. In this study, architecture of Intercept Performance of SAM analysis simulator for estimation of Intercept Performance of various SAM was suggested and developed. The developed Intercept Performance of SAM analysis simulator was developed by C++ and Direct3D, and through 3D visualization using the Direct3D, it shows procedures of the simulation on a user animation window. Information about design and operation of Fighting model is entered through input window of the simulator, and simulation engine consisted of Object Manager, Operation Manager, and Integrated Manager conducts modeling and simulation automatically using the information, so the simulator gives user feedback in a short time.
This study is a model of research for the developing 3D character contents about facial expression as a sort of non-linguistic signs, focusing on an expression of emotion factors of a person. It contributes a framework for symbolic analysis about Human's emotions along with a general review of expression. The human face is the most complex and versatile of all species. For humans, the face is a ich and versatile instrument serving many different functions. It serves as a window to display one's own motivational state. This makes one's behavior more predictable and understandable to others and improves communication. The face can be used to supplement verbal communication. A prompt facial display can reveal the speaker's attitude about the information being conveyed. Alternatively, the face can be used to complement verbal communication, such as lifting of eyebrows to lend additional emphasis to stressed word. The facial expression plays a important role under the digital visual context. This study will present a frame of facial expression categories for effective manufacture of cartoon and animation that appeal to the visual emotion of the human.
This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin shells undergoing large deformation. Shells are thin objects such as leaves and papers that can be abstracted as 2D structures. Development of a satisfactory physical model that runs in real-time but produces visually convincing animation of thin shells has been remaining a challenge in computer graphics. Rather than resorting to shell theory which involves the most complex formulations in continuum mechanics, we adopt the energy functions from the discrete shells proposed by Grinspun et al. For real-time integration of the governing equation, we develop a modal warping technique for shells. This new simulation framework results from making extensions to the original modal warping technique which was developed for the simulation of 3D solids. We report experimental results, which show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.
In 3D animation most people adjust the moving motion of their characters on various terrains by using motion data acquired with the motion capture equipment. The motion data can be used to present real human motions naturally, but the data must be captured again to apply to the different terrains from those given at acquiring mode. In addition, there would be a difficulty when applying the data to other characters, in that case the motion data must be captured newly or the existing motion data must be heavily edited manually. In this paper we propose a unified method to generate human motions of walking and running for various terrains such as flat plane, inclined plane, stairway and irregular face. With these methods we are able to generate human motions controlled by the parameters : body height, moving speed, stride, etc. In the proposed methods, the positions and angles of joint can be calculated by using inverse kinematics, and we calculate the trajectory of the swing leg and pelvis according to the cubic spline. With these methods we were presented moving motions using a model of a human body.

As a means of overcoming the linguistic barrier between different languages in the Internet, a new sign-language communication system with CG animation techniques has been developed and proposed. In the system, the joint angles of the arms and the hands corresponding to the gesture as a non-verbal communication tool have been considered. The emotional expression, however, could as play also an important role in communicating each other. Especially, a comic expression is more efficient than real facial expression, and the movements of the cheeks and the jaws are more important AU's than those of the eyebrow, eye, mouth etc. Therefore, in this paper, we designed a 3D emotion editor using 2D model, and we extract AU's (called as PAU, here) which play a principal function in expressing emotions. We also proposed a method of generating the universal emotional expression with Avatar models which have different vertex structures. Here, we employed a method of dynamically adjusting the AU movements according to emotional intensities. The proposed system is implemented with Visual C++ and Open Inventor on windows platforms. Experimental results show a possibility that the system could be used as a non-verbal communication means to overcome the linguistic barrier.
