Depth from defocus estimates the 3D depth by using a phenomenon in which the object in the focal plane of the camera forms a clear image but the object away from the focal plane produces a blurred image. In this paper, algorithms are studied to estimate 3D depth by analyzing the degree of blur of the image taken with a single camera. The optimized object range was obtained by 3D depth estimation derived from depth from defocus using one image of a single camera or two images of different focus of a single camera. For depth estimation using one image, the best performance was achieved using a focal length of 250 mm for both smartphone and DSLR cameras. The depth estimation using two images showed the best 3D depth estimation range when the focal length was set to 150 mm and 250 mm for smartphone camera images and 200 mm and 300 mm for DSLR camera images.
This paper presents a 3D video content generation technique and system that uses the multi-view images and the depth map. The proposed uses 3-view video and depth inputs from the 3-view video camera and depth camera for the 3D video content production. Each camera is calibrated using Tsai's calibration method, and its parameters are used to rectify multi-view images for the multi-view stereo matching. The depth and disparity maps for the center-view are obtained from both the depth camera and the multi-view stereo matching technique. These two maps are fused to obtain more reliable depth map. Obtained depth map is not only used to insert a virtual object to the scene based on the depth key, but is also used to synthesize virtual viewpoint images. Some preliminary test results are given to show the functionality of the proposed technique.

In this paper, we present a multi-depth generation method using a time-of-flight (ToF) fusion camera system. Multi-view color cameras in the parallel type and ToF depth sensors are used for 3D scene capturing. Although each ToF depth sensor can measure the depth information of the scene in real-time, it has several problems to overcome. Therefore, after we capture low-resolution depth images by ToF depth sensors, we perform a post-processing to solve the problems. Then, the depth information of the depth sensor is warped to color image positions and used as initial disparity values. In addition, the warped depth data is used to generate a depth-discontinuity map for efficient stereo matching. By applying the stereo matching using belief propagation with the depth-discontinuity map and the initial disparity information, we have obtained more accurate and stable multi-view disparity maps in reduced time.
This paper proposes a serious game for rehabilitation training targeting old persons and patients for rehabilitation. The serious game suggested for rehabilitation training provides the whole body movement recognition-based interface using the 3D depth camera. When the user stands before the camera, it distinguishes the user from the background and then recognizes the user's whole body with 15 joints. By analyzing the changes of location and direction of each joint, it recognizes gestures needed for the game. The game contents consist of the games for upper limb training, lower limb training, whole body training, and balance training, and it was realized in both 2D and 3D games. The system suggested in this article works robustly even with the environmental changes using the 3D depth camera. Even with no separate device, the game recognizes the gestures only using the whole body movement, and this enhances the effect of rehabilitation.

In this paper,a new approach-using the linear movement of the lens location in a camera and focal distance in each location for the measurement of the depth of the 3-D object from several 2-D images-is proposed. The sharply focused edges are extracted from the images obtained by moving the lens of the camera, that is, the distance between the lens and the image plane, in the range allowed by the camera lens system. Then the depthin formation of the edges are obtained by the lens location. In our method, the accurate and complicated control system of the camera and a special algorithm for tracing the accurate focus point are not necessary, and the method has some advantage that the depth of all objects in a scene are measured by only the linear movement of the lens location of the camera. The accuracy of the extracted depth information is approximately 5% of object distances between 1 and 2m. We can see the possibility of application of the method in the depth measurement of the 3-D objects.
Depth data for is very important data for 3D display. Disparity and depth data makes users to feel 3D effect. We used stereo camera to measure depth and made fast algorithm to get in real time. This vision system can be substituted for expensive laser system.

A three-dimensional image capturing device and its signal processing algorithm and apparatus are presented. Three dimensional information is one of emerging differentiators that provides consumers with more realistic and immersive experiences in user interface, game, 3D-virtual reality, and 3D display. It has the depth information of a scene together with conventional color image so that full-information of real life that human eyes experience can be captured, recorded and reproduced. 20 Mega-Hertz-switching high speed image shutter device for 3D image capturing and its application to system prototype are presented[1,2]. For 3D image capturing, the system utilizes Time-of-Flight (TOF) principle by means of 20MHz high-speed micro-optical image modulator, so called 'optical resonator'. The high speed image modulation is obtained using the electro-optic operation of the multi-layer stacked structure having diffractive mirrors and optical resonance cavity which maximizes the magnitude of optical modulation[3,4]. The optical resonator is specially designed and fabricated realizing low resistance-capacitance cell structures having small RC-time constant. The optical shutter is positioned in front of a standard high resolution CMOS image sensor and modulates the IR image reflected from the object to capture a depth image (Figure 1). Suggested novel optical resonator enables capturing of a full HD depth image with depth accuracy of mm-scale, which is the largest depth image resolution among the-state-of-the-arts, which have been limited up to VGA. The 3D camera prototype realizes color/depth concurrent sensing optical architecture to capture 14Mp color and full HD depth images, simultaneously (Figure 2,3). The resulting high definition color/depth image and its capturing device have crucial impact on 3D business eco-system in IT industry especially as 3D image sensing means in the fields of 3D camera, gesture recognition, user interface, and 3D display. This paper presents MEMS-based optical resonator design, fabrication, 3D camera system prototype and signal processing algorithms.

In general, in the fields of computer vision, robotics, and augmented reality, the importance of 3D space and 3D object detection and recognition technology has emerged. In particular, since it is possible to acquire RGB images and depth images in real time through an image sensor using Microsoft Kinect method, many changes have been made to object detection, tracking and recognition studies. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the quality of 3D reconstructed images by processing images acquired through a depth-based (RGB-Depth) camera on a multi-view camera system. In this paper, a method of removing noise outside an object by applying a mask acquired from a color image and a method of applying a combined filtering operation to obtain the difference in depth information between pixels inside the object is proposed. Through each experiment result, it was confirmed that the proposed method can effectively remove noise and improve the quality of 3D reconstructed image.

Three dimensional (3D) position determination and motion recognition using a 3D depth sensor camera are applied to a developed penguin-shaped robot, and its validity and closeness are investigated. The robot is equipped with an Asus Xtion Pro Live as a 3D depth camera, and a sound module. Using the skeleton information from the motion recognition data extracted from the camera, the robot is controlled so as to follow the typical three mode-reactions formed by the operator's gestures. In this study, the extraction of skeleton joint information using the 3D depth camera is introduced, and the tracking performance of the operator's motions is explained.
