The objective of present paper is to apply a stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techiique for measuring the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. It is essential to measure 3-components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller. The out-of-plane velocity component was measured using the particle images captured by two CCD cameras in the angular displacement configuration.400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of few different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranged from the trailing edge to the region of one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were formed periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component has large values at the tip and trailing votices. With going downstream, the axial turbulence intensity and the strength of tip vortices were decreased due to the visous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction. The blade wake traveling at higher speed with respect to the tip vortex overtakes and interacts with tip vortices formed from the previous blade. Tip vortices are separated from the wake and show oscillating trajectory

Three-dimensional models of stenosis blood vessels were prepared using a 3D printer. The models included a straight pipe with axisymmetric stenosis and a pipe that was bent $10^{\circ}$ from the center of stenosis. A refractive index matching method was utilized to measure accurate velocity fields inside the 3D tubes. Three different pulsatile flows were generated and controlled by changing the rotational speed frequency of the peristaltic pump. Unsteady velocity fields were measured by a time-resolved particle image velocimetry method. Periodic shedding of vortices occurred and moves depended on the maximum velocity region. The sizes and the positions of the vortices and symmetry are influenced by mean Reynolds number and tube geometry. In the case of the bent pipe, a recirculation zone observed at the post-stenosis could explain the possibility of blood clot formation and blood clot adhesion in view of hemodynamics.

The effect of triangular multi-tabs attached at the perimeter of jet nozzle on flow structure in the near field was investigated experimentally. A stereoscopic PIV(SPIV) system was employed to measure three orthogonal velocity components of the 3-D turbulent jet. In this study, two different types of sharp-edged jet nozzle having 4, 8 tabs were tested at the Reynolds number of Re=10,000. SPIV measurements were carried out at 5 cross-sectional planes. Six hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each experimental condition and they were ensemble averaged to get spatial distributions of turbulent statistics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity. Entrainment rate of surrounding fluid into the tabbed jets was estimated using the measured 3-D velocity field data. The strong vortex structure was induced for the jet flow with 4 tabs, increasing entrainment rate.
We have evaluated the performances of the following six interpolation schemes used for window deformation in particle image velocimetry (PIV): the linear, quadratic, B-spline, cubic, sinc, Lagrange interpolations. Artificially generated images comprised of particles of diameter in a range $1.1{\leq}d_p\leq10.0$ pixel were investigated. Three particle diameters were selected for detailed evaluation: $d_p$=2.2, 3.3, 4.4 pixel with a constant particle concentration 0.02 $particle/pixel^2$. Two flow patterns were considered: uniform and shear flows. The mean and random errors, and the computation times of the interpolation schemes were determined and compared.

A stereoscopic particle tracking velocimetry (SPTV) technique based on the 2-frame hybrid particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) method was developed. The expansion of 2D PTV to SPTV is facilitated by the fact that the PTV method tracks individual particle centroids. To evaluate the performance and measurement accuracy of the present SPTV technique, it was applied to flow images of rigid body translation and synthetic standard images of jet shear flow and impinging jet flow. The data processing routine and measurement uncertainty of the SPTV technique are compared with those of conventional stereoscopic particle image velecimet.y (SPBV). In addition, the centroid translation effect of 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) is defined and its effect on SPIV measurements is discussed. Compared to the SPIV method, the SPTV technique has inherited merits of concise and precise velocity evaluation procedures and provides better spatial resolution and measurement accuracy.
Three dimensional flow characteristics in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor are investigated using PIV method. The combustors have two rectangular inlets that form 90 degree each other. Three guide vane is installed in each rectangular inlet to improve the flow stability. We made three cases of test combustors in which those inlet angles are 30 degree, 45 degree and 60 degree. Each combustor easily changes the size of combustor's recirculation zone with the replacement of combustors dome. The experiments are performed in the water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number in the case of Mach 0.3 at inlet. PIV software is developed to measure the flow field in the combustor and the accuracy of developed PIV program is verified with rotating disk experiment and standard data. The experimental results show that the two main streams from rectangular inlet collide near the plane of symmetry and generate two large longitudinal vortex, A large and complex three-dimensional recirculating flow is measured in the recirculation zone.
An experimental study was carried out in a three-dimensional cubic cavity driven by 2-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow for three kinds of Reynolds number, $10^4$, 3 $\times$$10^4$ and 5 $\times$$10^4$ based on the cavity width and cavity inlet mean flow velcoity. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system. Laser based illumination and two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm are adopted. Severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable at above Re = 3 $\times$$10^4$ Reynolds numbers and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet driving Poiseuille flow is collided with the clock-wise rotating main primary vortex at upper center area. Instant velocity profiles reveal that deformed forced vortex formation is observed throughout the separate two areas.
In the present study, we performed the velocity field measurement in a microchannel using a focal length variable micro liquid lens. The liquid lens is used as a beam expander in a micro-PIV system to acquire the scatter image of the seeded particle. A thin film-type micro liquid lens was made of PDMS material and it was attached on top of the 700-micron-wide working fluid supply channel trench. As a result, the focal length and contact angle of the liquid lens changed with variations in applied pressure.

In order to analyze the quantitative characteristics of acoustic streaming, experimental setup of 3-D stereoscopic PIV(particle imaging velocimetry) was designed and quantitative ultrasonic flow fields in the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source were measured. Utilizing acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration, surface temperature drop of cooling object was also measured. The study on smart cooling method by acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration was performed due to the empirical relations of flow pattern, average flow velocity, different gaps, and enhancement on cooling rates in the gap. Average velocity fields and maximum acoustic streaming velocity in the open gap between the stationary cylindrical heat source and ultrasonic vibrator were experimentally measured at no vibration, resonance, and non-resonance. It was clearly observed that the enhancement of cooling rates existed owing to the acoustic air flow in the gap at resonance and non-resonance induced by ultrasonic vibration. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap creates steady-state secondary eddy called acoustic streaming which enhances heat transfer from the heat source to encompassing air. The intensity of the acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration experimentally depended upon the gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator. The ultrasonic vibration at resonance caused the increase of the acoustic streaming velocity and convective heat transfer augmentation when the flow fields by 3D stereoscopic PIV and temperature drop of the heat source were measured experimentally. The acoustic streaming velocity of air enhancement on cooling rates in the gap is maximal when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which is specifically 12 mm.

This paper deals with interaction between two bubbles or particles and flow around them, visualized by a moving object flow image analyzer(MOFIA) consisting of a three-dimensional (3D) moving object image analyzer(MOIA) and two-dimensional particle image velocimetry(PIV). The experiments were carried out for rising bubbles or particles of various densities, sizes, and/or shapes in stagnant water in a vertical pipe. In the MOFIA employed, 3D-MOIA was used to measure particles or bubbles motion and PIV was used to measure fluid flow, The experimental results showed that the interaction was characterized by the shape, size and density of two particles or bubbles.
