  • A new type of auto-rotary PM mechanical flux-varying PM machine (ARPMMFVPMM) is proposed in this paper, which can overcome the problem where the air-gap magnetic field of a PM machine is difficult to freely adjust. The topology structures of the machine and the mechanical flux-adjusting device are given. In addition, the operation principle of flux-adjusting is analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the deformation of a spring with the speed variation is obtained by virtual prototype technology. Electromagnetic characteristics including the flux distribution, air gap flux density, flux linkage, electromagnetic-magnetic-force (EMF), and flux weakening ability are computed by 2D finite element method (FEM). Results show that the machine has some advantages such as the good field control ability.

  • In this paper, the radiated sound pressure induced by low velocity impact is obtained by solving the Rayleigh integral equation. For structurally radiated noise, the sound field is directly coupled to the structural motion. Therefore the impact response should be analyzed. It is well known that the presence of the delamination in a composite laminate introduces a local flexibility which changes the dynamic characteristic of the structure. The 2-D simplified delamination model is used to analyze the impact response. And the 3-D non-linear finite element model is developed using gap element to avoid the overlap and penetration between the upper and lower sub-laminates at delamination region. Predicted impact response using 2-D equivalent delamination model are compared with the numerical ones from the 3-D non-linear finite element model.

  • In general, a number of lifting lugs have been used in shipbuilding industry and the D-type lugs are mainly used. The aim of this paper is to increase the cycle of the use and to reduce the size of lifting lugs to introduce lightweight shackle. In this study, nonlinear elasto-plastic analysis has been performed to confirm the ultimate strength of lifting lugs. In order to evaluate the proper design-load distribution around lug eye, the contact force between lifting lug and shackle pin has been realized by gab element model. Gap element modeling and nonlinear analysis are carried out using the finite element program MSC/PATRAN & ABQUS. Additionally the ultimate strength tests were performed to verify the structural adequacy of newly designed lifting lug and to insure safety of it. The D-10, 15, 20 & 40 ton models which are mainly used in the block erection are selected in the strength test. According to the results of the analysis and strength test, the ultimate strength of the newly designed lifting lugs has been estimated to exceed 3 times of design working load.

  • Steam generator is one of the main equipments that affect safety and long term operation in nuclear power plants. Fluid flows inside and outside of the steam generator tubes and induces vibration. To prevent the vibration the tubes are supported by AVB (anti vibration bar). When the steam generator tube contact to AVB, it is damaged by the accumulation of wear and corrosion. Therefore studies are required to determine the effects of the gap between the steam generator tube and AVB. In order to obtain the stress and the displacement distributions of the steam generator tube, three dimensional finite element analyses were performed by using the commercial program ANSYS. Using the calculated the stress and the displacement distributions, the static residual strength of the steam generator tube can be evaluated. The results show that the stress and displacement of the steam generator tube increase significantly compared with the results from a zero-gap model.

  • This paper deals with an optimal angle error reduction method of magnetic position sensor using hall effect elements. The angle detection simulation for the magnetic position sensor is performed by 3 dimensional finite element method and Taguchi method, one of the design of experiments. The magnetic position sensor is required to generate ideal sine and cosine waveforms from its hall effect elements according to rotation angle for precise angle information. However, the output signals are easy to include harmonics due to uneven magnetic field distribution from permanent magnet in the air-gap in the vicinity of hall effect elements. For the Taguchi method, three design parameters related to position of hall effect elements and shape of back yoke are selected. The characteristics of optimal magnetic position sensor are compared with those of original one in terms of simulation as well as experiment. Finally, the performances of the motor adopting original model and optimal model are represented for the purpose of verification of motor performance due to signals from magnetic position sensor.

  • The rotor overhang is used to enhance the air-gap flux and improve the power density. Due to the asymmetry in the axial direction caused by the overhang, a time consuming 3D analysis is necessary when designing a motor with overhang. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an equivalent magnetic circuit model (EMCM) which takes account overhang effects without a 3D analysis by using effective air-gap length. The analysis time can be reduced significantly via the proposed EMCM. A reduction in the analysis time is essential for a preliminary design of a motor. In order to verify the proposed model, a 3-D finite-element method (FEM) analysis is adopted. 3-D FEM results confirm the validity of the proposed EMCM.

  • In order to obtain optimal design criteria and operating parameters, a Single-sided Linear Induction Motor (SLIM) is analysed by using a 2-D finite element method with magnetic and current vector potential. In the analysing procedures, the governing equation is derived from Maxwell's equation combined with the magnetic vector potential. As a forcing term, 3-phase voltage source is employed using the Kirchhoff's voltage law in order to look into effects of the unbalanced 3-phase currents and air gap flux density. Also, 2ndary eddy current distribution, longitudinal end and transverse edge effects are in turns visualized by flux lines in 3 different analysing planes as functions of frequency and input power.

  • Blind rivet nuts are increasingly used in automotive for the joining of sheets. Their application, however, requires appropriate design guides to prevent catastrophic events arising from the failure of joints. In this study, the shaft shape of a frequently used M8 blind rivet nut is optimized based on 3D numerical analysis of the blind rivet nut considering the characteristics of thread. The thread needs to be modeled to suitably consider the fastening of the M8 bolt after the crimping process. FE analysis showed that while the friction in the contact between crimp flange and plate has no significant effect on the crimp geometry, shaft thickness (t) and shaft height (h) are the most significant design variables. The parameter study including various combinations of t and h reveals that they affect the gap (the distance between the crimped flange and the plate that develops through riveting) and the load acting on the plate. The gap is an indicator of the tightening force. It is found that t is inversely proportional to the gap, and proportional to the load, whereas h is proportional to the gap and inversely proportional to the load. Based on our FE analysis results, we propose the range 0.062 < t/h < 0.1 to ensure sufficient fastening (high clamping load, small gap) of the M8 blind rivet nut. The design guide for determining the t/h ratio proposed in this study can be used for general quantitative analysis of the size and the t/h ratio of blind rivet nuts.
