In this study, we developed an analysis method of plate forming by induction heating and verified the effectiveness of the present method through a series of experiments. The phenomena of the induction heating is a 3D transient problem coupled with electromagnetic, heat transfer, and elastoplastic large deformation analyses. To solve the problem, we suggest a proper model and an integrated system. Using the present analysis model, we can estimate the plate deformation in heating without experiments and simulate the plate bending process of induction heating.
Aluminum die casting is an important manufacturing process for mechanical components. Die casting is known to be more accurate than other types of casting; however, post-machining is usually necessary to achieve the required accuracy. The goal of this investigation is to develop machining- free aluminum die casting. Improvement of the accuracy of planar and cylindrical parts is expected by correcting metal molds. In the proposed method, the shape of cast aluminum made with the initial metal molds is measured by 3D scanning. The 3D scan data includes information about deformations that occur during casting. Therefore, it is possible to estimate the deformation and correction amounts by comparing 3D scan data with product computer-aided design (CAD) data. We corrected planar and cylindrical parts of the CAD data for the mold. In addition, we corrected the planar part of the metal mold using the corrected mold data. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by evaluating the accuracy improvement of the cast aluminum made with the corrected mold.
In the present study, a fast grid deformation technique has been incorporated into the unsteady compressible and incompressible viscous flow solvers on unstructured hybrid meshes. An algebraic method based on the basis decomposition of normal edge vector was used for the deformation of viscous elements, and a ball-vertex spring analogy was adopted for inviscid elements among several spring analogy methods due to its robustness. The present method was validated by comparing the results obtained from the grid deformation and the rigid motion of entire grids. Fish swimming motion of an NACA0012 airfoil and flapping wing motion of a generic fighter were also simulated to demonstrate the robustness of the present grid deformation technique.
Lee and Kang measured side-necking deformation near a crack-tip for CT specimen using Stereoscopic Digital Speckle Photography and Digital Image Correlation. In this work the same technique was applied to SENB specimen. We happened to find that the deformation shape of the side-necking is similar to the one of plastic region estimated by McClictock using slip line theory. Based on volume constancy of plastic deformation as well as this finding, it is expected that a linear relationship holds between the volume of plastic deformation region and the one of side-necking upon the lateral surface of a specimen. To prove the idea, a preliminary study has been performed using 3-D finite element method on a model with modified boundary layer formulation. As the result, it is shown that the idea works well with acceptable error.

This study is predicted tool deformation by cutting forces and chip-tool interface temperature in machining process. Modeling of tool is made using 3D CAD software, finite element method is performed by cutting forces and temperature. Cutting forces and temperature used load conditions are predicted using the cutting force model based on machining theory. Experimental milling tests have been conducted to verify the cutting force model. Finally, this study is predicted cutting force components and temperature using cutting conditions, material property, tool geometry without experiment and tool deformation is predicted by cutting forces and temperature in machining process.

In this work, a nonlocal quasi-3D trigonometric plate theory for micro/nanoscale plates is proposed. In order to introduce the size influences, the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is utilized. In addition, the theory considers both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a trigonometric variation of all displacements within the thickness, and respects the stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without considering the shear correction factor. The advantage of this theory is that, in addition to considering the small scale and thickness stretching effects (${\varepsilon}_z{\neq}0$), the displacement field is modelled with only 5 unknowns as the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Analytical solutions for vibration of simply supported micro/nanoscale plates are illustrated, and the computed results are compared with the available solutions in the literature and finite element model using ABAQUS software package. The influences of the nonlocal parameter, shear deformation and thickness stretching on the vibration behaviors of the micro/nanoscale plates are examined.

The high temperature thermal attacks in welding can affect the residual stress of a frame for automotive assembly accompanying frame deformation. Also the residual stress can induce the negative effect on durability performance of the automobile. In order to analyze the frame deformation, the simplified test frame which had the similar shape (form) of the real automotive frame was fabricated. The contactless optical 3D scanner was used for the shape difference measurement of the frame between before and after the welding. The FE-model of the test frame was composed and the deformation and residual stress simulation were performed. The simulated results were compared with the measured results for the reference of the frame design following as the variation of welding sequency. The deformation shape of the frame by simulation was in good agreement with that by the experimental measurement. In addition, the optimized welding sequency with reduced deformation after welding could be achieved through these analyses.
The magnitude and distribution of tunnel deformation were widely discussed topics in tunnel engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element program was used for the analysis of various horseshoe-shaped opening expressway tunnels under different geologies. Two rock material models - Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown were executed in the process of analyses; and the results show that the magnitude and distribution of tunnel deformation were close by these two models. The tunnel deformation behaviors were relevant to many factors such as cross-sections and geological conditions; but the geology was the major factor to the normalized longitudinal deformation profile (LDP). If the time-dependent factors were neglected, the maximum displacements were located at the distance of 3 to 4 tunnel diameters behind the excavation face. The ratios of displacement at the excavation face to the maximum displacement were around 1/3 to 1/2. In general, the weaker the rock mass, the larger the ratio. The displacements in front of the excavation face were decreased with the increasement of distance. At the distance of 1.0 to 1.5 tunnel diameter, the displacements were reduced to one-tenth of the maximum displacement.
In this paper, a meshfree-enriched finite element method (ME-FEM) is introduced for the large deformation analysis of nonlinear path-dependent problems involving contact. In linear ME-FEM, the element formulation is established by introducing a meshfree convex approximation into the linear triangular element in 2D and linear tetrahedron element in 3D along with an enriched meshfree node. In nonlinear formulation, the area-weighted smoothing scheme for deformation gradient is then developed in conjunction with the meshfree-enriched element interpolation functions to yield a discrete divergence-free property at the integration points, which is essential to enhance the stress calculation in the stage of plastic deformation. A modified variational formulation using the smoothed deformation gradient is developed for path-dependent material analysis. In the industrial metal forming problems, the mortar contact algorithm is implemented in the explicit formulation. Since the meshfree-enriched element shape functions are constructed using the meshfree convex approximation, they pose the desired Kronecker-delta property at the element edge thus requires no special treatments in the enforcement of essential boundary condition as well as the contact conditions. As a result, this approach can be easily incorporated into a conventional displacement-based finite element code. Two elasto-plastic problems are studied and the numerical results indicated that ME-FEM is capable of delivering a volumetric locking-free and pressure oscillation-free solutions for the large deformation problems in metal forming analysis.

In this work, an efficient and simple quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory is developed for bending and vibration analyses of functionally graded (FG) plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundation. The significant feature of this theory is that, in addition to including the thickness stretching effect, it deals with only 5 unknowns as the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The foundation is described by the Pasternak (two-parameter) model. The material properties of the plate are assumed to vary continuously in the thickness direction by a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Equations of motion for thick FG plates are obtained within the Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and free vibration analysis are obtained for simply supported plates. The numerical results are given in detail and compared with the existing works such as 3-dimensional solutions and those predicted by other plate theories. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded plates resting on elastic foundation.
