The validity of 'modified overlay model' to describe the cyclic behavior of annealed 316L stainless steel at room temperature was investigated. Material parameters(~f$_{i}$, m$_{i}$b, η, E) fur the model were obtained through constant strain amplitude test. The strain amplitude dependency of elastic limit and cyclic hardening, which were the characteristics of this model, were considered. Eight subelements were used to describe the nonlinearity of the hysteresis loops. The calculated hysteresis curve in each condition (0.5%, 0.7%, 0.9% train amplitude test) was very close to the experimental one. Two tests, incremental step test and 5-step test, ere performed to check the validity of 'modified overlay model'. The elastic limit was saturated to the one of the highest strain amplitudes of the block in the incremental step test, so it seemed to be Masing material at the stabilized block. Cyclic hardening was successfully described in the increasing sequence of the strain amplitude in 5-step test. But, the slight cyclic softening followed by higher strain amplitude would not be able to simulate by'modified overlay model'. However, the discrepancy induced was very small between the calculated hystereses and the experimental ones. In conclusion,'Modified overlay model'was proved to be appropriate in strain range of 0.35%~ 1.0%..0%.

Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between STS 316L and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with GTAW have been evaluated in terms of microstructure, ferrite content, chemical analysis, hardness and corrosion resistance. Three heat inputs of 9.00, 11.25, 13.00kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with ER309 wire. Based on microstructural examination, the amount of vermicular type of ${\delta}$-ferrite was increased with increasing heat input due to the increase of Creq/Nieq in the second layer of welds. Based on the EDX analysis of weld metals, Cr and Ni content in the 2nd layer increased while those content in the first layer of welds decreased with heat inputs. Cellular solidification mode in the 1st layer and dendritic solidification mode in the 2nd layer due to different cooling rates were prevailed, respectively. Heat affected zone which formed hard microstructure showed higher hardness than the weld metal. The salt spray test of dissimilar metals weld joints showed that the carbon steel surfaces only corroded. The weight loss rate due to corrosion increased up to 100hours but it decreased above 100 hours. There was little difference in the weight loss caused by corrosion regardless of heat inputs.
Chromium nitride (CrN) samples with two different layer structures (multilayer and single layer) were coated on bipolar plates of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) using the reactive sputtering method. The effects with respect to layer structure on corrosion resistance and overall cell performance were investigated. A continuous and thin chromium nitride layer ($Cr_{0.48}\;N_{0.52}$) was formed on the surface of the SUS 316L when the nitrogen flow rate was 10 sccm. The electrochemical stability of the coated layers was examined using the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic methods in the simulated corrosive circumstances of the PEMFC under $80^{\circ}C$. Interfacial contact resistance (ICR) between the CrN coated sample and the gas diffusion layer was measured by using Wang's method. A single cell performance test was also conducted. The test results showed that CrN coated SUS316L with multilayer structure had excellent corrosion resistance compared to single layer structures and single cell performance results with $25\;cm^2$ in effective area also showed the same tendency. The difference of the electrochemical properties between the single and multilayer samples was attributed to the Cr interlayer layer, which improved the corrosion resistance. Because the coating layer was damaged by pinholes, the Cr layer prevented the penetration of corrosive media into the substrate. Therefore, the CrN with a multilayer structure is an effective coating method to increase the corrosion resistance and to decrease the ICR for metallic bipolar plates in PEMFC.
A low temperature plasma carburizing process was performed on AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel to achieve an enhancement of the surface hardness without degradation of its corrosion resistance. Attempts were made to investigate the influence of the processing temperatures on the surface hardened layer during low temperature plasma carburizing in order to obtain the optimum processing conditions. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_c$) phase, which contains a high saturation of carbon (S phase), was formed on all of the treated surfaces. Precipitates of chromium carbides were detected in the hardened layer (C-enriched layer) only for the specimen treated at $550^{\circ}C$. The hardened layer thickness of ${\gamma}_c$ increased up to about $65{\mu}m$ with increasing treatment temperature. The surface hardness reached about 900 $HK_{0.05}$, which is about 4 times higher than that of the untreated sample (250 $HK_{0.05}$). A minor loss in corrosion resistance was observed for the specimens treated at temperatures of $300^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ compared with untreated austenitic stainless steel. In particular, the precipitation of chromium carbides at $550^{\circ}C$ led to a significant decrease in the corrosion resistance. A diamond-like carbon (DLC) film coating was applied to improve the wear and friction properties of the S phase layer. The DLC film showed a low and stable friction coefficient value of about 0.1 compared with that of the carburized surface (about 0.45). The hardness and corrosion resistance of the S phase layer were further improved by the application of such a DLC film.

The present work investigated the dispersion behavior of $Y_2O_3$ particles into AISI 316L SS manufactured using laser cladding technology. The starting particles were produced by high energy ball milling in 10 min for prealloying, which has a trapping effect and homogeneous dispersion of $Y_2O_3$ particles, followed by laser cladding using $CO_2$ laser source. The phase and crystal structures of the cladded alloys were examined by XRD, and the cross section was characterized using SEM. The detailed microstructure was also studied through FE-TEM. The results clearly indicated that as the amount of $Y_2O_3$ increased, micro-sized defects consisted of coarse $Y_2O_3$ were increased. It was also revealed that homogeneously distributed spherical precipitates were amorphous silicon oxides containing yttrium. This study represents much to a new technology for the manufacture and maintenance of ODS alloys.
In order to verify the integrity of the first wall (FW) of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the fabricated Cu/SS mock-up is tested in the JAEA Electron Beam Irradiation Test Stand (JEBIS). To fabricate the Cu/SS mock-up, CuCrZr and 316L authentic stainless steel (SS316L) are used for Cu alloy and steel, respectively The hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is used as a manufacturing method with a $1050^{\circ}C$ and 150 MPa. The high heat flux (HHF) test is performed using an electron beam with a heat flux of $5MW/m^2$ and a cycle of 15-sec on time and 30-sec off time. The temperature measurement in the HHF test shows good agreement with the results obtained from ANSYS code analysis, which is used for determining the HHF test conditions.

The Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX) of a Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) is a core component that transfers the high heat of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in the VHTR to a hydrogen production plant. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute manufactured a lab-scale prototype of a Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger (PCHE) as a candidate for an IHX. In this study, as a part of a high-temperature structural integrity evaluation of the lab-scale PCHE prototype made of SUS316L, we carried out high temperature structural analysis modeling and macroscopic thermal and elastic structural analysis for the lab-scale PCHE prototype under helium experimental loop (HELP) test conditions as a precedent study prior to the performance test in HELP.

The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post-nitriding) offer the increase of both surface hardness and thickness of hardened layer and corrosion resistance than the individually processed low temperature nitriding and low temperature carburizing techniques. The 2-step low temperature plasma processes were carried out for improving both the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel. The influence of gas compositions on the surface properties during nitriding step were investigated. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_N$) was formed on all of the treated surface. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ and concentration of N on the surface increased with increasing both nitrogen gas and Ar gas levels in the atmosphere. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ increased up to about $20{\mu}m$ and the thickness of entire hardened layer was determined to be about $40{\mu}m$. The surface hardness was independent of nitrogen and Ar gas contents and reached up to about 1200 $HV_{0.1}$ which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample (250 $HV_{0.1}$). The corrosion resistance in 2-step low temperature plasma processed austenitic stainless steels was also much enhanced than that in the untreated austenitic stainless steels due to a high concentration of N on the surface.

The cyclic polarisation technique was applied to determine the corrosion, primary-passivation, transpassive, and protection potential of AISI 316L stainless steels immersed in 3550-ppm NaCl solution containing sulfate in the content up to 3000 ppm. The solutions were kept constant at $27^{\circ}C$ and saturated by laboratory air. The solution pH was varied from 3 to 11. Each type of potentials was plotted in function of pH and linked as lines to determine the different zones in the constructed potential-pH diagram. The predominant regimes of the immunity, general corrosion, perfect passivation, imperfect passivation, and pitting corrosion were determined based on those lines of potentials. Comparing to the potential-pH diagram of specimens immersed in the aerated and deaerated 3550-ppm NaCl solutions, the addition of 3000-ppm $Na_2SO_4$ to these solutions increased the overall, perfect and imperfect, passivation regime by shifting the transpassive-potential line to the noble direction. However, it also widened the imperfect passivation area. The addition of $Na_2SO_4$ did not significantly affect the corrosion potential. It was found that the dissolved oxygen tends to negatively shift the transpassive-potential and protection-potential lines at all studied pH. The considerable effect of dissolved oxygen on corrosion and primary-passivation potentials could not be observed.
