Corrosion Behaviors of Structural Materialsin High Temperature S-CO2 Environments

  • The isothermal corrosion tests of several types of stainless steels, Ni-based alloys, and ferritic-martensitic steels (FMS) were carried out at the temperature of 550 and $650^{\circ}C$ in SFR S-$CO_2$ environment (200 bar) for 1000 h. The weight gain was greater in the order of FMSs, stainless steels, and Ni-based alloys. For the FMSs (Fe-based with low Cr content), a thick outer Fe oxide, a middle (Fe,Cr)-rich oxide, and an inner (Cr,Fe)-rich oxide were formed. They showed significant weight gains at both 550 and $650^{\circ}C$. In the case of austenitic stainless steels (Fe-based) such as SS 316H and 316LN (18 wt.% Cr), the corrosion resistance was dependent on test temperatures except SS 310S (25 wt.% Cr). After corrosion test at $650^{\circ}C$, a large increase in weight gain was observed with the formation of outer thick Fe oxide and inner (Cr,Fe)-rich oxide. However, at $550^{\circ}C$, a thin Cr-rich oxide was mainly developed along with partially distributed small and nodular shaped Fe oxides. Meanwhile, for the Ni-based alloys (16-28 wt.% Cr), a very thin Cr-rich oxide was developed at both test temperatures. The superior corrosion resistance of high Cr or Ni-based alloys in the high temperature S-$CO_2$ environment was attributed to the formation of thin Cr-rich oxide on the surface of the materials.

  • Brazing is an indispensable manufacturing technology for liquid rocket engine. In this study, for LRE injector, stainless steel 316L was used of base metal and Ni based MBF-20 of insert metal. The brazing and diffusion was carried out under various conditions. There are solid phase and. residual liquid phase in the brazed joint. With increment of holding time, the amount of solid phase increased and the elements of base metal and insert metal compositionally graded. Boron diffused from insert metal came into base metal and made boride with Cr and Mo at the brazed joint of base metal and insert metal.

Finite Difference Analysis of Safe Load and Critical Time in a Four-Parameter Viscoelastic Column

  • A creep-buckling analysis is studied for a simply-supported viscoelastic column. The fluid-type four-parameter model is employed because of its general applicability to creep materials. Using the imperfection-based incremental approach, a nonlinear load deflection equation is derived. Safe load and critical (or life) time which characterize the stability of the viscoelastic column are obtained mathematically and interpreted physically. A finite difference algorithm is applied to solve the second-order differential equation of the viscoelastic stress-strain relation. Numerical calculation has been made and discussed far a SUS316 stainless steel column.

PEMFC 냉각 시스템의 물부식 방지에 관한 연구 (Study on Corrosion Problems in PEMFC Cooling System)

  • This study focuses on the corrosion problems of STS316(stainless steel 316) tube for the cooling system of PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) operation. Deionized water which is highly corrosive is used especially for cooling agent of PEMFC to eliminate electrical conductivity, The tensile stress analysis was performed to check the change of mechanical strength of cooling line and pH of the water was monitored for the observation of extent of corrosion at simulated PEMFC operating condition. When STS316 tube was exposed to deionized water for 500 hours, substantial cracks were found on the surface and the pH of water was decreased from 6.8 to 5.8. For prevention of corrosion problems, the STS316 was coated by three kinds of fluororesin such as PTFE, FEP and ETFE. Among the coating materials, PTFE was the most protective in corrosive environment and was maintained the mechanical strength. To lower the cost, the same experimental analyses were carried out for iron tubes and the result will be discussed in detail.

  • 금속 소재부품의 제조 형태가 복잡해지고 소비자의 요구가 다양함에 따라 금속 3D 프린팅 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 우주 발사체의 엔진 연소 노즐 부품에 적용 가능한 스테인레스 316L계 금속을 3D 프린팅 방식으로 제조하고 이에 대한 기계적, 화학적 특성 상관 연구를 진행하였다. 금속 3D 프린팅 기술은 레이저원을 이용하여 분말을 급속 용융과 응고를 반복됨에 따라 기존의 주조 응고와는 다른 미세 조직 형태를 나타내고, 이에 따라 기계적 물성이 변화함을 관찰하였다. 특히 개재물의 존재에 따라 기계적 특성이 변화하고 공정 조건의 변화에 따라 기공의 형태 및 위치등이 변화하는 것을 확인하였다.

  • The corrosion damage of materials in marine environment mainly occurs by Cl- ions due to the breakdown of passive films. Additionally, various characteristics in seawater such as salinity, temperature, immersion time, flow rate, and biological activity also affect corrosion characteristics. In this study, the corrosion characteristics of stainless steels (STS 304 and STS 316L) and anodized aluminum alloys (AA 3003 and AA 6063) were evaluated with seawater temperature parameters. A potentiodynamic polarization experiment was conducted in a potential range of -0.25 V to 2.0 V at open circuit potential (OCP). Corrosion current density and corrosion potential were obtained through the Tafel extrapolation method to analyze changes in corrosion rate due to temperature. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by measuring weight loss before/after the experiment and also observing surface morphology through a scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and 3D microscopy. Weight loss, maximum damage depth and pitting damage increased as seawater temperature increased, and furthermore, the tendency of higher corrosion current density with an increase of temperature attributed to an increase in corrosion rate. There was lower pitting damage and lower corrosion current density for anodized aluminum alloys than for stainless steels as the temperature increased.

A review of chloride induced stress corrosion cracking characterization in austenitic stainless steels using acoustic emission technique

  • Austenitic stainless steels (ASS) are extensively employed in various sectors such as nuclear, power, petrochemical, oil and gas because of their excellent structural strength and resistance to corrosion. SS304 and SS316 are the predominant choices for piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, nuclear reactor core components and support structures, but they are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-rich environments. Over the course of several decades, extensive research efforts have been directed towards evaluating SCC using diverse methodologies and models, albeit some uncertainties persist regarding the precise progression of cracks. This review paper focuses on the application of Acoustic Emission Technique (AET) for assessing SCC damage mechanism by monitoring the dynamic acoustic emissions or inelastic stress waves generated during the initiation and propagation of cracks. AET serves as a valuable non-destructive technique (NDT) for in-service evaluation of the structural integrity within operational conditions and early detection of critical flaws. By leveraging the time domain and time-frequency domain techniques, various Acoustic Emission (AE) parameters can be characterized and correlated with the multi-stage crack damage phenomena. Further theories of the SCC mechanisms are elucidated, with a focus on both the dissolution-based and cleavage-based damage models. Through the comprehensive insights provided here, this review stands to contribute to an enhanced understanding of SCC damage in stainless steels and the potential AET application in nuclear industry.

열간압연 클래드강의 맞대기용접부 내식성 및 용접성 평가 (Evaluation of Corrosion Resistance and Weldability for the Butt Welding Zone of Hot Rolled Clad Steel Plates)

  • We have investigated the traits of clad metals in hot-rolled clad steel plates, including the sensitization and mechanical properties of STS 316 steel plate and carbon steel (A516), under various specific circumstances regarding post heat treatment, multilayered welds, and thick or repeated welds for repair. For evaluations, sectioned weldments and external surfaces were investigated to reveal the degree of sensitization by micro vickers hardness, tensile, and etching tests the results were compared with those of EPR tests. The clad steel plates were butt-welded using FCAW and SAW with the time of heat treatment as the variable, a that was conducted at $625^{\circ}C$, for 80, 160, 320, 640, and 1280 min. Then, the change in corrosion resistance was evaluated in these specimens. With carbon steel (A516), as the heat treatment time increased, the annealing effect caused the tensile strength to decrease. The micro-hardness gradually increased and decreased after 640 min. The elongation and contraction of the area also increased gradually. The oxalic acid etch test and EPR test on STS316 and the clad metal showed STEP structure and no sensitization. From the test results on multi-layered and repair welds, it could be concluded that there is no effect on the corrosion resistance of clad metals. The purpose of this study was to suggest some considerations for developing on-site techniques to evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels.
