  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chitosan on the shelf-life and quality of Paeksulkis(Korea rice cake). Paeksulgis containing 0-0.5% chitosan were stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 4 week and 2$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 week to test the effect of extenting shelf-life of Paeksulgis by chitosan. The pH of Paeksulkis was 5.65 without chitosan and pH of those were about 7.0(6.94-7.01) with 0.05-0.5% level of chitosan. Moisture content of Paekrukis wish or without chitosan was 38-40%. In Hunter’s color values of Paeksulkis of control, the lightness (L) was 84.28, redness(a) was -1.56 and yellowness(b) was 7.68. The lightness (L), redness(a) and yellowness(b) of Paeksulkis were increased by the increasing concentration of chitosan. In mechanical characteristics, cohesiveness concentration of Paeksulkis were the highest in control while obtained the highest score in color, after swallowing and overall quality (p<0.05). The score of flavor and consistency of Paeksulkis with different levels of chitosan wre not significant while the score of moisture in Paeksulkis with 0.05-0.5% level of chitosan was significantly higher than control (p<0.05). The score of flavor and consistency of Paeksulkis with different levels of chitosan were not significant while the score of moisture in Paeksulkis with 0.05-0.5% level of chitosan was significantly higher than control (p<0.05). Total bacterial counts (TBC) of Paeksulgis immediately before storage were 4.2$\times$10$^2$CFU/g in control and those containing 0.3-0.5% of chitosan were 0.5-1.0 log cycle lower than control. TBC of Paelsulgis containing chitosan was lower than increased for 2 weeks, reached at 1.8$\times$10$^{5}$ CFU/g and decreased for 2 weeks, reached at 1.8$\times$10$^4$CFU/g during storage at 5$^{\circ}C$. TBC of Paeksulkis with more than 0.3% of chitosan were 1.9 log cycles lower than that of control during storage at 5$^{\circ}C$. TBC of Paeksulkis with more than 0.3% of chitosan were 1.9 log cycles lower than that of control during storage at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks. TBC of Paeksulgis increased to 10$^{8}$ CFU/g in control and 10$^{6}$-10$^{7}$ CFU/g in more than 0.3% chitosan during storage at 20$^{\circ}C$ for 1 week. The shelf-life of Paeksulkis was increased with increasing concentration of chitosan both temperature at 5$^{\circ}C$ and 20$^{\circ}C$.

  • PURPOSE. Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns provide the best treatment option for teeth that have a large or defective restoration. More than 20% of teeth with PFM crowns or bridges require non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT). This may be due to the effect of restorative procedures and the possible leakage of bacteria and or their by-products, which leads to the demise of the tooth pulp. Thus, this study was planned to compare the ability of the restorative materials to seal perforated PFM specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study evaluates the ability of amalgam, composite or compomer restorative materials to close perforated PFM specimen's in-vitro. Ninety PFM specimens were constructed using Ni-Cr alloys and feldspathic porcelain, and then they were divided into 3 groups: amalgam (A), composite + Exite adhesive bond (B) and compomer + Syntac adhesive bond (C). All the PFM samples were embedded in an acrylic block to provide complete sealing of the hole from the bottom side. After the aging period, each group was further divided into 3 equal subgroups according to the thermocycling period (one week for 70 cycles, one month for 300 cycles and three months for 900 cycles). Each subgroup was put into containers containing dye (Pelikan INK), one maintained at $5^{\circ}C$ and the other at $55^{\circ}C$, each cycle for 30 sec time. The data obtained was analyzed by SPSS, 2006 using one way ANOVA test and student t-test and significant difference level at (P<.01). RESULTS. The depth of dye penetration was measured at the interfaces of PFM and filling materials using Co-ordinate Vernier Microscope. The lowest levels of the dye penetration for the three groups, as well as subgroups were during the first week. The values of dye leakage had significantly increased by time intervals in subgroups A and C. CONCLUSION. It was seen that amalgam showed higher leakage than composite while compomer showed the lowest level of leakage.

  • We investigated the effects of short-term food restriction and repeated fasting and refeeding on appetite regulating hormones and adiponectin activity in rats. To investigate the acute and chronic effects of food restriction in vivo, Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a control group (CON), a 1 day fasting group, a 2 days fasting gruop, a 3 days fasting gruop, a fasting and refeeding for 1 week gruoup and a fasting and refeeding for 2 weeks group. Blood glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol decreased in all fasting groups compared to those in the CON group. Free fatty acid of all fasting groups was higher than those in the CON, and were lowest in the three cycle fasting and refeeding group. Blood insulin following short-term food restriction was lower than that in the CON. blood ghrelin increased significantly (p < 0.01) following the short-term food restriction, However, blood ghrelin in the repeated fasting and refeeding groups decreased significantly decreased (p < 0.01) compared to that in the CON and short-term food restriction group. In contrast, blood leptin decreased significantly (p < 0.01) in the short term food restriction group and the three cycle of fasting and refeeding group but increased in the six cycle of fasting and refeeding group. No significant differences in adiponectin contents were observed in the short-term food restriction group. But, adiponectin increased significantly (p < 0.01) following the fasting and refeeding cycles. Blood adiponectin and blood leptin levels were showed positively correlated ($r^2$ = 0.469) when all samples were analysed together.

  • Combined pregnancy occasionally occurs when intrauterine pregnancy is complicated with ectopic pregnancy. The incidence of combined pregnancy is normally rare, but the incidence increases when assisted reproductive technology was conducted for infertility treatment. We had a case of intrauterine pregnancy complicated with tubal pregnancy after IVF-ET cycle was conducted. The tubal pregnancy was removed via pelviscopy, which led to the delivery of healthy offspring at the $39^{th}$ week of pregnancy without additional complication.

  • A study was conducted to investigate cryoprotectant effect of commercially produced oligosaccharides (IMO: isomalto-oligosaccharides, FO: fructo-oligosaccharides and GO: galacto-oligosaccharides) on beef protein and to compare their effectiveness to sucrose or a mixture of sucrose and sorbitol on freezing. The optimal addition level of cryoprotectants was determined by measuring $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase activity of sample treated with different concentration (0 to 12%) after freeze-thaw cycle. Since the stabilization effect was not dramatically increased above 8% sugar concentrations, the 8% was determined as an usage level. During frozen storage (at -18$^{\circ}C$ for 12 week), commercially produced oligosaccharides showed lower cryoprotection ability than sucrose but higher than sucrose+sorbitol as measured by protein solubilities and $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase activities.

  • Carbohydrate and soluble protein reserves and regrowth characteristics in response to cutting height were investigated over four regrowth cycles of turf-type perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne L. cv. preludeII). When the plants were at the full-vegetative stage (twelve weeks-old), three sequential defoliations at 3, 6 and 9 cm above the root base were imposed at 2-week intervals. Shoot dry weight in all three treatments continuously decreased with progressing regrowth cycle and the decreasing rate was higher as cutting height was lowered. TNC (total non-structural carbohydrate) in stubble at the end of the fourth regrowth cycle in 3, 6 and 9 cm cutting height decreased by 98%, 82% and 27%, respectively, comparing the initial content. TNC in roots also largely decreased with similar pattern in response to cutting height, whereas the absolute amount was much less compared to stubble. Soluble protein in stubble in 3, 6 and 9 cm cutting height decreased by 98%, 82% and 57%, respectively, at the end of fourth regrowth. A significant correlations between TNC (r=0.906) or protein (r=0.879) at the fourth defoliation and dry weight of regrowing shoots at the end of fourth regrowth were observed. these results indicated that cutting height closely influences the levels of organic reserves available for new growth, and that the levels of reserves might provide a useful tool as a determinant for regrowth dynamics.

  • This study used adult wistar-based rats to observe the sexual cycle as a morphological characteristic of vaginal epithelial cells by vaginal smearing, and investigated the fetal number through mating with male rats of the same strain. The target animal was a 12 to 13-week-old Wistar-based mature unlighted rat (weight 220 g to 240 g), room temperature 23 ± 2℃, 14 hours artificial lighting (05:00 to 19:00 hours), 10 hours Adapted individuals were used for rearing for at least 2 weeks under the conditions of the darkroom (19:00 to 05:00). The feed was managed for free feeding of pellet feed for animals and water. The vaginal smearing method was used for the experiments by observing the sexual cycle every morning and confirming that the normal sexual cycle of 4 or 5 days was repeated at least 2 cycles or more. As a result, the proestrus was found to have few red blood cells, the cells and nuclei were rather large and round, and many nucleated cells were identified. In the case of the estrus, the cells were large and the nuclei were not stained, and most of the keratinocytes were found. In addition, in the metestrus and diestrus, there were many white blood cells, and it was confirmed that nucleated epithelial cells and keratinocytes were significantly reduced. The pregnancy period was 21 ± 1.8 days, and the number of live births per delivery was 11.9 on average. The number of fetuses on the 8th and 10th days of pregnancy were 15.2 ± 0.4 and 15.4 ± 0.3, respectively. On the contrary, the number of fetuses on the 12th day of pregnancy was 12.9 ± 0.6, which was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased compared to the 10th day of pregnancy, and the number of fetuses was similar until delivery. As a result of investigating the change of body weight according to the birth weight and growth stage after delivery, the birth weight of female and male was 9.2 ± 2.0 g and 9.8 ± 2.5 g, respectively. After that, until the 16th day, the female and the male showed similarly moderate weight gain, and then showed a rapid weight gain until the 21st day of lactation. With reference to the results of this study, it is expected to be used as basic data for determining the mating time of rodents and controlling pregnancy and fetal number.

  • The pharmacological therapies and whole body vibration as non-pharmacological therapies were known to have adverse side effects. Therefore, partial stimulation was suggested and its effects were evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the site-specific effects of partial stimulator for treatment of osteoporosis induced by estrogen deficiency. Sixteen virginal Sprague-Dawley rats (12 weeks old) were divided into 2 groups(no stimulation, stimulation groups). All rats were ovariectomised to induce osteoporosis. After 3 weeks of operation, the right tibiae in rats of stimulation group (frequency: 10Hz, cycle: 1500, strain on bone surface: $2000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$) were stimulated perpendicularly at right tibia by using partial stimulator for 6 weeks (3days/week). The right tibiae in rats were scanned, before stimulation (0 week) and at 6 weeks after stimulation by using in-vivo micro computed tomography. For investigation of changes in morphological characteristics, structural parameters were measured and calculated. At 6 weeks the morphological characteristics (relative value) in stimulation group were significantly enhanced than those in no stimulation group (p<0.05). In this study, we find that after 6 weeks of partial stimulation, the morphological characteristics of tibia trabecular bone were enhanced. Thus, we concluded that partial stimulation could be used to treat osteoporosis.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effect of taping therapy on metacarpophalangeal (MCP) disorders of the thumb. Methods: Twenty eight patients were enrolled in this study. They were randomly assigned to experimental (n=16) or a control group (n=12). The experimental and control groups received Ultrasound (Gymna Pulson 200) operating at a frequency of 3MHz and an intensity of $1.0W/cm^2$ with a 100% duty cycle for 10 minutes. The experimental group received, additionally, taping using Kinesiotape on the injured thumb. The following parameters were measured:pain during rest and flexion of the thumb, tenderness, range of motion (ROM), pinch and spherical grip power pre- and post-treatment. This study was carried out 3 days per week throughout the 2-week treatment. Results: There were significant improvements in pain during rest and flexion of the thumb, tenderness, ROM, pinch and spherical grip power between pre- and post-treatment times in both groups (p<0.05). However, there was a significant difference in all parameters between the experimental and control groups (p<0.05). Finally, the satisfaction level after intervention was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Taping is effective for treating pain and dysfunction in patients with thumb disorders.
